Basically there's tempo which is how fast the song is, like Punk vs a slow piano song.
And then time signature is kind of the groove of the song. 3/4 and 6/8 kind of have a swing feel like in songs such as Blueberry Hill by fats domino where as the more common 4/4 and 2/4 have a more straightforward sound. And some bands like Soundgarden make use of complex signatures like The Day I tried to live which is a 15/4 beat. You can usually figure it out by following the high-hat rythm the drummer is playing.
