I initially had the same thought, I eventually got sucked in through the amazing atmospheric instruments such as the saw, the perfect melodies, Mangum's voice, and overall catchy melodic tunes. Don't worry though, on /mu/ most albums talked about are generally liked by most but we are people with our own preferences, like I could never get into the loveless album for example.

The lyrics and singing are what sell the album. Mangum sounds very authentic and emotional in it. If you can latch onto his emotion or whatever, then it's an amazing album.

NMH had a following before this album was released, so what you're saying doesn't actually make sense. That said ITAOTS is a great album with lyrics that I find incredibly poignant with a vocal delivery instrumentation that matches them perfectly. It has a great dynamic range as an album, and the flow of the thing is wonderful. It sounds extremely energetic, there's very little music I've heard that communicates energy so effectively as this one does, especially in rock music. It's not just like a bunch of untalented guys got together, were emotional, banged shit and screamed a lot, anyone could do that, and it really wouldn't be enjoyable to listen to, but this album is both an ridiculously fun listen and incredibly personal. It's also very unique in the lyricism, timbre of Mangum's voice, and the instrumentation obviously. People often try to pass off the wide range of instruments as some kind of stupid gimmick but really I don't see where they're coming from. We live in a world with hundreds and hundreds of instruments, and some are better suited for certain roles than others. I think NMH did a great job of choosing the "correct" parts that each instrument played, for instance the bagpipes on the untitled track are so energetic and shrill, and choosing that instrument made that song so much better than if it had just been played somehow with conventional instruments. I could go on but I'm busy.

I've been going through school all my life being bored out of my brains getting at least 95% on all my tests, and all the incorrect answers were silly mistakes, because I'm just too smart for school. I can't wait for everyone else to learn something that I already knew within the first day or two of being taught it. I'm getting my GCSEs done in 1/4 of the time everyone else has to do it in, I'm also doing more than double the average amount of GCSEs that usually would be done.
