Is Grimes patrician?

>A fairly regular Vancouver kid, with interests like anime, Harry Potter and Mariah Carey, it was during her adolescence that, as Garossino puts it, “something very strange happened.”

>“She changed into some kind of super-brain, exploring the internet all the time.”

>Teenage Boucher’s obsessions ranged from space travel, to the twelfth-century composer Abbess Hildegard von Bingen, to Russian existentialist lit. She crushed so hard on Dostoyevsky that she even flew to St. Petersburg to attend an intensive Russian immersion.

>But as with Grimes’ music, Boucher preferred autodidactism. Garossino recalls hearing Boucher teach one of Chopin’s nocturnes to herself, bar by bar. But only through the wall—at the time, Boucher had too much stage fright to even play the piano in front of her mother.

>“Something that people don't understand about Claire is her searing intellect and focus,” Garossino said. “Whenever you think you've figured her out, she's already three moves ahead. Things are never what they seem.”

>Her mother related how at McGill, the wunderkind wanted to take physics, but couldn’t stand introductory courses. Instead, Boucher entered higher-level classes and studied the prerequisite material at the same time. “She would nearly kill herself studying—surviving on almost no sleep for weeks at a time.”

>“And that's how she makes music today. In long, solitary blasts of blistering intensity.”

She knew about Hildegard way before the latter became popular on /mu/. Grimes > /mu/.
>>
Only trained composers are patrician.

Hate to break it to you. Popular music is never patrician. Only Art Music (look it up if you have a problem with this label - it literally means "classical" music and does not mean that all other music is not art, even if it implies that) written by people who know what they're doing.

I don't even know she was popular on /mu/. For me it was always a codeworld for crazy women that are into mysticism, orientalism, feng shui, karma, kabbalah and shit like that. I first learned about hildegard from similar crazy person in 2000.

Pseud is who pretends to know shit and have expertise. Claire never does it, quite opposite.

She could easily name some patrician musicians as her favorites, influences but she does not do that. Instead she names plebiest and shittiest musicians imaginable and that's her real genius is showing at PR.

If "patrician" in your definition means "intellectual", then you're correct.

Do academic music composers always "know" what they are doing? Many of them use extramusical inspiration (e.g. dreams, numerology, mathematics, poetry, philosophy, divinity, etc.) for their compositions, and many of them create compositions based on "what sounds good" (i.e. they find a nice melody or some nice little bit of counterpoint while improvising, or while listening to the music in their head, etc.). The greatest academic music composers all follow intuition, just like all of the greatest popular music "composers". Sure, the academic composers then take "what sounds good" and develop it "formally", but clearly the intuitive idea is the soul of the composition, not the formalization. When we get to 20th century music, this "not knowing" and extramusical inspiration becomes even more pronounced, as I'm sure you know.

Academic art music has that intuitive poetic inspiration mixed with intellect and to varying degrees, "standards". Popular music is obviously vastly less intellectual, but it is not any less poetic. Formalization does not exist in popular music, and this is its' unique beauty.

Sorry, but Grimes transcends your small-minded 'patrician' 'plebeian' silliness:

>'[...] for me it’s not a contradiction to con- sume both high culture and Harry Potter or some Japanese mangas. Pop art still appeals to me the most. I guess it has to do with the way I grew up in the 2000s. I like to see a film like Kill Bill as much as I do like watching Solaris. Both experiences are potentially inspiring. Or take dancing: lots of people say that dancing is just a waste of time, but to me it marks a key difference between animals and human beings. It takes a high level of intelligence to interpret music, especially as something you can dance to. It’s spiritual. It’s liberating. If someone can make you dance to their music, it’s a pretty amazing skill. Same goes for all the pop art that touches you emotionally in a split second. I can’t see anything negative in that. I sometimes get the impression that people mistrust their feelings. I try not to do that, just like I try and trust simple ideas and things that are stripped down to the bare essentials. I think it’s a sign of having mastered something.'
>Are you referring to your own music?
>'Actually, I would say it’s true of the last Katy Perry record. There are so many people who call her songs easy and so cheap, but to use elements of pop that so many people have used before and still make such an amazing record—that’s awesome. I mean, her songwriting is really on parade, as is the production. A million people are trying to make pop songs all the time, and you’ll listen to all sorts of failed attempts on the radio every day. To succeed in a medium that everyone is working in is a huge achievement, if you ask me. It takes a lot of intelligence and talent for sure.'

