I'm not contesting neither of your points. I just was thinking about the fact that I usually tend to rate an album a 5/5 only and solely when I can recognize it as an album I can't live without and has grown with me. I obviously do not know how much this person has listened to that album and how much his/her love for it has grown in those months, but I honestly doubt that in five, ten or twenty years he/she could still say "that's my album, that's what made me what I am as a listener"

One of the easiest tells for a classical hack is the pronounced presence of Sonorist or other "drone-classical" such as Feldman, Scelsi, Lachenmann, etc. It's good music, but if their 5*'s include a preponderance of these pieces then it indicates a limited comprehension and appreciation of classical music.

ALSO VERY IMPORTANT IS RECORDING CHOICE. Plenty of mainstream recordings are good but plenty of the RYM picks for classical recordings are bad.
>>66024800
Let's talk about it.
>>
>>66024812
t. JackAnderson94
>>
>>66024800
>>66024831
Going off of recording choice, any person who has the Arditti recording of Schoenberg's Quartet is total hack material riding off of Doc Perkins. In general, anything rated by Doc Perkins in their 5*'s is probably also hack material.
>>
>>66024831
I still don't understand your anger against von Karajan. I find his conduction of Beethoven's symphonic works to be one of the most incredible and precise recordings ever produced.
>>
>>66024831
>pronounced presence of Sonorist or other "drone-classical" such as Feldman, Scelsi, Lachenmann
Feldman, Scelsi and Lachenmann are some of the best classical composers and sound artirsts of all time.

>>66024865
I mean, have you heard the Kleibers, Klemperer, Furtwangler, and Toscanini? All these people I think produce recordings which are:
1. better performed
2. better conducted

Karajan's 60's cycle is decent and I have it rated as either 3.5 or 4.0 as a result, but outside of a few choice pieces/composers he's low-tier.
>>
>>66024883
:)
>>
>>66024906
I may agree with you with the Toscanini one, but I found Kleiber's interpretation of thet Fifth to be quite excessive, and that says a lot if it is compared to a bombastic director as von Karajan is. Plus, I don't think anyone has ever expressed so clearly the distinct early romantic intuitions that could be found in his later works better than him. I also think that he can move pretty well when directing stuff composed between 1810-1890, because he has a deep understanding of what was going on with orchestras at the time.
I never heard Klemperer or Futwangler yet, what would you suggest?
>>
>>66024859
What's wrong with Arditti's rendition of Schoenberg's quartets?
>>
>>66024983
>but I found Kleiber's interpretation of thet Fifth to be quite excessive
lolwhat? It's very measured and extremely well paced, what are you talking about? There's a reason it's universally considered the gold standard for the 5th.
>Plus, I don't think anyone has ever expressed so clearly the distinct early romantic intuitions that could be found in his later works better than him.
Romanticism is only one part of the Beethoven equation. Equally important are, as previously mentioned, a great skill for pacing in works that often can be rather formally "ramble-y," a great sense of rhythmic energy, and expressiveness from the soloists. None of which I think Karajan has. Particularly not the rhythmic energy.

Here's Karajan's recording of the 6th which is highly acclaimed on RYM: https://open.spotify.com/track/11YigXaFNjzST4L0HAaFv3

Very smoothed over and focused on beauty, as with all Karajan recordings.

Now, somebody focused more on the energy of Beethoven, Zinman: https://open.spotify.com/track/1GVkDqOmyfAXEnTeXm8WKY

