>>
>>65831068
I don't have access to Paint right now but The Seer and TBK are both 9s and The Glowing Man is a strong 7 to light 8. The Seer is my personal favorite
>>
>>65831820
Man what do people have against the shorter songs on the glowing man. Also the error on Frankie M stops it being a 10/10.
>>
it was complete 2 years ago

now it's a quadrilogy
>>
>>65831954
Would you shut up about that.

God are you trying to make that a meme or something?
>>
>>65831068
TGM>TBK=The Seer
>>
>>65831954
Actually as soon as I posted I reconsidered Frankie M is more of a 9 while the shorter tracks are more like 7s. The impression I got was that TGM is more consistent in quality than the other two which my ratings don't really suggest.
>>
>>65831975
My Father isn't a 2 hour long odyssey though
>>
>>65832086
it is with the bonus track
>>
>>65831954
Is it really an error? It was mastered by the same guy who mastered the seer, they record the long tracks live in the studio together, I think he just choked the cymbal and it sounds cut short because the guitars had to be upped in the mix and caused the cymbal. It doesn't hurt the song in any way regardless imo.
>>
>>65832137
This, the 15:36 meme needs to end.

The Seer is clearly my favorite. the other two are also great but ultimately Glowing Man > To Be Kind, slightly more interesting record
>>
>>65831820
dude 4 for 93 ave b blues and daughter brings the water are you nuts
>>
>>65832235
93 Ave is noodling and noise but without the kind of scale or atmosphere as Apostate of Cloud of Unknowing. Daughter is some of the worst singing Gira has ever done. I guess it's kinda beautiful but his range just isn't good enough.

>>65832199
Your ratings for The Seer don't make any sense. How is the title track not miles better than The Wolf, The Seer Returns or 93 Ave?
>>
>>65832318
Daughter was sung by Karen O, you aren't thinking of The Wolf?

Nope, still 30 minutes short.

intentional or not, still sounds horrible.

Which by the way, the song itself is like the most overrated thing they've ever done, why do people love it so much?

longtime Swans fan here, been one of my favorite bands since I picked up "children of god" from a bargain bin back in 95
loved "my father...", enjoyed "the seer" but didnt feel the need to go back to it, was completely dissapointed by TBK to the point where I doubted it was actually a Swans record at first and listened to TGM for the first time today
I enjoyed it up until Frankie M, that is probably the worst song ever recorded under the Swans name, then came "when will I return" that made me miss Jarboe a lot, the title track was ok and "finally, peace" was good

overall, I'm glad this trilogy ended, maybe now M. Gira will start writing songs again instead of long, pointles jam sessions.
Also, the female vocals in all 3 albums really suck, he should just let Jarboe back in the band

Real happy to see a pretty much unanimous love for The Apostate on here. That track is maybe my favorite thing that they've ever done, and the greatest album closer of the 21st century so far.
>>
>>65836229
That's interesting. I wish I was a fan long before this latest iteration and going in with the context of all their previous material and having settled in my tastes when it comes to the band to then be surprised by the re-formation and the type of material they churned out.

We have pretty different tastes, I love TS and TBK, but I respect your differing opinions. Isn't there anything you like about TBK though? I think that record, more so than any other really harken's back to that pure primal raw loudness of their 80s material. It does so while being completely different, of course, but I fucking love the energy of that thing. It is repetitive, but it's so detailed.
>>
>>65836229
I'm glad there is someone else here who is more a fan of the shorter songs on the glowing man.

my main issue with TBK is that it just does absolutely nothing for me, it's like mike realized that "soundtracks.." was being praised by post-rock fans and just went that way, it felt like 10 versions of "mother of the world" with tamer vocals, it doesnt even sound like him most of the time, his deep, low vocals where one of my favorite things and in TBK they where completely gone. Luckily they came back in TGM, slightly
And TBK is nothing like their 80s or even 90s releases, "the burning world" had at least memorable tracks.
One of the funny things is that up to the reunion, SFTB was considered one of their lesser outputs and was just a "b-sides and rarities" album, like "omniscience", even by the man himself. no one expected it to be a cult classic and hailed as their best by many ppl

anyways, there is no such thing as a bad Swans album, specially in the pre-breakup era.
>>
>>65836825
>it felt like 10 versions of "mother of the world" with tamer vocals

