The year is now half over. Have you spent it wisely?
Listen to your library, show off your backlog, babble about new music, tell us what you have been listening to today and what you will listen to in the following month, laugh profusely at Jangle's Thrift Tourney, regret life decisions, and just let the good times role.

>Led Zeppelin - II
Robert Plant's kind of a bad vocalist, Jimmy Page is overrated as a guitarist courtesy of baby boomer dads and their wannabe baby boomer sons, and John Bonham should never attempt a drum solo ever again. With that out of the way: this isn't that bad of a rock album, just not that good of a rock album either. Obviously I like “Whole Lotta Love” (mostly because of that guitar going “nyoom”, that's kinda fun), and it's followed by two decent songs. Everything afterwards, bar the fun “Heartbreaker”, isn't worth mentioning though. It's all samey middle-of-the-road blues rock that drones on for a bit, a big step down from the variety of the tracks on their debut. Like Let It Bleed, this one seems to be a classic rock album that sells itself on the merit of a track or two, while the rest is only satisfactory for those who are really into this style of dadrock. Count me out, though. 2.0
>Brian Eno - Another Green World
Somewhat of a crossroad, still showing Eno's art pop side while blending it with a lot of short ambient tracks. Individually, all these tracks are hardly worth mentioning, but they come together as a whole pretty nicely to create a relaxing experience. It is painfully obvious, however, that Brian Eno just wasn't made to be a pop singer, and on the songs with vocals you just kinda wish he wasn't there (bar maybe on the opener, where the effects on his vocals make them a lot more tolerable, and the fact that it's a song that wouldn't do bad on a Bowie album helps as well). The album's at its best during its more explorative moments, like when Eno dives into proto-industrial on "In Dark Trees", or when he creates a beautifully layered ambient synth track such as "The Big Ship". As a whole, the album feels more like a playground for Brian Eno, a place where he experiments with his instruments, tries his hands on a few genres, and sees what sticks and what doesn't. It also happens to be a pretty good listening experience. 3.0
>>66129723
nope, that the rec?
>>66129741
>Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
Ah well, it's Sabbath, so it's obviously good, but I do feel like this album, as opposed to Paranoid and their s/t, lacks a true killer track. At least upon first listen, I couldn't find anything genre-defining like "Black Sabbath" (the track where they basically invented doom metal) or """epic""" like "War Pigs". It's all fine enough, of course, but without real standouts, I find it hard to jusitfy listening to Master of Reality instead of another Sabbath album. I do have to admit that "Orchid" was a pleasant surprise, it's a really neat acoustic interlude, but you know, it's just a short interlude track. The longer tracks, while all decent, never do something that justify listening to Master of Reality instead of the Sabbath albums that preceded it. 2.5+
>Neil Young - Harvest
Neil Young remains a songwriter that has the potential to be liked by me, weren't it for his voice. I just can't get over it. It did work better on After the Gold Rush, and on this album there's a track or two, like the famous "Old Man", where I find it pretty fitting, but most of the time I'm just not a big fan. The songwriting's fine you know, and had someone else sung it, I'd find it at least decent, but Neil Young's sorta whiny tenor doesn't do it for me. In addition to that, this is definitely the weakest album of his I've listened to thus far, and this is mostly due to the two fucking symphonic Disney ballads he decided to throw in for good measure. Yeah, hey, overly dramatic, gratuitous string section plus sappy songwriting plus Neil Young's unappealing voice, fucking perfect. "Are You Ready for the Country" is a bit of a clunker too, and "Words", while alright, can't really justify its length in the end and has a very boring guitar solo to boot. The singles on here are fine, the rest is not really worth wasting my breath on. 1.5

Just watched "The presence" and it's without a doubt the wkrat horror film I've ever seen. It can only be explained by a director and screenwriter who have absolutely no idea whatsoever what would make a film scary, and just thought "hey people think nightcam and jumpscares are terrifying, right?" Well no, absolutely not. There's no buildup to anything to really set you on edge, and the jumpscares (or more often, fakeouts) become predictable within a few minutes of the film (yes, there are enough jumpscares in just the first few minutes for that, which should tell you something). Even my gf didn't jump at even the most intense jumpscares, and she's a real scaredycat.
But a huge shoutout to the ghost who operates the camera like a boss and zooms in on important things to the """"plot"""" when the camera has been "abandoned".

