I personally believe the internet's obsession with labelling things is what contributed to the negative stigma around both of those albums amongst music enthusiasts.
I also would like to state that only Sunbather is entry level. Liturgy's stuff is way too polarizing to be entry level.
Long story short, image means a lot to people who form their personality around music, and these two bands conflict a lot with the black metal image.

What "triggers" me (though ultimately i don't care that much it's more "annoys me" but i've still written this huge post so...) is how people talk of it.
The promotion of both bands often imply that they are a new peak for black metal and a huge leap forward in a non-innovative genre.
People saying that have obviously never dwelved into the genre enough to see that black metal is an innovative genre and that these albums aren't that special though having their own style.

I find it funny when certain metal purists still get their panties in a bunch over that Liturgy album specifically. Their heads are so far up their own asses that they won't even acknowledge that the music is actually good, regardless of what you call it. I mean, sure the incessant tremolo picking can draw on after a while, and some of the purely vocal passages are kinda lame. But some very entrenched metal fanboys act like this is their antichrist.
