Nah Surfer Rosa is the ultimate Pixies album. It perfectly represents their sound without exaggerating it into a inconsistent mess like Doolittle.

Well, Doolittle is definitely more inconsistent. That said, neither album really grips me. Surfer Rosa only really has like 2 or 3 songs that do much for me while Doolittle has like 5.

You could see it even on /mu/ over the years. People here are FAR kinder to 808's now than they used to be, I was one of maybe 3 posters that didn't have it at the very bottom of their rankings.

A respectable opinion - I don't think it's terribly different from what they were doing before but TKOL's polyrhythms and loops do make it sound a bit more krautrock-y than anything else they've done. I'm sad you feel the way you do about Seperator but hey, something's gotta be the worst track.

Only Tomorrow, arguably. The album as a whole is too thematically inconsistent. It has a flow and it generally deconstructs Loveless if you really think about it, but as an album I'd say Loveless is still the more satisfying listen overall.
Seriously though, Only Tomorrow is damn near the perfect MBV song.
