Times you were handed the aux cord/given control of the music at a social setting, and the results.
>>
>>66007286
Took control of the music at a party because the girl who had control was putting on youtube remixes. She ended up complementing me on my taste, means nothing coming from her but it felt nice
>>
>oh, i use spotify and ive nearly hit my data limit, soz.
>>
Wrote/edited for a literary magazine last year and had control of the speakers for a bit while we were all editing and organizing shit before the release. Played some Death Grips and people HATED it. Then someone played generic indie pop and the editors were cool with it.

Most bands mentioned in this thread are completely reasonable.

>>

yeah is happened to me too
they were good friends of mine tho so I had no issues making fun of them for being children
>>
What's some good music that normies can enjoy?
Although nobody ever handed me the aux cord (Due to the fact i don't need preach about music like a damn autist, and the fact I have no friends).
But if I was ever handed one. I might but some Weezer or Radiohead.
>>
>>66008592
>play classical music at a gathering
haha i love classical music anon u have good taste
Normal people confuse me
>>
>>66007577
>>66008276
I'd rather normies who listen to obnoxious rap than bland, inoffensive middle-of-the-road background music like this.
>>
>>66008822
Don't put on Radiohead. I did that and people said to turn on something more positive and less depressing. Weezer is a good idea. I've put on the poppy DG songs, Kanye, Hamilton, just.....catchy, somewhat upbeat tunes.
>>
>>66008866

Wow, that's not as bad as what usually happens.

>Is this Kanye West?

I listen to a lot of electronic music so I isually just pick the dancier, accessible tracks I'm digging, with one or two well-known artists thrown in for normie credibility. I'm never really looking for anyone to compliment my taste, I just want everyone to have fun while we listen to shit that doesn't make me wanna blow my brains out (AKA anything that isn't Rihanna's song Work).

It is fun when they get into it and seem amazed that good music exists outside the Top 40/p4k/Noisey zone
>>
If they're into dubstep or whatever I'll usually play some Aphex Twin acid. Indie probably just the Strokes or AnCo if I think I can get away with it.

but in reality I'll be drunk/high and play whatever obnoxious hip-hop I've listened to recently or Danny Brown - 30 and butcher rapping along.

This sounds dumb but if you don't wanna fuck up this situation you gotta be ready, which means having a playlist.

My party/accessible list on spotify contains songs that I know people will be able to get into that I also feel good about playing. Artists include The Pixies, Arcade Fire, Toe, Yo La Tengo, Flylo, Duster, Alex G, Jon Hopkins, etc.

It's all about picking the right songs from people you like.
>>
I actually have a playlist just for hanging out with normies, specifically girl normies. It's nostalgic, decent pop music that everybody knows, enjoys, and might even sing along to

pros:
- it's not bad music IMO
- girls are guaranteed to like it. Every girl in the car will enjoy the music on the playlist

cons:
- everybody will think you are gay man in his mid-thirties

some examples

Len - Steal My Sunshine
Estelle - American Boy
Natalie Imbruglia - Torn
Seal - Kiss From a Rose
TLC - No Scrubs
Kelis, Andre 3000 - Millionaire
Timbaland, Keri Hilson - The Way I Are
Vanessa Carlton - A Thousand Miles
Ciara - One, Two Step
Spice Girls - Wannabe

To offset the gay connotations, I suggest switching back and forth between this playlist and a more aggressive hip hop playlist with tracks like

The Diplomats - Beautiful Noise
The Pharcyde - I'm That Type of Nigga
Fat Joe, R. Kelly - We Thuggin'
50 Cent, Justin Timberlake - Ayo Technology
Wake Flocka Flame - Rooster in My Rari (TNGHT Remix)
whatever the most recent Drake song is
Clipse, Birdman - What Happened To That Boy
Cam'Ron - Dip-Set Forever
Cam'Ron, Kanye West - Down And Out

Nice trips boss. Good story too.

The times when I'd play music in the car never really go far. Except one time which is:
>in car with brother
>play AnCo's MPP
>In The Flowers does that sick drop
>Bro says "Woah anon, good choice, reminds me of Sheep, Dog, Wolf"

He seemed to like it but wasn't interested in My Girls I think? We got to the middle of Also Frightened.
Honestly, I hate when you play music for people in the car and they turn it down to talk over it. This happens with everyone.

I don't have any friends but I would play stuff like Denzel Curry, Desiigner, Kanye, Kendrick, ミドリ, Migos, YG, etc.
>>
>>66011087
I mean the way everyone acts. No one ever asks what are the other ppl in the mood for before playing anything and the way people think the music they like is the only objectively good music out there.
>>
I just play Stereolab, Mac Demarco, Beatles, Janelle Monae, Tame Impala

shit that I kind of enjoy that it's unoffending enough

Nickelback - Photograph

You think I'm kidding but I'm not, this is the secret weapon of any competent smartphone DJ. Everybody will immediately groan and laugh because you're not supposed to like Nickelback, but secretly most people enjoy this song because it reminds them of when they were younger. They will recognize it right from the opening line. If you play it off right, people will think it's funny and consider you to be a guy with an open-minded attitude toward music. If you play it off wrong though...

It's interesting how some people just can't handle shit. It's not even really that fucking... wall-of-sound-y?

It's just like... wow, maybe 5 or 6 instruments? Which isn't a lot at all. Depends on how you define instruments. I'd say more like 7. But it's fucking beautiful regardless.

