>Carl Wilson famously compared Smiley Smile and Smile to "a bunt instead of a grand slam".

So I'd say listen to Smile Sessions. It's amazing. More spacious and epic. Unless you liked the lo-fi aspect on Smiley. In that case I wouldn't know what to recommend.

Here are the Beach Boys classics you should listen to anyway
>All Summer Long
>Pet Sounds
>Smile (Sessions or good bootlegs/fanmade shit)
>Sunflower
>Surf's Up
>>
The obvious top 3 is
1. Pet Sounds
2. Surf's Up
3. Smile Sessions
>>
Definitely Smile Sessions if you liked Smiley Smile. It'll give it a new, fuller experience.

Or you can put it off for a little bit. You might find it more rewarding if you listen to Smiley Smile a little more, then some of their other albums, then return to SMiLE to have a semi-nostalgic feeling, but in a new light.

It's not the best, but it is an underrated album imo

ahead of its time since these guys were making synthpop before it even existed

Beach Boys have 1 maybe 2 good albums. The rest is just fans overhyping.

Way to blatantly ignore everything before Pet Sounds but still include shit like Carl and the Passions.
>>
>>63564891
There are some good songs pre-Pet Sounds, but the albums as a whole were shit, the band wasn't even trying to make "albums", they were just collections of singles and cover songs.

Carl and the Passions is good m8

Nah mate. May be weaker than some post-Pet Sounds stuff, but they're just as good as stuff like Sunflower, Wild Honey and Friends.

Severely underrated album.
Mona and Love is a Woman might be two of my favourite Beach Boys songs.
>>
>>63564936
All Summer Long is fantastic and a hell of a lot more cohesive than some of their later albums.

Y'all wrong sucka. Carl and the Passions is indeed incredibly underrated and one of my favorite post Pet Sounds albums, but acting like Today isn't a cohesive collection of songs is so ducking wrong. Listen to side B and tell me those songs don't flow beautifully. (With the exception of the last track...) All Summer Long is also plenty cohesive, albeit less so than Today. SD(&SN!!) isn't so exceptional as a collection of songs but its peaks are undeniably fantastic and it's still worth listening to.

Pre Pet Sounds Beach Boys takes some getting used to (except for Today, I dunno how someone could like PS but not Today), but trust me, it's rewarding. The only pre Pet Sounds albums I don't regularly listen to in full are Surfin' Safari and Little Deuce Coupe. Those aren't very good as albums.

I should have put version numbers on these. I always forget which one this is.

Also turning this into a rare Brian thread.

brian wilson is my favorite musician and composer ever and i love many beach boys albums im supposed to not care about, like half of miu album
but this thread is fucking cringey

just listen to everything from 1964-71 in the order of which cover looks the nicest (skip 20/20 that album is full of junk)
listen to Love You or Adult/Child whenever you think you're ready

>>63561590
dont bother with fan mixes they're only for aspies

>>63565165
awful chart

>>63565467

>>63563105

synthpop had been formulating for at least a couple years prior to this album

>"I'm a bigger fan than you because I own the SMiLE box set and probably like more albums than you, probably"
>being spoonfed the SMiLE sessions and not having every volume of the Unsurpassed Masters bootlegs instead
>being proud of liking even one second of MIU

Nobody asked for a pissing contest but the least you could do is put forward a decent effort, c'mon.
>>
So......
To reiterate..........

The Smile Sessions
Brian Wilson presents Smile
Wild Honey
Friends
20/20
Sunflower
Surf's Up
Holland

and for anything before Pet Sounds, I would recommend Summer Days and Summer Nights.

But that's just my recommendations. I could be wrong about all of this.

>dont bother with fan mixes they're only for aspies

How do you think people listened to this album before BWPS, or the Smile Sessions? And how can you earnestly believe that BWPS's fucked to shit tracklist is the only true way to listen to SMiLE? This has to be bait.
>>
>>63561568
nah son, get real

pet sounds
smiley smile
smile sessions
>>
If you like Smiley Smile go check out Wild Honey and Friends NOW.
>>
>>63561568
No. Just no.

1. Pet Sounds
2. Smile Sessions
<power gap>
3. Surf's Up, Sunflower, Today!, etc.

They have plenty of great albums but Pet Sounds and Smile are just on another level.
