There's a severe lack of DAW descriptions in the wiki. If you're good with your tool of choice, consider writing a paragraph about it.

I know this isn't exactly music/prod/ but I trekked out into the woods into the wee hours for three nights until I finally captured this last night. I'm pretty happy with it. It's just the right amount of chilling.

So I thought I'd share with mah /prod/bros if anyone's interested in recordings.

This in E minor. Supposed to be a trance song.

Well the distant pack (that starts to the left) must have been like half a mile or so, the one(s) off to the right were like 300-400ft from the recorder.

mmm anon this is cumpfy as fuck. i think your melody needs some hammering-out, just to make it sound more deliberate. but it definitely gets bumpin halfway through.

also Em is my favorite key

I'm loath to post it because I was just asking for technique tips. I spent today learning the riff from Ain't Talking 'Bout Love and wanted to post a clyp.it to ask for tips on how to get better.
https://clyp.it/rx55nobn
>>
>>65720313
What angle you picking at? Sounds like you're getting a lot of scraping. Not a bad technique, but it doesn't really suit that riff. Parallel might sound better.
>>
>>65720477
I don't even know what angle I was picking at. Probably something to look out for, cheers.

it's p early on in making it, but is this part even salvageable? i'm trying to go for stuff like antikriist, but shittier since i'm making it. most of it is just the raw data manipulated and played over me fucking with my amp to make it noisier most of the time. that and then effects on top of effects.

Hey fellas I got a chance to get an otari 1/2" 8 track mx5050 for 1k and if I got that I would have a process like pic related.

However I could just get a tascam dp-24. I am kind of a dick about tone and I am not afraid to work on stuff but I'm also not trying to spend 1k more than I have to but also it wouldnt kill me.

Any advice?

Is this the right thread for this?

What are /prod/s thoughts on track dynamic range?
Personally ive been mixing my tracks with drums around 6-10db above the average volume, i cant stand listening to stuff that has the percussion crushed to nothing.
>>
>>65721914
dynamic range is for classical music and prog rock. push everything up
>>
>>65722013
So you like listening to a brick wall in terms of dynamics?
>>
>>65721738
First off, instruments/mics go to the board before the deck, so that pic is pretty retarded. You probably know that, but verify your signal flow is going to work before committing 1k to it. If it's in good condition then it will sound good, but do the research on that particular model and see what you might be up against in terms of maintenance. Do you enjoy doing upkeep on your equipment? Personally, I'd go digital over anything but a well maintained 24 track. An RME Multiface and a copy of Reaper would be a lot less hassle with a lot more flexibility and can sound just as good if you are indeed a dick about tone. Reaper and an interface is less sexy, no doubt. Would this be for personal projects or you intending to move into small scale commercial? Tape has marketing appeal, but 8 track tape is going to filter out a lot of potential projects. Did I ask if you enjoy maintaining equipment yet? Have you priced out tape? If this is all old news then go for it. Check out Tapeop, both the mag and the forum.
>>
>>65722197
I like working on stuff. I am an electronics technician by training and occupation. I would be purchasing the Otari from a friend who runs a studio by my house (he used it for tape delay mostly, he records to 2 inch and he got a a 1 inch which made the Otari redundant). This would be for my personal use. Not to be gay but I have somewhat of an allergy to DAWs as I dislike computers and the clicking and dragging and such despite the obvious benefits that going that route entails. Any method which is primarily knob and slider driven really helps my work flow, I have found.

As far as total sound, though, would the Tascam @ 24 bits do me well? I'm not trying to go the reel to reel route so I can look like some hipster douche with a handbar moustache on a pennyfarthing, I just want to make recordings that sound excellent.

As well I am not sure I need very many tracks, but then again I am sure when I have it all in front of me I will always want more.
>>
>>65721914
A lot of modern genres just have a naturally small window where primary instruments can sit. Anything with synthetic or looped-sample percussion is going to camp out at some level and dictate where the rest of the instruments fall. Careful production can widen it, but really, in a typical hip hop track just how low can the drums be, right?

Film dynamic range is the worst. The swings are absurd. I actually have a compressor permanently in line ready to go to deal with this shit. If the average quiet talking volume is such that to hear it, you'll get destroyed by something loud later, than the audio is just wrong. Fuck you David Lynch, you're the prime offender.

I approach dynamics on a per-instrument basis, and usually the range is part of the performance, which is part of the song. On DAW-based electronic pieces it's easy to default to 127 velocity and roll with it. You're forced to intentionally find reasons to manipulate dynamics in a way that comes naturally to acoustic instruments. It's definitely worth finding out what those reasons are via experimentation, because static volumes are boring as fuck, especially once you have a dozen tracks all crowding for attention.
>>
>>65719978
I just recently started trying to take playing seriously, or at least I'm trying to get good enough to play with other people. It's helped a couple times when /prod/ing has demanded guitars, or at least a couple chords. My favorite producer also incorporates a lot of guitar in his stuff so I get the fun of aping him
>>
>>65722422
Sounds like you have enough know-how to at least make the machine work for you. DAW allergy is legit - workflow is the most important thing in any craft. You can make full fledged records on 8 tracks, it's just takes planning, which takes experience. And you'll learn faster with those limitations then without them.

I just looked up the DP24 and am skeptical. The price is pretty low for 8 mic pres, converters, and all the rest of the hardware & features. Like, really skeptical. If it actually sounds good then it's a steal.

Do you have a board yet? If not you'll need to budget that in alongside the deck. If so then a lot of what the tascam does is redundant.
>>
>>65722755
Thank you very much. You have helped me decide. Hopefully in a few months I will have something to show for it.

>>
>>65724748
Choice in sample is alright but its too repetitive, your slices are whack and i can hear every time it jumps. This is probably cause there's no central rhythm in the clyp. definitely needs more going on, keep at it and bring it to life.
>>
>>65725789
percussion is fine for me, unique and doesn't ruin the sound for me. Near 2:05 when the delayed arps come on in the background, it sounds tight & imo it should feel more distinct from the rest of the track.

real nice i digged it