Man, I get what you're saying but that's so not true. Certainly most songs operate on that level of a riff that repeats forever, but every single track on TBK actually builds and evolves, and goes places. Mother of the World is like an intentionally cruel intro that doesn't really change much. That is not true for any song on TBK.

TBK is nothing like their 80s material in sound, no. But in aggression and loudness and rawness it totally is. It shares more in common with 80s era swans than anything else that came after. Come on, man Oxygen or A Little God in My Hands aren't the slightest bit memorable to you? You're gonna sit here and say the material from fucking Burning World had more to offer than those?

>One of the funny things is that up to the reunion, SFTB was considered one of their lesser outputs and was just a "b-sides and rarities" album, like "omniscience", even by the man himself. no one expected it to be a cult classic and hailed as their best by many ppl

I did not know this, interesting. But it's not surprising, this is the case with most classics, the widespread appreciation comes with time.
>>
>>65836817
>Some Things We Do - 9

Man, even the most intense TBK fanboys have to put this track down even if it is at a minuscule level. Why do people dislike this track? It's a fantastic track, it's really moody and atmospheric unlike most tracks on TBK, the strings are haunting and Gira's delivery is on point.

I love it, but I never see that same sentiment anywhere.
>>
>>65837039
>Mother of the World is like an intentionally cruel intro that doesn't really change much

well, I actually dig that track, but it was just an example of the formula they repeated in the whole trilogy

>But in aggression and loudness and rawness it totally is

that's been their trademark live since the start, their albums always been a different thing, that was part of the charm. they are one of the few bands that could be brutal live while releasing gr8 songs on their albums.

>Oxygen or A Little God in My Hands aren't the slightest bit memorable to you

I can sing "saved" and "I remember who you are" by memory (and I listened to TBW much less than TBK). But thats what actually bothers me, maybe there was potencial for a memorable album, but they just went with the 30 minute crescendos and the good parts got lost.

of course, this is just my opinion
>>
>>65837585
You have every right to your opinion but its just strange. I can remember every groove by heart from all their new albums, including My Father. Each has a very unique edge to it.

>Frankie M.
>Worst song ever recorded by Swans

>>
>>65837585
>I can sing "saved" and "I remember who you are" by memory

You remember those but not the actually amazing closer that is the one truly shining moment on that album? Like so much so I'm willing to admit it is one of the best songs that Gira has ever written.

You're killing me, man.

I guess TBK just really isn't for you, nothing wrong in that. The crescendo thing would be a knock against it if they were actual tame and unmemorable crescendos like standardized by-the-book post-rock. But it's SWANS we're talking about here, these songs go places you can't predict and get louder than you knew you wanted them.
>>
>>65837723
I agree with him. I don't understand the love for it. The intro at this point feels completely formulaic, Gira moaning over crashing cymbals for 10 minutes until something actually happen. Main verse is cheese and poorly delivered. Who had a straight face during MDM--A

Let it be known that Frankie M is shit.
>>
>>65837779
you mean "god damm the sun", its one of the few songs and can play and sing in the guitar. just didn't want to go for the obvious one, the blind faith cover is awesome, and I hate clapton

TBK just bored me to tears, luckily the're still the best live band in the world and will be seeing them soon

>>
okay im not gonna lie
To Be Kind as a whole is a great album, I'd give it a 9.
I've only listened to the first CD of Glowing Man and I thought it was pretty good. More of a trance-inducing album. As if it's suppose to be the audio form of what it's like to be, well, glowing. If this is what Gira was after for, he damn well achieved it within the first half of the album.
