Currently watching the John Waters black comedy film Female Trouble (one of the films mentioned by Grimes here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfpwB7gzbwQ) and all I can say is... wow.

Also - am highly suspicious that the lyrics to Circumambient contain oblique references to it's theme song:

She has stated in the past that virtually everything in her art/music is an abstruse reference to something else. Studying/analyzing her stuff is like going on an endless easter egg hunt.
>>
The only complete video recording (that I know of) of a live performance of Heartbeats:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQNT_JcpRko

The sound quality is shit, but you can hear her singing/ad libbing going from the F# below middle C all the way up to the G# above high C. That's more than 4 full octaves of vocal range - in a single song/performance.

You don't get what's the deal with Grimes' music taste. Her taste ranges from uncool (Mariah Carey, Bieber, Lana Del Rey) to cool (Autechre, Madlib, Cocteau Twins, Hildegard of Bingen). Unlike you, she's not ashamed of her uncool favorite artists. You have to respect that.

>>You imply that she's better than those who divide music like some things are plebeian, and some others are patrician.
>Yes. She's much better than them.

>"...for me it’s not a contradiction to consume both high culture and Harry Potter or some Japanese mangas. Pop art still appeals to me the most. I guess it has to do with the way I grew up in the 2000s. I like to see a film like Kill Bill as much as I do like watching Solaris. Both experiences are potentially inspiring. Or take dancing: lots of people say that dancing is just a waste of time, but to me it marks a key difference between animals and human beings. It takes a high level of intelligence to interpret music, especially as something you can dance to. It’s spiritual. It’s liberating. If someone can make you dance to their music, it’s a pretty amazing skill. Same goes for all the pop art that touches you emotionally in a split second. I can’t see anything negative in that. I sometimes get the impression that people mistrust their feelings. I try not to do that, just like I try and trust simple ideas and things that are stripped down to the bare essentials. I think it’s a sign of having mastered something.
>Are you referring to your own music?
>'Actually, I would say it’s true of the last Katy Perry record. There are so many people who call her songs easy and so cheap, but to use elements of pop that so many people have used before and still make such an amazing record—that’s awesome. I mean, her songwriting is really on parade, as is the production. A million people are trying to make pop songs all the time, and you’ll listen to all sorts of failed attempts on the radio every day. To succeed in a medium that everyone is working in is a huge achievement, if you ask me. It takes a lot of intelligence and talent for sure.'

The 'patrician' vs 'plebian' divide is for morons.
>>
>>66281659
Go to one and find out for yourself - there are no shortcuts in life.
>>
>>66282011
All the best patricians publicly sanction submissive plebhood for extra attention, it's inoffensive and re-inspires the audiences following spirit at the expense of their independent creative spirit. If you think the one in the interviews is grimes behind the mask you haven't even understood Inception.
>>
>>66281417
I go through phases where I absolutely love her, then the next week, I absolutely hate her, it's not the coolest thing ever but it's really inspiring... emotional wise
>>
>>66282379
Translation: truly 'patrician' music lovers understand and value the worth of 'plebeian' music, thereby making themselves identifiable as both 'patrician' and plebeian' at the same time and rendering the distinction between the two to irrelevance.
>>
>>66282471
>then the next week, I absolutely hate her
why
>>
>>66282593
It just so happens that every artist does their utmost to standout creatively but is content with mainstream offerings... right.

The translation is that they want to be the sole wielders of the power of distinction, they are mostly afraid to mention that different tiers exists in case their audience uses it against them. Ambiguity sells.
>>
>>66282684
Disdain has just gotten to be such an under-appreciated emotion you know, like it's natural and we have it, so impulsive wise I have to experience it and learn from it. You have to crush your idol to surpass them.

Her instrumental and production skills are shitty. Literally just uncreative loops drenched in reverb or LFOs running at a really slow interval or an unchanging distortion plugin. Not nearly as good or interesting as Grimes' early or late work.

Her voice is pretty good and Grimes-ish, but she sings in literally the exact same style on every song I heard.

Grimes interviews are 100% unfiltered Claire talking. She's admitted to as much - to her own chagrin - on numerous occasions (and it's a very easy thing to pick up on if you start reading through more than a couple of them at a time.)
It clearly sucks for her (since it puts the Pitchfork-esque media crowd in a position to 'filter' her words for her) but its great for the rest of us since it affords a direct connection into the inner mental workings of her mind - something that you almost never get to see with someone at her professional level of skill/competency in her art form.

I mean rewatch and reread her interviews and sort of entertain the idea that she's a self-absorbed asshole. You kind of start to see that there might be some truth to it.

Also, she's mentioned before that until her career as Grimes started, she didn't really have a relationship with her parents. Considering how she talks about her childhood, she was likely alienated at a young age and raised herself introspectively. People who do that tend to develop multiple personality disorders, a very common one being narcissism.

It's plausible, is all I'm saying. I wouldn't put too much salt in it until she has a public breakdown and declares herself better than everybody, though.

That song's not bad. I'm listening to the album now, and it's a bit better than my initial impression, but I still prefer Halfaxa by a lot. The atmosphere and aesthetic and the sound of the vocals is all good in Fallal, but compositionally it's amateur tier.

In summary, I think Halfaxa has better beats, but Fallal probably has better vocals. Grimes is just really good at coming up with interesting rhythms, and I don't think this other person has mastered that. And Grimes has improved her vocal and production abilities by a lot lately so she's better on pretty much every front (even if you don't like the pop vibe to Art Angels, which is understandable; though it's an excellent pop-dance record and should be appreciated as such).

we followed the trail, broke into some accounts, discovered a large conspiracy against claire. all masterminded by her object of abuse, who is going to turn the tables of submission and abuse when she least expects it.
>>
>>66283842
One potential explanation is that she took some drugs, maybe amphetamine, before the interview so she'd be less anxious about it. And obviously, amphetamine can make you feel and sound really cocky and arrogant. She's definitely abused drugs many times in the past.