Yes. You missed the point: that it's not her entire taste, just a small part of it. Unlike you, Grimes is honest about her music taste; she also likes Aphex Twin, Cocteau Twins, The KLF, Depeche Mode, Smashing Pumpkins, Beyonce, Lana Del Rey, Outkast, Panda Bear, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Tool, kpop, Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails, Drake, Mariah Carey. A real patrician is confident and doesn't give a fuck about other's opinions about their taste.

art is entertainment, fool

that's the whole fucking point behind art.
>>
>>66056420
But music is entertainment. Why do you think people are listening to music, go to festivals and shows? For the sake of the art or for enjoyment? There's nothing wrong with poptimism. Only elitist pricks have a problem with it. They also have a problem other people's taste instead minding their own damn business.
>>
>>66047894
I really don't believe any of this, her music is pretty unextraordinary and she rarely says anything outside of Tumblr orthodoxy. For the most part she's a generic art school girl except kind of talented.
>>
>>66056512
>>66056519
Art is entertaining. It is not entertainment. Its value is not defined solely by its ability to amuse. Entertainment is.

>elitist pricks

The classic poptimist insecurity, the thing that drives this entire idea, shows itself.
>>
>>66056423
>Nonetheless, she acknowledges being in possession of a curious sex appeal, and is circumspect but pragmatic about its use.
>“My femininity is in no way the basis of what I am doing, but I know sex sells, for sure,” she says. “And I definitely have played that card. Sometimes, you’ve got to look in front of you and recognise that there is a way to make things slightly easier, which will lead to a lot faster success.
>“And that doesn’t mean being like, ‘oh, my tits are out’, but it does mean that if someone says do a fashion shoot, you do it, why not? I recognise that that’s not the purest way to look at it, but I just think I am really good, and I want power, and that’s a faster way up the ladder.”

Yes it is. Nobody makes boring art. If your art cannot pique interest it is worthless. It doesn't have to be amusing, it must simply entertain and provoke thought or feeling.

Pretentious art that's about meaning instead of abstraction has sullied modern art. Take your pitiful post-modernist conception of what "art" is and leave here, fool.

I'm amazed how people can be so shameless, even on an anonymous board, to admit that their taste is so inferior that they don't like Grimes.
>>
>>66056730
The definition of entertainment you're using is different from mine. Interest and the provocation of emotion is not the same thing as being entertained.

en·ter·tain·ment
ˌen(t)ərˈtānmənt/
noun
the action of providing or being provided with amusement or enjoyment.
"everyone just sits in front of the TV for entertainment"

Art can entertain, but to be truly beautiful it must also challenge. This is where pop music inevitably fails, because by its very nature it cannot be challenging.
>>
>>66056625
You're actually insecure. You fear poptimism and you fight it with any means necessary. Don't be a fool, embrace it. You could listen to high art music AND pop music (like Grimes did). Why limit yourself to just high art? Pretentiousness?

Woah, just like most artist of popular music.
>>
>>66056874
I do not listen to art music exclusively, I enjoy pop music too. The difference I don't elevate pop music beyond its station. Poptimists often make the assumption that if you don't value pop music like art music, that means that you must be a pretentious faggot that listens exclusively to Stockhausen every day of the week, this is not the case. I'm saying it's not on par, and it isn't.

>inb4 muh aesthetic relativism

>>66056968
"Sad" movies, as you put them, are usually inept attempts at emotional manipulation, in which the audience achieves emotional catharsis through bland characters. Tragic movies, on the other hand, are different. Once again, engaging and entertaining are two very different things.

Nonsense.

