It's superior to literature in that it can circumvent educational shortcomings and language barriers to hit you right in the heart, whereas lit is more dependent on your understanding of the content.

We're talking generally here.

Of course to the untrained ear, the opposite would be said of atonality, dissonance, and noise.

Literature>Visual arts>Music>Film>TV Shows=Video games

I choose to put Literature first as it can not only convey almost everything from the other art forms, but it can also be easily altered in one's mind, perfecting something for an individual which the author might have not even realised.

Visual arts I've put second as they can evoke as much thought as a film, book or a whole album in seconds or minutes, altough not always or not as wide of a topic, but things like Duchamp's Fountain always make me feel interested and amazed.
For the example I choose the Fountain on purpose, as first when I've heard of it, I was very vocal about it being garbage, waste of anyones time and of course "How can that be considered art!?" After two weeks when I've almost forgot about it, I've realised that the whole movement of Ready Made was to shock and or enrage, and it has accomplished that fantastically.

Music I've put third, because again, if it's supposed to convey scenery, story, and so on, one can alter it to his likings, making the experience even better.

Film is on the fourth place as technically it always comes from a form of literature, but not always it expresses the same concept, feelings or point.

TV Shows I've put fifth as they're made to be only for the consumption itself and lack any kind of after-thought, but again that probably doesn't apply to every show and I might be wrong here. I believe that there is no TV show that couldn't have it's content made into one film, or maybe a trilogy, instead of eight+ episodes or multiple seasons. The more episodes people watch, the more dosh, milking one idea for more than it's worth.

cont. even thought nobody probably cares.

I'm not even sure why you put Video Games in these ratings though, they might be good and fun, but they're not art. I would say there is a few exceptions though, when people bring up this discussion, I like to talk about Silent Hill 2. The game has fantastic atmosphere, has the feeling of survival horror enhanced by providing the player with bad controls - a fantastic break of the fourth wall, nice story and multiple branches of it covering different characters, very unsettling design and a fantastic soundtrack. Overall a great experience combining all of the previously mentioned, so in some sense it is art. There isn't many similar games though, so considering the whole genre art is completely out of the question.

What kind of shit films do you watch? Cinema is far more stimulating than music, and simply by its nature is able to approach a much broader scope of ideas, from the abstract to the concrete, in relation to music. also it's funny you point to classical when trying to make a case for something better than film, when jazz is clearly the superior musical form.

The beauty of film is that it is still in its infancy, yet it is already reaching levels of experimentation, ambition, and influence rivaling those of music.

No classical work could rival masterpieces like Mirror, Andrei Rublev, La Jetee, Taxi Driver, The Passion of Joan of Arc, The Master, 2001: A Space Odyssey, etc.. Just compare the volumes of scholarly works regarding music and cinema, cinema offers a far more expansive range of tools, themes, and ideas to express compared to music. I quite enjoy and study both, but cinema is indubitably the superior art form.

The comparison wasn't arbitrary though, there are very concrete parallels between Kid A and Taxi Driver. Both are widely held in high esteem by critics of both art forms. Both are ambitious in scope, and utilize advanced techniques in their execution (though Taxi Driver employs a far more sophisticated range)

The link between Spiderland and Perks of Being a Wallflower is more tenuous, as one is highly regarded while the other is not, and the themes in Spiderland take a decidedly far darker and nihilistic turn as opposed to those explored in the markedly unambitious Perks of Being a Wallflower. Spiderland also utilizes advanced musical elements, whereas Perks uses fairly straightforward and basic filmmaking techniques.

I don't get why you guys keep putting film so low.
Film is the most complete of all arts.
It contains imagery and in some cases, if it's animated, it has painting/drawing, it has acting, it has a story(literature, even if you don't read it, it's basically read to you), most have a soundtrack(music that will go with the action in the movie). In one art, it has various arts in it. The only problem is that while Film is the most complete, it's also the hardest to do well. Sure anyone with some experience, and money can do a Michael Bay, but only true talented people with vision and passion can make a Kubrick.
Music comes second, and fuck the rest.

>Implying there isn't a HUGE difference between active and passive listening

Passive listening is what people who listen to Top 40 radio and use music exclusively as background noise (most people) do.

Active listening is what people with trained ears/musicians/people who listen to music as a hobby do and I argue it is just as intensive mentally if not more than reading comprehension.

In short, your statement literally could not have been more incorrect and ill-informed.

objective truth
>>
Borges: "...Generalizing from the preceding case, we could infer that all forms have their virtue in themselves and not in any conjectural “content.” This would concord with the thesis of Benedetto Croce; already Pater in 1877 had affirmed that all arts aspire to the state of music, which is pure form. Music, states of happiness, mythology, faces belabored by time, certain twilights and certain places try to tell us something, or have said something we should not have missed, or are about to say something; this imminence of a revelation which does not occur is, perhaps, the aesthetic phenomenon."

music and literature are what I take most seriously, I think precisely because the visual element is not provided to you. the slogan is "humans are visual creatures"; maybe the imagination or some deeper faculty is forced to be more involved. in a movie, you see a particular man with particular features in a particular place, doing particular things, and there's something disappointing or trivial about it (though I have seen a couple that feel "universal", or especially complete, and that I can watch many times). In a book, things are less explicit, and often it could be any man. In music, it's even less clear what exactly "is happening", and that's what I like. It's abstract (but also physical and immediate).

interestingly, characterizing music as "pure form" (I'm not totally sure what that means, but I like it), allows a comparison with mathematics, which is also concerned with form as an end unto itself (eg. the idea of a group, not any particular examples of content like rotational symmetries or modular arithmetic)
