why don't you marry it, you gay
Please no bully

This. I was in 7th grade. nu metal was the big thing. I'm listening to this instead.
This got me into listening to full albums, and inspired me to play the guitar
when I was 8 or 9 my older brother made me a mixtape with black sabbath, the strokes, the hives, the ramones, and ac/dc
I easily had the best music in my grade and all my friends would ask to listen to it
>>66103742
literally hole's WORST album
>>66103742
no album, but my best friend showed my Blackbird by the Beatles on a field trip when I was like 6 or 7 and I was hooked, I was fucking obsessed with The Beatles until I was like 13
This + a lot of other skate videos.
My dad owns a bike shop, and i used to hang out there a lot as a kid. When they first opened they were hiring a lot of young people...BMXers etc. They gave me a lot of cool music. Notably Exit Planet Dust but The Chemical Brothers. That was a big eye opener for me.
>>66103742
not even a joke
First album that I listed to in completion, couldn't put it down for almost a year and it got me into a bunch of punk stuff (Descendents, Bad Brains, etc.). From there I really started diving into music
>>66104772

c) and they suck as a band in general

First album I listened to all the way through.

I didn't even know what post rock was when I first heard it, a girl I know called it "school shooter music".

My 14-year old ears couldn't comprehend what I was hearing, but as soon as I heard Paranoid Android, I was in love
I was twelve. Misty Mountain Hop was my jam.

pop punk needs a comeback
>>66103742
Sparked? Probably something like disturbed (euck), but this set up a bonfire fire. I've still kept on the prowl for an album that can give me anything close to the same experience I had listening to this for the first time. The atmosphere, the Hypnotic quality it has, the fact that I love every single song on here, the psuedo-story going on between this and Part IV... I just love it. I kinda wish I could go back to the time when I first heard this, where I could listen to an album many times without losing interest and I actually bought CD's with my parent's money.
Quebec by Ween took me back there, and listening to it actually convinced me to leave her for a while and delete my Last.FM as my music taste had become practically a fashion statement where I cared more about how people thought of me than how I actually felt about the music.
>>66110491
actually such a great record
This or Toxicity
>>66110563
pop punk didn't need to come in the first place
>>66111310
Those first 2 albums are so great that it's a genuine tragedy that anything they made after that was shite outside of a handful of songs.
>>66103742
don't judge
Know every single lyric for this album too. Prob listened to it 100+ times
>>66111341
Perhaps its just nostalgia goggles, or an appreciation for Daron Malakian (inspired me to pick up guitar) and the other members of the band, but I really don't mind any of their discography.
That said, I don't think anything ever came close to the first album, I love how it throws in polka and salsa and all sorts of weird insane shit.
Listening to some of their really old demos is pretty fun, they were a lot more unhinged back then
>>66105252
THPS1 had the best soundtrack
>>66111380
(You)
Taught me how an album can have a connecting theme, motifs. Now those are the things I look for most in an album for any genre.
Honestly it was probably In Utero, too. I heard All Apologies on the radio when I was like eight, and just got super into Nirvana, eventually read Journals and saw his lists of his favorite albums in there, went through those and found a lot of stuff that I liked a lot
>>66111680
You managed to listen to SWANS before /mu/?
>>66106141
this right here
>>66111699
Yeah, and all the other underground '80s stuff, Butthole Surfers, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, other No Wave, etc etc which branched off into '90s lo-fi stuff, lots of Pavement, Sebadoh, Guided by Voices. All when I was probably 13-14 in rural Minnesota.
Probably this.
>>66111744
Samefag, i'm not bragging, though. It actually kind of sucked to be one of two people who listened to this kind of stuff. I had nobody to talk to about it, except one other friend who just liked everything I showed him.
Made me want to learn bass guitar, still playing ten years later
F#A# changed me
I loved this album when I first heard it, still love it.
>>66111829
Watch Stalker by Andrei Tarkovsky. It's 2 and a half hours long, in russian and subtitled, but it changed me.
It's the kind of movie that takes its time, and wants you to think about what it's showing you. Everyone seems to pull something different out of it.
i still luv him

>>66114746

I remember sitting around all day listening to my local rock station waiting and waiting for "Would?" By Alice in chains to come on every single day, I'd wait and wait because I was waiting for the guy to one day say who the artist was. When he finally said it was AIC I went a bought an Essentials of them and listened to those two discs until they literally wouldn't play anymore.

Guns and roses's debut, i still cringe to this day

This is what lead me to neutral milk hotel, jeff mangum, and it kinda all branched off from there.
The worst part is I found them on Yo! Gabba! Gabba!
Too lazy for picture but it was At Fillmore East by the Allman Brothers for me. Whipping Post is still my favorite song.
>>66114039
Listen to it while walking alone in the city at night. Made for that type of feel/environment.

You know what fuck you /mu/ this album is amazing and I don't care what you say.
Also this was the first time listened to a full album and also the first time I cried during music.
I was 9 when my saxophone teacher gave me a tape with this album on it.
But loved music from when I was a little child like most, of course.
This shit got me to learn guitar. It also steered me towards John Frusciante's solo work after I heard the rest of RHCP's albums
First album I ever got when I was 9.
The first album that I listened too in its entirety. My little 10 year-old mind was blown away.

>>66125952
You know it! Love the guy. Birthday 21 is my jam.
When I was a child I loved The Proclaimers - Sunshine on Leith and wanted it played all the time.
The first band I became obsessive with was Hanson (the album with MMMBop) when I was 9, but the only thing I think I cared about was that the drummer was only 2 years older than me.
When my actual taste in music started to form, the album that kicked things off for me was blink-182 - Enema of the State, when I was 11.
The album that actually got me listening to good music was Richard Hell & The Voidoids - Blank Generation, when I was 15 or 16. My parents also had a box set of The Who that I really loved around then too.
>>66106141
Yup, exactly. Along with this.
>>66126120

this as well, you can shit on nirvana as much as you want but it introduced a lot of people to great music
before this, all i listened to was dadrock. then, sort of ironically I guess, my dad took me to see beautiful noise, the shoegaze doc at a local film festival, and I was like "god damn this is cool". also around the same time a friend introduced me to /mu/.
Honestly Gorillaz are a great gateway to more obscure gernes of music. Gorillaz lead me to everything that i listen to nowadays.

>>66114039
In it's simplest, it's an album about walking home from the rave in the middle of the night.
It is also simultaneously an album about the death of the rave scene and the UK "walking home" from it
It might not make complete sense unless you have lived in London

One of mom's gay friend who is a fan of The Residents gave me a Sonic Youth DVD with the whole Goo album because I was into Nirvana, and he thought I could like them.
I think that's someway because of him that I ended up lurking this board (and an other friend of her that introduced me to slsk, Melt Banana, but told me that is for "people that stay in their homes and smoke pot instead of partying")
I've seen this album on a few charts, but I'm surprissed it doesn't get more love here
