I like Swans and I pretentious things. I think people do themselves a disservice when they try to defend their tastes through claims of unpretentiousness.

Not pretentious, just ill-considered. All the ideas are fucking great, pretension arises when the ideas aren't great but the artist thinks they are - so again, not pretentious.
HOWEVER: All these great ideas are beaten into the fucking ground to the point where any novelty or interest those ideas may have held is destroyed. This is my problem with 80% of Swans' back catalogue. So much of their music overstays its welcome. They would be my favourite band if not for their lack of taste and restraint vis a vis track length and album sequencing. I have similar feelings about Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds actually.
