He wrote the best songs of his career with them. Maybe they could have given him more opportunity to arrange and use his songs in what was the most creative period of his life. I wouldn't say they were stifling him though as, like the others, he was never as good afterwards. At their best, the four of them had a rapport few rock bands have ever had and they both inspired each other and contributed to make each other's compositions shine.
