Difficult to describe. I like the sense that Stoner himself is a fairly uninteresting character who doesn't really accomplish or do anything notable, which I find unique since usually the protagonist in most books is at least interesting and charismatic. I guess the fact that William Stoner lived a relatively calm and regular life appeals and relates to me. This is a poorly worded response, but it's early in the morning and I can't articulate why I enjoyed it.

greaves(or whoever the author is) turns the subtext into text. what is interesting is not the 'project' itself (what greaves shows us he should be shooting), but the production of the project (which we witness), and, crucially, the commentary by those tangential to the project as to why this might be included. and moreover, whats interesting is that we witness commentary as to why this commentary is even interjected in the first place.
greaves doesn't literally say why the total film is just production and commentary and metacommentary, (and so on), but he evidently edits all the tape to further these themes. it seems ramshackle, but its stunningly deliberate (and prompts the question if what is purportedly 'real' is not just another fictive/scripted level designed by the author himself).
so i find this text/subtext dissolution stimulating. its hofstadter brought to film (and years earlier too i think)

but the film is BRILLIANT when another (supposedly) unexpected/unscripted interaction takes place. if i remember correctly, its the only part of the film which isn't digested/commented on by the film itself. its brechtian (i think), in the best way: instead of extending the commentary further, which would be didactic/moralizing, it leaves it to the audience to make a desired emotional/empathetic leap (because of this choice, im not making the scene or the upshot more explicit). without this scene, the film might just be seen as an intellectual do-nothing-- navel gazing and lightweight. but scene grounds the film socially/ideologically, and gives it real teeth, imo.
but close-up does (nearly) all of this better, and is what people should be seeing.

Thanks for the detailed response man. I suppose I just wasn't that entertained or intrigued by it when I watched it. I understood it was supposed to be somewhat of a social experiment rather than a conventional or abstract film but I suppose I just didn't connect with it and find anything they were doing that interesting. The scene where the crew have a private meeting without Greaves was actually pretty good and you're right about all the coincidental encounters being the best part of the film. I could have listened to that homeless guy at the end for hours. Regardless I'll probably watch it again and take some of the reasons you've mentioned into consideration. You're right about close-up being the superior film for conveying these ideas aswell.
