Some are good. A high percentage aren't. It feels very formulaic to me nowadays.

Most trap rap is very similar.

All the beat dance style songs also sound very similar, having often identical structures, similar vocals and similar very organic sounding I think future house inspired drops.

While these songs are good, they are oversaturated

>It feels very formulaic to me nowadays.

The vast majority of music in all genres is very formulaic dude, it always has been. The truth is that all music sounds the same to people who aren't into it and listening to a lot of it, because fundamentally most music is way more similar than it is different. Like if I showed a "pleb" some music by Autechre and Nicolas Jaar they probably wouldn't be able to tell much of a difference. That's not because there's a huge difference between these artists that doesn't exist between Fetty Wap and Future, it's because I enjoy that music and listen to it so I notice all the differences that exist.

>>
>>66258278
My identitiy has nothing to do with what music I enjoy. Not do I think myself better than other people. Nor do I think my taste is better than others.

Popular music is made for profit. Its an excercise in marketing. I'm just not sure why I would waste my time listening to music by untrained plebs, for untrained plebs when there's 500+ years of fully trained musical geniuses that I could listen to.

Its purely about the quality of the music. Nothing else matters. Popular music is low quality, so I dont waste my time on it.

eh people who write popular music dont have masters degrees in composition. Trust me its low quality, you probably just dont know any better. Bach fugues are high quality. Webern miniatures are high quality. Strauss and Schubert songs are high quality. Pretty much all classical / art music is quality, or it gets forgotten. Only the prime stuff survives, so its really a wealth of great music. I just dont understand why people waste their time on catchy tunes made for profit?

>WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH TOP 40 THE GUIDE
I heard that 2 songs go join usual radio station rotation per week.
assuming 3 songs per album at average go to rotation and after some amount of math I will not post here because almost no one cares, you have 4000 mainstream albums since 1900

Now, imagine there is a bookstore with 6000000+ different books inside it.
Now imagine some 4000 random books from this store.
If you enter this store, will you check those books? Probably not, the ratio is 1499 books to 1.
Are those books special compared to all others? Probably not, also remember its a ratio of 1 random book to 1499 non random ones.
Imagine someone giving 1 random book to you and telling you to find something you like there, and then giving you 1499 telling you to find something good on this list, you will obviously find something good on the second case.

Now in this analogy, the 4000 books are mainstream music
The rest is underground music.

The amount of mainstream music is too limited, its so limited that is irrelevant, as some example if you spend alot of time talking about music and discovering it, you will still not discover some genres, like noise black metal, tonefield, dark jazz, doomcore, free funk or whatever and this is not a problem because you cant know every single thing ever and those genres you dont know are just few in world of many.

Not saying you cant listen to mainstream music, in the same way I am NOT saying to you to not care about dark jazz, tonefield, or doomcore, just saying they dont need special treatment

Its the best way to get a well rounded education.

you're not gonna learn dick about music unless you can analyse at least a bach chorale.

Trust me, all pop music is based on chord progressions. Bach's progressions are god tier and he's from 300 years ago. There's so much to learn, and a university/college education gives you the opportunity to learn it. As well as work with live performers which is vital if you want to actually do it yourself.

>>66259427
If you learn about it, you will understand. Until then you got nothing to base your opinion on beyond "theory sounds scary and I dont think its necessary, but I dont really know"
>>
Music theory is like grammar, it's basically rules that people figured out retroactively. Like, when people were first figuring out how to communicate, they didn't sit down and iron out a bunch of rules, they just did it. That's why theory and grammar have so many weird exceptions and broken rules...it's not exactly science. If your autism requires a rigid set of rules that cannot be broken, look into math, just don't read any Godel or Cantor.

If you dont know much about a given subject, you think you know everything. When in fact you're just ignorant. Once you start learning you realize how little you know.
>>
>>66259767
lol you're a fucking moron

I know theory very well, I know a lot about musical construction, I understand exactly why Bach is a god for composing fugues with as many voices as he did, but I also understand that music theory does not and cannot say anything about the quality of a composition. It's about function, not aesthetics

By all means keep displaying your retardation though
>>
>>66259794
No one follows the rules rigidly (unless they want to write a strict fugue or write a piece in an authentic renaissance style). But knowledge helps you succeed in a given art form. its more than just harmony and counterpoint. "Form" allows you to extend a short idea into an entire large scale piece, with a tightness of construction that an untrained person could never dream of attaining. "orchestration" allows you to know the possibilities and limitations of almost every instrument. Very important if you want to write for other people, or for orchestra or jazz band. Learning composition also allows you to think more self critically. To see where your pieces are succeeding and where they're failing. Being able to communicate in written score with performers opens up a whole world of possibilities, and means you can learn from the masters of the last 500+ years through score study.

A music education is something no one serious about music would turn down.
>>
>>66259899
Theory helps you create quality pieces. Not much more to say. Feel free to continue insulting me though, if it makes you feel better.
>>
>>66259931
None of this changes the fact that adherence to theory or lack thereof has exactly nothing to do with the quality of the music in question

Musicians who know and employ everything about theory can and do release shit music (anything you've written is almost certainly proof positive) while musicians who know nothing of theory can and do release good music. Music theory has literally nothing to do with the quality of a piece in exactly the same way that an engineer's designs for a skyscraper have literally nothing to do with the aesthetic qualities of the building that an architect comes up with

Bach did not have progressions, he was a master of counterpoint. Anything resembling tonal harmony was a byproduct of the rules of counterpoint.

Pop music DOES draw from the rules of functional harmony a lot but that was first written about in 1722. Bach was still around for 28 years after but he was stuck on counterpoint.

>TLDR If anyone uses "Bach" and "Chord progression" in the same sentence, they are wrong

Well I'm a college student so I have heard all these at parties dozens of times. I also work in a CD store which plays this stuff over the speakers. I've heard the majority of songs on here multiple times. With that in mind...

>>66252305
I disagree. A lot of the stuff here is literally made with a formula. Intro > verse > chorus > build & drop > chorus >Outro.

There's not a lot of variety in a drop; most drops on the top 100 are just a phat synth that increases in volume and/or pitch, followed by a wonky-style beat section. And whatever individuality the artist has, it's usually wiped clean in production. So much of this pop is polished to a shine that the vocals and drum patterns blend together.

Now, I don't want it to seem like I hate the stuff. I would never really listen to Panda at home in my free time, or anything by Future. There's not a lot of substance. But at a party when I'm drunk I appreciate the drop because it is always easy to predict no matter how fucked my reflexes are, and the breakdown that always follows is intentionally off kilter enough to catch my drunk footwork.

It's formulaic as shit and it's not really of much artistic value, but... some of it is like ok if ur fucked up.
