Townsend was one of the first players to bring that aggressive, almost proto-punk style of guitar playing into popularity. He was nothing flashy but the guitar parts work wonderfully with the rhythm section, just doing what they need to, it takes at least some skill to be able to do that.

The best guitarists are always going to be some jazz/classical guys, and lists of the best rock guitarists are always the most popular and "cool" ones with Hendrix at a guaranteed #1.
You can't really distill instrumental skill down to a number and rank them like that, "best X" lists are always totally subjective.

Breakdown of why I think this
>Ramones
In my opinion, Ramones is one of the greatest achievements in the history of pop and rock music. Everybody knows the story that the Ramones killed the excesses of prog rock with their fast, edgy rock and roll, but the reality and subtlety of their music is more complex than that.
The Ramones on their debut are the Ramones in their purest form. They strip away all the musical and lyrical excess of modern rock, leaving it naked. They're stupid, but ironically so. It's a great artistic achievement because it is the ultimate exercise in deconstruction. Feelings aren't expressed, they're shouted and beaten into your head. There's no musical variety. "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" is almost embarrassingly straightforward and honest. So Ramones is truly the only rock and roll album you *need* to hear, because everything common to all rock is here. It simultaneously celebrates and satirizes rock in the most pleasurable and purely fun way it can..

>>
>>66404644
Yep, should be in at least good tier because of the riffwriting.
>>
>>66405315

Vai is so goddamn technical, though. 90% of his songs are just guitarwank as he shows off how fast he can play. For the Love of God is the only song of his I can think of that shows any real emotion.

Petrucci is really good, but only within his genre.

Derek Trucks and Duane Allman should really be somewhere in the list, though.
>>
>>66405611
>cherrypicking
Just goes he's technical doesn't negate the fact that he's easily top 5 currently alive. Petrucci is the same. And I think Gilbert is actually faster than both of them.
>>
>>66405611
>he's never heard tender surrender
For the love of god pales in comparison.
>>
>>66405530

Colma, Electric Tears, and Population Override are the only albums I can think of that are that way. Everything else, from Crime Slunk Scene to Enter the Chicken to The Elephant Man's Alarm Clock are all just him hitting the same solos at the same speeds with little real variation. Once you catch that one little riff that falls into every one of his solos you'll never unhear it.

That said, Population Override is probably my favorite BH album.
>>
>>66405668
If you like population override, check out thanatopsis, same guys just a different name. He did a companion album to electric years and a bunch of his recent releases are mellow. Look into a real diamond in the rough and shadows in the sky.
>>
>>66403693
Fred Durst in good tier
>>
>>66405646

I mean, if you measure guitarists' worth by their technical ability, then sure Steve Vai is probably Top 10. I'm just not that interested in speed-oriented guitarists.

Jimi Hendrix and Robert Fripp are the only rock guitarists that truly matter. The rest either regurgitate blues tropes that Blues guitarists do better, aren't as technically interesting as classical/jazz guys, are metal (Tony Iommi), or are non-rock (Glenn Branca, maybe John Fahey.)
>>

Fucking awful.
>>
>>66406141
>jimmy "plagiarize to heaven" page

>>66406141
I'd say Tom Verlaine (of Television) truly matters, his style was extremely innovative and bluesless.

>>66406199
Example plz
>>
>>66403693
John Frusciante for pretty good tier
Mark Knopfler for elder god tier
>>
>>66406141

Jimi Hendrix built his entire goddamn career on blues tropes, you facile dunce. And besides, Frank Zappa blew him out of the water in every regard. The man introduced Hendrix to the wah pedal, for God's sake.
>>
>>66406210
Page is a more obvious example, but guys like Richards didn't really do anything new either. One can make a slight argument for how Pete did something different by compromising his melodies to match the bass/drums in his band, but Hendrix already did similar stuff.

>>66406217
His style literally has blues tropes in it though. But his overall presentation and style was important for post-punk/hardcore and alternative rock so yeah maybe I can see a good case for him. Albums like Spiderland and OK Computer certainly wouldn't exist without him.
>>
>>66406130
>>
>>66403693

>>
51 posters and no one has mentioned Ace Frehley.

I can't be dissapoint at /mu/ for having shit taste, but damn!
>>
>>66406332
Hendrix made blues more riff centric which sets up basically all of the 70s/80s Rock bands and modern bands trying to rip those guys off. Jimi's usage of effects and feedback was big for noisier stuff and why many industrial guys say he was a big influence. Jimi, unlike Zappa, was actually good at doing jazzy stuff so his jams were more intricate, too so Jimi excels on a virtuosic level, too. Combining some of these aspects had Jimi create new sounds/approaches to music like extending bends on an electric guitar, playing chords in a start stop fashion that inspired funk, etc.

This is just the surface of how much of an influence he has. Other hard rock guys who were blues influenced don't even compare.
>>
Frusciante deserves pretty good
>>
>>66406404
People here like to think Television's hard rock rather than post-punk probably because they sound like no other band from that period. That makes it harder for them to see what they were really doing.

*sigh, everyone thinks Zappa's some genius on a guitar because they listened to Hot Rats or something, when its pretty obvious for anyone who knows their shit that Zappa's jazzy jams were pretty weak. Even Lester Bangs mentions this in his Hot Rats review for example. Very overrated.

>>66406952
Doesn't mean he doesn't have jazzy stuff in his music. Jimi didn't know shit about theory or anything like that and he figured a hell of a lot out. Dude's the basis for jazz fusion.

That link is only proving my point. Zappa is hella overrated on the instrument mastery point. What makes him great was the weirder more out there stuff you hear on Freak Out or Uncle Meat.
>>
>>66407100
>Zappa's jazzy jams were pretty weak
zappa was never a jazz player. his preferred method of playing was over a one or two chord vamp where he could play a full solo with its own self-consistent rhythmic and melodic themes which he would later extract and do with what he wanted, often renaming them and considering them as full compositions in their own right.

>>
>>66407220
So...again that shit's pretty fucking basic. Jimi was doing far more complex leads over the rest of the music with far more changes.

Okay I'll spell it out for you. Shit like this that's about muh notes and speed is not that impressive. Technicality doesn't equate to greatness.

Not to mention that the black page isn't even that impressive on guitars; it's always the drum parts that were impressive and only technically, too.

See, this thing needs to stop. Everyone thinks Zappa is on a whole new level, and while in certain ways he is, in other ways he's far from it. His prowess on a guitar is one of those things that's far from genius. Not to mention that I wasn't the one that started making the comparison.

>>
>>66407566
I was thinking more along the lines of varieties of techniques put together to make an instrument feel like it's a living thing but...sure. Not to mention that The Black Page is literally called that because Zappa was trying to fit so many notes in the sheet, the sheet music has more black than white on it. Literally the definition of muh notes and muh technicality.
