American Idiot was the first album with swearing my mum allowed me to listen to, so it was a real big boy moment for me. I remember hearing the repeated references across the songs and trying to piece together what they meant (I wasn't familiar with the idea of a concept album).

As always, Nirvana are an extremely controversial band. imo many many bands outdo them in terms of performance and lyrics but they were the ones writing catchy angst songs