Also there is no difference between tragic movies and sad movies. I hate when people try to play semantics as though it makes them any more correct, as though language is dictorial and not procedural. It's not an appeal to authority, it's an attempt to establish some common ground for communication. This is why definitions exist. If I can't say a word to you and have it mean the same thing, then nothing can be established. You've not argued why tragic and sad are the same thing, you simply stated it, something to be expected from a poptimist.

Words are given meaning by solely by the context they are used in, and if you can't derive their meaning in the sentence given you should know to ask questions.

Instead of doing that and thinking yourself above asking questions, you've instead shown your true colors which if I'm being honest I had my suspicions of the moment you used the word "poptimist".

By asking the question I fall into the rhetorical trap that has been set by the poptimist paradigm, it was clear what was meant when you said entertainment, (I'm not sure if you're the same person to be honest because that guy asked what was wrong with poptimism and it would be strange for you to take issue with the term when you called for me to embrace it.) it was a wide term that included all ways in which a piece of art can engage someone, which of course means that pop music and art music are on the same level, and any attempt by me to say otherwise is just "LOL PRENTENTIOUS." It's a rhetorical trap, not an honest attempt at discourse, which is why you've resorted to calling me a pretentious twat over and over again, because you don't have an argument.

>There’s a psychology to success. I was reading all these biographies and watching documentaries about people who are successful. It seemed like the only thread amongst everybody is that unflinching, “Yes, I can do this and I am the best.” It’s a personal rhetoric that you can develop. Like, if you go and tell journalists, “I’m the future of music,” then people start printing that. So I’m just going to tell everyone I’m making the future of music. I never really understood the hype around Grimes. She makes a few catchy pop tracks but there's nothing revolutionary about it once you strip away the visuals. I remember reading reviews about 'Art Angels' when it was first released and they kept going on about her fashion or use of non conventional instruments / glimpses of other genres mixed in but this is all sub par to any fans of Prog. Her interests are average for anyone who spends a lot of time on 4chan and producing/mixing your own records is no longer an amazing feat in 2015. Zomg a girl who can use cubase / logic etc whoopteedoo. I also found her music videos irritating. The subtext attached to the imaginary is really basic and only excites the minds of simple 14 year olds.

I think what you're referring to as independent isn't what I'm talking about. 4AD is a major record label. They have a parent company, Beggars Group, who sign tens of artists to their sub labels. They have the industry connections, outreach, and standing within the music industry of a major, through their parent organization. They have PR firms, booking agencies, and talent orgs that befit their artists. All distribution of their records is done with little involvement in the artist side. "Indie" doesn't mean that you wrote the song yourself; it means you didn't sign to a major and had a major hand in how your records were distributed and how you were booked and represented.

As well, my point was that it's a bit of a stretch to compare Grimes and the KLF considering that their measure of "fearlessness" isn't remotely similar. They need to be similar in the sense that when you compare the two as "fearless", the actions that demonstrate that quality need to be of a similar caliber. Otherwise, being "fearless" doesn't mean the same thing between the two.

Grimes is not fearless in the same way that Cauty and Drummond were. She has done little to disrupt the industry. Maybe she's bit back a bit against her handlers, I don't know. I'd be glad to read how.

But she certainly hasn't done anything to attract the ire of the elite or her rights holders. Not the same fearlessness.

>I'm on her level of intelligence
Really...? I've always found people who claim to be intelligent are usually egotistical morons. It's one of the most big headed and narcissistic things someone can claim. If you're genuinely intelligent people will recognise this, you don't need to enforce it with verbal communication, you will prove it to yourself and others through conversation and actions. Ironically the people who claim intelligence are so blinded by their own belief that they can't see their own errors or downfalls. Then they surround themselves in sheeple friends who nod to their every command.

Anyway if you're serious about becoming a musician find an instrument you like and take some lessons. Invest in yourself and start getting an ear for what genres you like and what inspires you. Copying Grimes isn't going to make you great, you want to make your own music. There's enough software out there for anyone with a computer to record some basic crap but if you can't play an instrument or understand basic music theory you'll be making shit tier garbage. This sort of thing takes years so don't expect to be easy or even be good at it because assuming making music on a 'computa is like pressin sum buttons' is very naive.
