That's pretty much his entire career in a nutshell. His mediocre songs are really good, but every album (during his prime) had at least a few phenomenal tracks. For fuck's sake, Cold Roses, Jacksonville, and 29 were all released in the course of 7 months. It you put just the God tier songs from each on an album, fuck man.

Yeah, I don't know about Sean. With Nickel Creek's stuff, I usually loved the songs that were written by him. And I enjoyed a fair amount from his first two solo albums. They weren't great, but they had some great highlights. But his last album just fell flat for me. I saw Nickel Creek on their reunion tour, and then I saw Sean solo in a really small venue (i.e., a glorified bar), and he just had no energy solo. He's always been moody and aloof live, but he just seemed annoyed to be there, and it really came out in his music.

That blows. If you have an opportunity to see Chris live, even if you have to travel, take it. I'm fortunate enough that I live in a major city where Chris, Sara, and Sean visit on pretty much any tour they do, and an hour away there's a decent college town where they'll often stop and play smaller venues. In the late Nickel Creek days and early Punch Brothers days, I'd see them at least twice a year. Chris is worth seeing live, if for nothing else than the crazy spectacle of his performance.

Here's the thing about Ryan Adams: He has put out a metric fuck ton of music. Most of his stuff falls somewhere on the rock/americana spectrum, but occasionally he'll venture into pure country, and eventually he'll venture into something resembling metal. It's hard to rec his albums to somebody, because you may love one and hate the other. If you like his Grateful Dead covers, you'd probably like Love is Hell or Jacksonville City Nights.