P.s. I love that like, spring reverb'd clicking at 1:49.

Played straight outta Compton, we all sang it perfectly without missing a beat

I solved this problem with this:
I made a pandora station with artists I like and daft punk songs and some mainstream 80s bands.
I also made huge buttons to put on the wall, if they don't like some song, they can click on skip and if I see they like something I click on thumb up.

If I know someone taste I add the artist they like as a seed.

This means the station will be varied at some time it will play some guys song and at some point play other guys song (it takes 4 songs to rotate to a new seed, less if you have 2 thumb downs without a thumb up during this 4 songs in a row thing).

Also I mostly use the same playlist, that means its a evolving thing. "Bad artists" will be removed (two thumb down songs, without him or one of his songs being a seed)

i was at this rich kid mental hospital for 4 months. there was a group called "music therapy" in which you would choose a song to play and then talk about what it means to you

it was horrific. i remember bits and pieces of it but most of my memories of that time were erased by ECT

i was masochistic and stupid enough to play "...A Psychopath" by Lisa Germano. this chick (who is the daughter of a famous country singer) had a massive panic attack about halfway through so i ran to the stereo and turned it off

a few days after the ECT i chose to play It's Alright Ma. i was being peppered with questions from rich/famous people's children about what it meant. who the fuck knows what i said but i think i remember it going on for a long time

So I'm an oldfag. 29 years old. Don't know why I'm still here.

Anyway when I was 17, in 2003 or 2004, I was a student senator. And as such I was allowed to hang out in the "student activities room" during my study period. Basically it was a closet sized room that we could hang out in unsupervised. There was a CD player in there.

Most study periods it was me, the class president, and two senior girls. All normie af.

After a couple times where I played music that didn't go over well (Against Me!, The Pogues, I was a "punk" you see,) I figured I would try to play something more normie-friendly. I brought Odelay by Beck, thinking it was mainstream enough.

It went over fine the first time I played it so I got cocky and put it on again the next day. Suddenly around the time it got to "Lord Only Knows" one of the senior girls snapped.

"NO MORE BECK. I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE."

The other girl agreed vehemently, "omg I'm glad you finally said something. I have a Trapt CD we can play."

The other girl was like, "Yes! Oh my god I'm so glad, I LOVE TRAPT."

They ducking loved Trapt so much. They'd sing along, sometimes just putting "Headstrong" on repeat.

From that moment forward I had to listen to Trapt at least three times a week. They never let me put a CD on again. Eventually I stopped going there for my study periods.

And Circa Survive isn't even obscure, really experimental, or inaccessible. It's like, how could they even dislike Circa, seeing as how they like that genre and vocal style. do they get weirded out the moment they hear good music? Are they just completely incapable of listening to something decent?
>>
>>66012453
you'd be surprised how many people will think you're cool with the arsenal of music you like, you just need to have an intuition of how "strange" you can introduce vs what they usually bang at parties and stuff. It's just a matter of being open and listening. I ended up hooking a huge chunk of sophomore students in high school because I introduced one of my new friends to Lonesome Crowded West. Then almost a couple years ago I go to a MM show and I ended up knowing and saying hi to so many people that I knew because of knowing the kid and his friends and then us listening to the music I had.

being funny really helps especially if you can hit the middle ground of being an asshole and being nice and genuine, if people bring up artists on your itunes or physical collection that you doubt they'd be into, make it known instead of shying away, just explain in a sentence or two what's cool about them and then follow up with; "but it's not really for everyone so I can see if you'll find it weird." that opens them up to listen to it to prove they're not close minded and if they don't like it they'll still give merit of some kind to it for trying and a person they like (you) liking and telling the truth of what they might not like

Most of those posts are actually people that got it right. Did you answer wrongly just to rile everyone up?
>>
Two of my friends are sort of into music and wanted to know what I had been listening to lately. I made the unfortunate mistake of not lying to them. I had been getting into Yellow Magic Orchestra and I played "Firecracker". Never have I gotten a stare so blank.

>I GET BORRRRED I DO GET BORRRREDD
>IN THE FLAT FIEEEEEEELLLLLDDDD
Perfectly acceptable for a party.
And Joy Division IS the most depressing shit around. Their only musically upbeat songs are "Isolation" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart" which are both lyrically pretty massive bummers.
Post-punk is definitely the way to go though for rock people.

>decide to put music designed to piss them off
>Hanson, early Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls
>everyone gets a nostalgia trip, but the goths were foaming from their mouths
>got a A for the movie

That was pretty fun.
Then I decided to put some King Diamond in science class to piss off the stuck up chicks (and because the teacher likes King Diamond and Mercyful Fate)

In 11th grade art class I put on Wax Simulacra by The Mars Volta because the teacher and I were big fans. It was hilarious how quickly the nearest student turned down the volume on the speakers. Normies literally cannot comprehend muic outside of there comfort zone.

I can't imagine how much money MBV have lost because of people hating BFMV and confusing them
>>
I once played Merzbow in history class back in high school. The reactions I got were from indifference to 'so what'.

of all the Mars Volta and ATDI songs
>>
>>66016778
They're two different bands

the first formed was MBV, an irish shoegaze band, who /mu/ like and released quite good records

the second was BFMV, a welsh metal band, who /mu/ don't like and are the sort of pop metal that 12 year olds were into, a short while ago

in a nutshell