Could be her real personality though. IDK.

I kind of understand and agree with her sentiment. Considering her friends were mostly just amateurs fucking around, she definitely had a much better intuitive grasp on music than they did and probably knew she could eventually surpass them by miles. But that is a pretentious thing to actually say aloud even if it's true, especially in an interview with a stranger.

A lot of great musicians feel tons of arrogance about their work, and that mindset probably actually helps improve the work. Still not something that should be vocalized in that way, but it's not that unusual.

>>66284049
Sleep deprivation can greatly improve mood and creativity, but it makes you more vulnerable to illness and reduces your attention span, working memory, concentration, and overall cognition. It's not good to be sleep deprived regularly.

>>66284104

You were right that I am an amateur producer myself (though no Soundcloud currently). Grimes is one of my inspirations and one of the main reasons I decided to become a producer. I've actually been studying her (and a few others') music kind of religiously. I have text files with hundreds of lines of notes of some of her production and compositional techniques.

>I mean rewatch and reread her interviews and sort of entertain the idea that she's a self-absorbed asshole.

Oh, she's clearly had her ups and downs (imagine the stress of suddenly having to endure 12+ hour press junkets consisting of answering the same basic set of questions asked by primarily stuck-up sounding music journalists - aka what this disappointed interviewers' account was most likely a product of.)

But she is clearly aware/willing to own up to not always having been the pleasantest of people - especially during her early years. Take for example:

>So I have to tell you, we actually go way back. I'm from Vancouver as well, and my mom tutored you in math.
>'Oh my God. Are you serious? What was her name? Short, dark hair.'
>Yep, Val.
>'Yes! Oh, does she hate me?'
>No, not at all! She actually read an article about you that came out a while ago and e-mailed me to tell me. She said it actually made a lot of sense that you ended up pursuing something creative.
>'And got kicked out of math.'
>No, what happened? Did you pass?
>'I passed! I got 92 percent on the final.'
>That's amazing.
>'Tell her. Tell her I aced the final! You should tell her I actually lied and got into the McGill physics program and I didn't have calculus or anything, and I got a B-minus, which is very impressive.'
>How often do you use math now?
>'All the time. I work with sound waves all day; it's not math math, but still.'

http://www.vulture.com/2013/05/grimes-on-math-memes-and-breathing-problems.html

Again - she censors NOTHING in her interviews - it's really refreshing desu.
>>
>>66284555
Yeah, I don't expect to ever make any money off of music making. I still have a separate full-time job and plan to keep that. Less than 1% of amateur musicians ever get to a point where they can make it their full-time job.

My only goal is to eventually get some fans who like my work. That's all.

If you're deadset on making money off of it, you're better of trying to get jobs doing stuff for companies/other people, like sound design or professional mixing.

But you're probably better off just getting an unrelated job, making stuff in your spare time, and making it as good as possible so people like it. If it ever becomes good enough for a lot of people to like, it'll naturally become a career.

idgaf how prestigious the award is. in fact, the higher the honor, the better. i'm a very irreverant person, the bigger the award, the more chance she'd see it and that's the only reason i'd accept it was to give that shitty speech.

>>
>>66285013
In terms of like switching between different parts of a drum kit or using drums to make polyrhythms, yeah they're a bit generic. It's not like Autechre or anything. But I really like the rhythms she comes up. That's part of what inspires me.

I agree Art Angels has the most interesting drums, but going back to her early work, ≈Ω≈Ω≈Ω≈Ω≈Ω≈Ω≈Ω≈Ω≈ has a very intense drive to it that I like. Favriel has a catchy drum loop throughout it.

But I guess when I said drum programming I meant more like rhythm programming or overall rhythmic structure. Even when she's just got a simple 4 on the floor kick, she layers a lot of elements around it at different intervals or syncopations that create a catchy rhythm. I think she's really creative with working around the grid in Ableton.

There's a video interview where she said she'd just be in school if thing hadn't worked out.

I could always tell she held something back the way she says this. I thought it mean't she'd be proper dead though, not being a drug addict.
>>
>>66285433
Art Angels is most different from other albums, those song you named would be complete trash without drums
>>
>>66285460
I think most people are turned off of Halfaxa because of the weird vocals. And honestly, I agree her singing isn't great in some of the tracks. But the instrumentals more than make up for it, and the reverb on the vocals helps a lot.

It's been said a lot on /mu/ before, but I'd really like to see her do another Halfaxa-like album now that her singing chops have improved. I'm convinced she could make something even the most Grimes-hating /mu/tants would like. I don't know if that's where her interests lie right now, though.

>>66285501
They would be yes, but she's said in recent interviews she often does the kick and drums before anything else in tracks. Since she most likely built those 2 tracks around the drums, it's obvious they'd suck without them.

>>
>>66273902
where do i start if i wanna get into grimes?
>>
>>66285304
Yeah - Grimes own descriptions of her compositional technique is that it's rooted in a maximalist approach to embellishment of what are, initially, just simplistic drum beats. She starts with a percussive pattern/tempo that appeals to her, and then just goes on iteratively adding layers of sonic texture and detail (drum sound variations, instrument tracks, endless layers of vocals, etc) on top of it until the sonic 'holes' between beats seem filled in. It's a very well-thought-out, effective approach, imo.