It's a Pastoral symphony, it's shepherd's dance and common pleasure. It's not some high art endeavor in the vein of Mahler.
>>
>>66025007
Arditti excels in the performance of technically difficult music but is quite lackluster in the performance of expressive classical pieces like Schoenberg.
The thing RYM doesn't understand is that Schoenberg was firmly attached to the classical tradition along with Berg.
>>
>>66025063
Is Boulez' Webern the best all around or are there better performances for specific pieces?
>>
>>66025007
One of the very few releases that reassures me that I should go ahead rating music, if for nothing else for the simple reason that the activity of rating music is like dreaming: its real functions are not at all available to awareness, it is ontologically impossible to tell someone (even and principally to self) what was the dream about without lying, and the ‘stars’ you assigned, supposed to graphically indicate your appraisal, will become, in a couple of seconds, unbearable leftovers of a state of mind about which you could be hardly held responsible, so long ago – chronologically and existentially -- you committed those ‘stars’ to the album page through your computer screen, no matter if in minutes or centuries since punched the rate on your keyboard.
Listen to Arnold Schoenberg’s gospel according to the Ardittis.
>>
>>66025091
I have to confess that I haven't heard much Webern outside of the Boulez set (on Sony. Though the DG one is more comprehensive).
The fact that there have been so few Webern recordings since is, I think, a testament to the impassibility of those sets.

i just realized every RYM review that isn't about music could start the way that one review of Click Dunkey found did: "I was thirteen when I first watched (heard) this. Already I'd gone through a whole lot."
they're always on some plain ass indie rock or "sad" music that goes perfectly with their young white dicks looking through rainy windows you spoiled fucks
>>
>>66028005
> filled to the brim with insufferable vocals, out of tune instruments, bad sound quality (as you'd expect), and most importantly the music just isn't very good. You'd have to be from these countries to derive any sort of significance from this music.

tru that

One of the hottest /mu/ posters currently, BTFOs poseurs like boldfailure all the time.
>>
>>66028105
>that "out of tune instruments" review is so goddamn sad. dude literally can't even fathom that there are non-western musical systems and yet finds it in himself to yell at people who like this.

explain
>>
>>66028812
It's 40 minutes of improvisation using unconventional violin sounds.
I can't talk about form or harmony or melody, all I would have to say is "the concept wasn't new, Polly isn't good at improvisation, and half the people who like this are posers."
>>
>>66028836
what makes somebody "good" at improvisation then? producing clean harmonious tones and melodies?
>>
>>66028938
Improvisation isn't just mindless randomness, it's about creating new melody and ideas from nothing. Being a good improviser is being able to create a formal cohesion out of effectively nothing. All Polly does is random scratches.
>>
>>66028938
Yes. See: Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, etc.

Why did you take your trip off? There's no argument to refute, you're clueless.
>it's about creating new melody and ideas from nothing. Being a good improviser is being able to create a formal cohesion out of effectively nothing
You're the kind of person who doesn't understand the difference between ECM shit like Keith Jarret and actual free improv.

>Stop talking about me. You're no better than /mu/tants because you're clearly perpetuating uselnessnesses, pointlessnesses and meaninglessnesses. I'm a thing? cool to know. tell me more.
>I don't even want to be a "high profile RYMer". What does that even mean anyhow? Just because I don't post irrelevant random xd bullshit on a useless forum? I hate /mu/ as well, if anything, the fact that I'm talked about there disgusts me.
>Number of visits to AntiWarhol's RYM page*: 391330 - Am I a high profile RYMer yet? tell me when please.
>As much as I hate /mu/ and 4chan, at least that horrible and disgusting place is better than RYM's forum. RYM's forum has nothing good about it at all and all the users that post there often are nothing but obnoxious. I seriously hope sonemic sucks so I can just stop using this website and focus on my studies instead. I'm tired of being talked about when I say nothing to no one.
>I don't even know who you are and you post almost 30k message posts of nothing but pointless obnoxious bullshit. I just rate stuff and say nothing for the most part. I am a higher profile RYMer than you are and I don't even want to be. My e-penis is bigger than your e-penis. Do you care? I guess you do.
>Well, how am I "thing" and what's the point in talking about me in the first place then? Why care about that then if it's "not interesting"?
>If you have something to say, simply say it to me. I seriously have no idea why so many people talk about me when I literally talk to about 6 people here. It's quite strange and it literally makes no sense to me at all.
>I don't know who you are and I don't want to know who you are. If anything, you're far worse than anyone who frequents 4chan.
>Do you aspire to be a "high profile RYMer"? If so, why? I seriously want to know. Please tell me.
>Anyone who posts frequently on the RYM forums is the part of RYM I don't want to know at all. But please do tell me. I'm oh so interested in what a "high profile RYMer" is and isn't.
