What makes certain music "cheesy?" What do you think artists can do to avoid making cheesy music?

DID SOMEBODY SAY CHEESE?
>>
have good taste + be cool. music is basically an application of these two skills and cheese is what it sounds like when people who have bad taste try to make music.
>>
I think of the term cheesy as being overused as hell to the point where its easy to get away with.
>>
melodramatic, cliches, trying desperately to recreate others' sounds

I feel like there's definitely music that's cheesy too. Like it's somewhat synonymous with "trying too hard."
>>
cheesy ≠ bad

Keep away from novelty and fads, be restrained in what instruments you use and how much you use them, don't be preachy or melodramatic with your lyrics, don't value a concept over how pleasing the actual music sounds, don't attempt to make your music more grand and bombastic than it actually is.

Almost up there with Twenty One Pilots. Almost.

Rhapsody is so cheesy but I still love it. It's past over-the-top into a brand new realm. But, I think it helps that they really embrace how cheesy they are.

agreed

I'd say "cheesy" is something that happens when something is aesthetically or emotionally over-the-top.

So like, cheesy hair metal is just over-the-top hair metal--which honestly, is the only hair metal I'm interested in hearing.

But if you take something like confessional singer/songwriter stuff, "cheesy" means you laid the sadness on too thick. It's not believable, anymore. It's too much.
