>>66032897
>van halen
gross
>>66033158
>>66033169
stay mad faggots get taste or go listen to your beatle rip offs
Is this dadrock?
>>66033206
I'm not a fan of ELO or Cheap Trick, but they sound nothing at all like the Beatles. There are lots of bands that rip Beatles off, but these aren't them.
>>66033209
Yeah
i like to work with it
>>66033242
Is anything made before the 80s dadrock?
>>66033220
you are fucking kidding yourself if you dont think that those two artists are beatle rip offs
mr blue sky is literally a lift from the bridge from a day in the life
always liked these guys, talented and managed to avoid most of the pop-rock cliches of their time
>>66033325
You are completely delusional there's no saving you
>>66033288
Outlandous was there best work, everything else was meh
>>66033288
This man knows whats up. Love how the reggae influence has given it a more timeless feel, the same way blues makes the rolling stones sound not as time locked.
>>66033354
thats like the ONE song of theirs that sounds like the beatles desu
>>66033483
dude jeff lynne literally worships the beatles lots of his songs have obvious beatlesque moments
>>66033206
I'd rather listen to a fucking 39th rate Beatles rip-off than Van Halen. If we're going to attack bands on the basis of originality then Van Halen certainly is no shining example.
>>66033525
All those bands influenced each other equally, stupid
Speaking of ELO and The Beatles, is Traveling Wilburys the greatest supergroup line-up ever?
>Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty
>>66033720
Only two of those are good ;)
>>66032817
Mah nigga. Does any Bowie or Black Sabbath count? If so, then The Man Who Sold the World and Master of Reality are top contendors.
>>66033645
van halen (especially on the debut) is one of the most prestigious and influential debuts of all-time in rock history only beaten by boston's s/t
but go on about how elo, a band that ripped off their own song that was a rip off of another song by the beatles is better
>>66033844
wordddd, i fucks with boston
>>66033741
Only one was good.
>>66033844
why do you hate ELO so much, shits good, jeez
>>66033934
I don't I'm just playing devils advocate with you
>>66033844
>Van Halen and Boston are the influential albums of all time
You don't listen to much music, do you?
>>66033976
>in rock history
Yes they are
even more than velvet underground sorry but its true and you know it
>>66033844
I just realized there was no point in me "adding especially on the debut" there that's bugging me now
>be me
>make dad rock thread so we an all share our love for daddies rock
>instead you all fight over MUH BEATLES RIP OFF and act like our actual dads
baka desu famalam
>>66034060
I bet you like oasis
>>66033844
Yeah, prestigious and influential in the cheesey MOR arena-rock category. ELO were pretty much in that category too, mind you but I give them a pass exactly because of that Beatles influence, at least some of their music had pretty melodies. Nome of Van Halen or Boston's music generally excites me at all, that may be subjective but none of these cheesey pop bands are worth getting a superiority complex over anyways.
Clearly underrated in his time.
Now maybe its dad rock by our standards.
>>66034009
They aren't even in the top 20 most influential rock bands.
Also this
>>66033457
How about The Whale?
>>66034147
I dig Dire Straits. Mostly for Sultans of Swing tho
>>66034104
I guess you would consider Tears for Fears and Led Zeppelin to be corny pomp rock too, huh?
>>66034239
It's their only half decent song. It's a pretty great one though. Listening to Making Movies when going through my Dad's collection was soul crushingly shite.
Highly underrated album
>>66034302
>not liking Romeo and Juliet
what the fuck?
god tier
>>66034239
For me, Brothers in arms is a masterpiece.
>>66034119
Thanks David Lee Roth for destroying Alcatrazz, you fag!
I'm more of a dad rocker than my dad
>>66032897
Cheap Trick s/t is the logical conclusion to rock music.
>>66034272
Not necessarily, when they weren't playing generic blues by the book Led Zeppelin wrote some very pretty music (Rain Song, Going to California come to mind) and Tears for Fears were some good pop/new-wave. It's just cock rock with pentatonic soloing and boring riffs that bothers me, generally.
Is Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers mom or dad rock?
>>66034405
>everything is corny stadium cock rock pomp rock arena MOR AOR glam metal hair metal tripe fuck everything
>>66034447
both
>>66034461
Nah, just Boston, Van Halen and their ilk. Oh, and the Eagles too. Something about their music really grinds my gears.
I don't listen to much dad rock other than Led Zeppelin, any recommendations?
>>66034511
>everything is corny stadium cock rock pomp rock arena MOR AOR glam metal hair metal blues by the pages tripe fuck everything
>>66034545
If you like zep, I recommend
>Leafhound - Growers of Mushroom
>Black Cat Bones - Barbed Wire Sandwich
and anything else on this chart you wanna check out
>>66034545
there's a ton of different shit, start anywhere
I recommend Deep Purple - Made in Japan
is there an essential dad rock chart
>>66034611
I've tried so many times to listen to this but I turn it off whenever the stupid drum solos start.
>>66034604
>>66034611
Thanks. I have shitty internet so it's such a hassle to trawl through so much shit to get to the gems. Will look into all of those
>>66034545
Honestly you are better looking at the more mainstream stuff. I will never understand the love of obscure 70s / late 60s heavy psych / hard rock albums like >>66034604 once you've heard one of those you've heard them all. Obviously exaggerating here to persuade you to listen to my list first because there is some really good stuff on there (Leaf Hound, Lucifers Friend)
Try:
Wishbone Ash
Thin Lizzy
Free
Nazareth
Budgie
Bad Company (maybe?)
>>66033457
Show yourself the fuck out.
>>66032789
This album is amazing. Cheap Trick in general are highly underrated.
>>66034394
I agree wholeheartedly.
