If videogame music is far inferior to regular music because it was made to compliment what's happening on the screen and in the players hands, then would listening to the music while playing the game make it as valuable as real music?

Or perhaps, instead of album versions of the track, they could release a version that includes ingame sound effects/dialogue/etc. to compliment the track, just as the track complimented it?

Sort of like how

I believe the same should apply to film scores as well--watching the film or the film's dialogue/sound effects playing in the backround of the score.

Also, is this discussion allowed on /mu/? If not, where would it go? /b/, /trash/ and /s4s/ are meme/shitpost/porn boards with no specialization in discussing music/soundtracks/scores.

games and movies scores should not be compared to regular albums because of the reasons you gave

I don't think simply adding sounds from the game changes that. You are still not playing the game.

I don't know, the sound effects actually help with visualizing the situation within the game, and if you've never played it, would allow you to interpret something thematically similar but imaginatively different from the source material.

I think my original argument boiled down to simply comparing entire videogames to music, in which at that point there could be grounds to actually ban scores that weren't made independent of the film/game.

It's not a matter of value but purpose. A video game track was obviously meant to be played alongside the rest of the video game, yielding what one might hope to be a thematically coherent package.

By itself, it's hard to decide whether it's more valuable than any other music album, and you shouldn't think in those terms, otherwise you'll go nuts. Best not compare them, I like to think of OSTs and regular music albums as apples and oranges, to be honest.

On my vidya music list on RYM I make clear that I rate the music in the context of the game, but I still think that there is a huge difference between actually playing and simulating the experience.

Video game/movie orchestral soundtracks are basically the Nickelback of classical music.

Soundtracks are not inferior to regular music, especially not for that reason. It just serves a different purpose than regular albums. That doesn't give it less value.

>instead of album versions of the track, they could release a version that includes ingame sound effects/dialogue/etc. to compliment the track, just as the track complimented it?
That would be terrible and pointless. If you're listening to the track by itself to begin with, when what would be the point of adding in-game sounds? You might as well just play the actual game and listen to the soundtrack through it. I can't even imagine how they would complement each other without the context that you would get from actually playing the game.

You're talking about music, so yes.

it gives it less inherent musical value

I've seen people discuss movie/vidya/animu music here before, there's no problem with discussing it here.

All soundtracks are garbage

There's not a single good soundtrack out there.

lmao I don't agree with his sentiment but there's a whole body of literature on that Cage work versus what would amount to a rudimentary musical analysis of that Morrowind track at best were it to be examined

that is to say there is definitely credence for the former as more *important* considering its eminence in postwar experimental music, and that if you'd want to measure its [artistic]ness versus an elder scrolls track in light of that, it'd be entirely up to your taste

Only soundtrack that ever stood out to me in anime was NGE/EoE. Everything else just had good openings.

Anime is garbage tho

Probably my favorite animu soundtrack of all time senpaichi, shame that the show doesn't really hold up looking back on it though.
