You probably can't tell the difference between a FLAC and mp3 with a new file. And if you're only going to listen to a song a few times and then delete it, like most people, it probably doesn't make any real difference. But the problem with mp3 files is that they're 'lossy', which means they can lose a few bits from their memory each time they're opened or copied. So if you listed to a song a lot, or move it around, like as part of a collection that you move from device to device, it starts to degrade more and more. FLAC is better when you want music to last, basically.