>>66032789
came here to post this
>>66034324
>Queen
>underrated
I think you mean overrated
>>66035324
Shit opinion. Queen's 70s albums are underrated.
the face when ur 21 and this is dad rock
>>66035213
>>66035239
>>66035264
I just heard it for the first time recently and was blown away. What other Cheap Trick albums are essential?
>>66033288
Mom rock but the pinnacle of it
>>66034448
the spaceships are guitars.
>>66032763
I got this on vinyl from my dad. Fucking love it.
>>66035382
After their S/T, their releases became more and more poppier so you should probably listen to their old demos and Sex, America, Cheap Trick.
>>66033720
>band has 5 guitar players
>>66033209
That shit's grandfather rock
YOU GO BACK, JACK
DO IT AGAIN
Steely Dan's first album is really damn smooth
>>66036853
I've heard people say that's one of the worst album covers but I like it, it's so weird and groovy
>>66034324
>>66035350
I think reddit is more suited for you
>>66036879
Oh it's great
I guess people just don't like the yellow with the beige background. Not even mentioning the hookers in the background. Because of that they used a different cover in Spain under Franco, I think.
Regardless, the album really gets me going. And I like the cover, personally.
>>66036963
I think blowing your face off with a shotgun is more suited for you. Degenerate millenial fuckhead.
>>66032789
am I the only one who thinks this counts a proto-punk?
>>66037992
Not at all. They were Joey Ramone's favorite band. He even covered their song "Way of the World" on one of his solo albums.
>>66038046
Scratch that, he covered I'll Be With You Tonight from Dream Police
Good shit my man
I win.
ELO don't get enough recognition here. Jeff Lynne wrote, sang and produced all his albums and can play all the damn instruments if he wanted to as well.
>>66040007
ELO in general get underrated cause (like in this thread) beatle fans go all autistic. Jeff has said 5048509358 times the beatles influence him, why is that bad? I'd say he made a song better than most beatle songs desu. Not only that, but he seemed to want more from music. I respect his visionary and musical mindsets
also, time is literally 10/10
UNFORTUNATELY, for whatever reason, he hasn't made a good album since, although his latest is decent. He's capable of more, maybe he's just old and lazy.
>>66035382
In Color and At Budokan (the complete concert version)
>no one's posted the boss yet
i am disappoint guys
>>66032763
All dads must have at least listened to this by law.
>>66040071
Yeah, totally agree.
Beatles said if they continued they'd sound like ELO. The quality of his arrangements has been consistent through the 70's and I like all the weird 'experimental' parts he's made too.
I'm hoping he'll work on another album - there's definitely still a mainstream following if the latest tours are anything to go by.
>>66032763
Eldorado is their best album
>>66032897
Lennon seemed to like them so I'd at least call them 1st rate.
Is Nirvana dad rock now?
>>66040537
>>66040578
yes, all the beatles members loved ELO and Jeff. (harrison was in that band with jeff remember?)
Idk why their fans are hostile towards ELO so much lol
>>66040594
Yes. Early Radiohead is dad rock too.
>>66040594
16 year olds from 1991 are 41 years old now.
>>66040622
i don't know, i have to listen to the "classic rock" station at work and they play Nirvana all the time, but never any early Radiohead
the most recent they play is the Sam Roberts band (it's a canadian station)
>>66040145
This is 100% mine too
>>66039147
also this one
>>66040007
>>66040071
He steeped his talent in shit and sold out. Xanadu lost him a lot of good will.
>>66040145
Meh.
Darkness on the Edge of Town is his most honest album. Rest is Americana fluff.
Except for Dancing in the Dark.
>>66032763

>>66040726
Can't take Ted seriously anymore knowing he shit himself to get out of Vietnam. Fucking hypocrite.
This album + The whole Rush discography especially Moving Pictures
>>66040716
But Time is great, baka
>>66040851
Too much synth cheese to be one of their best. The fact that the best songs on the album (The Way Life's Supposed To Be, From The End of The World, Rain Is Falling, Hold On Tight) are the ones with the least amount of synth punctuates that fact.
>>66041327
PLEASE, that's what makes it great. Synth cheesy in 1970-80s was the HEIGHT of hard synth usage.
>>66041398
ELO jumping on synth-pop just doesn't sit well with me. What made them stand out was the 'classical-rock' gimmick in their classic albums (1973 - 1977). As soon as Jeff sold out, they lost a lot of what made them great (solid hooks, the strings, his singing). Time just reminds me what they brought in to ride on a fad (synth drums, synth strings, less interesting singing style). It doesn't help that all synth pop sounds inherently clumsy to me.
Time is still a good synth pop album. But it's still synth pop.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOXEVt32RYc
>>66041603
Synthpops great, shut up.
>>66041651
Name me one synth pop album that tops Eldorado
>>66041684
Time ;`)
>>66041695
Nah. That's like saying 2001-2003 Michael Jordan is better than 1991 - 1998 Michael Jordan.
>>66041778
Literal who. Seriously any kraftwerk album, and time
love it since i found it in my dad's records
I can't wait to be a dad and see what music from today will be considered dad-genre
>desiigner? he's a ripoff of future listen to some REAL dadtrap
>>66035377
Yea my dad listens to Nirvana Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden. Dadrock is more like Grandparock
>>66041904
Good album. Also check out Seventeen Seconds, Pornography, and the Staring at the Sea compilation
>>66043584
pornography is great too
haven't checked out seventeen seconds yet but he has that too
funnily enough when i asked him about them he said he doesn't like anything after Faith because "they got too bloody weird"
>>66033244
Same here, man. Gives everything a nice rhythm.
>tfw my dad doesn't like dadrock
He listens to pre-dadrock like Sonny and Cher and Mamas and Papas. I try to get him into 70's rock and he doesn't like it.
>>66034448
I came here to post this.