Excuse the poor """reviewing""" skills on this one.
Aisha Ali - Tunisian Dances
Very good record. I can't explain very well what I like about this so just bare with me. Of course, I liked the Tunisian flavor that comes with the album. This is possibly just because the Tunisian culture is foreign to me but whatever, I enjoyed it and found it interesting. The instruments, melodies, rhythms, basically every aspect of this sounds quite different from what I normally listen to and it sounds good so I like it. Terrible """review""" I know but I'm bad at analyzing this stuff.
Samulnori - Record of Changes
Woah. To start things off, I've gotta say, amazing percussion (nice drums) here. You'd think they get repetitive but the rhythms are so pleasant, complex and powerful that they just keep you engaged. There's also quite a bit going on with them so I guess that adds to why they're so captivating. I wish I knew better how to describe the percussion here but all I can say for now is that it's top notch. The vocals here were very strong too. While I don't like them as much as I like the percussion, I still think the vocals were great stuff and certainly emotive. Absolutely loved this album. "Nice drums"core is way too good.

Rating and reviewing will begin on Tuesday when I return to work. I'll be playing Overwatch all weekend.
Wayne Shorter - Juju (1st impressions)
Awww! He's trying sooo hard to be John Coltrane!
Unfortunately these compositions are lacking in emotion and depth. None of the solos are particularly captivating, and while I consider Shorter a personal favourite, he's the weakest musician on this record despite being front-and-center. It sounds like shorter on autopilot, just playing a few pretty notes for a nice dinner party.
t's funny because by this time, Coltrane had moved into avantgarde territory, and Shorter is still trying to be 1960 Coltrane.
Recommended for fans of Shorter, or 'thanksgiving' jazz.

Guilty Connector - Beats, Noise And Life.
Well, this is a solid noise album. I am familiar with similar stuff like Government Alpha and etc (although have not heard GC before), so this record was really up my alley. Nothing spectacular, but quite decent and well-made. The only thing I didn't quite appreciate is how the track is somewhat light in the beginning and then suddenly turns harsh. I'd like it more if it would be getting harsh gradually (also either harsh all the way or light all the way would be better).
Anyway, solid 7 for this album (if anything, on my scale 7 is p good).
Sun City Girls - Dante's Disneyland Inferno
I don't like having preceded expectations about smth, because usually everything turns out to be kind of different. Not this thing though. Until I actually heard it I was sure GC is going to win, but this is something actually grand. I won't even bother analyzing it, seems like a lot of people know this record. It actually impressed me a lot and I had lotsa fun over these lyrics. Liked Uncle Jim's voice too. Definitely a 9

i don't have the bonus tracks! also i have to leave in an hour or so, plz spare me
>>66132120
Well, technically just barely. But I guess we can assume you are already selecting for better-than-average albums when you pick what to listen to and rate, so you're statistical average is probably "good".
"Middling score" wouldn't be too inappropriate, though.

anon figured it out, WILDCARD HA!
Pere Ubu - Dub Housing
Better than A Modern Dance in my humble opinion (which is now not worth shit)
everything aspect of this from the songwriting to the dance-ability to the instrumentation to the vocals are better, come at me
Jackson C Frank - Jackson C Frank
very nice, very comfortable, kinda catch collection of folk tunes, surprised at just how clear the production is here
The melodies are nice, lending this sadness that wouldn't otherwise be present here
Guitar playing is elevated above something like Bob Dylan's earlier stuff, did appreciate the picking technique on tracks like Yellow Walls and My Name is Carnival

contrarian fucklord
I love that album but you still have to die
Oh man this is so fucking good

Fushitsusha - Live 1 (1st impressions)
Wew, yelly japan guy is pretty cool.
The songs dragged occasionally but that's perfectly acceptable for a live album to do, no no deductions there.
Some really interesting textures and varying vocal styles make this a pleasant listen.
Probably the most interesting and updated take on psychedelia i've heard since LRD.
Recording quality here is pretty good but still has a very echoey 'large room' feel.
Recommended to fans of LRD, Mercury Rev, and noise rock / psychedelic rock in general.

King Crimson - Red
I don't think that I've come across a prog album that conveys this much emotion this effectively
The guitar courtesy of Robert Fripp really is something else, and much to my surprise, it's surprisingly understated in the mix... Notes are chosen very carefully and in a utilitarian fashion, so as to lend it's power to the rest of the instrumentation, not the other way around... sure the guitar is allowed to show it's teeth at times (like the final track) but the album is so much better because of the fact that the guitar is so understated for the most part
The drumming is really good, knitting together these wildly different time signatures without ever seeming wanky or overstated
Bass guitar has this crunch to it due in part to the prominence in the mix, it's great
wasn't really a fan of the first track, but those other 4, whooo boy
Fear of Music and Halycon Digest next, then I'm off to bed

eyyy sounds like Fripp to me.
King Crimson's like the band that got me into music. Starless is pretty much fo sho one of the best prog tracks ever recorded, certainly Crimson at their best.
