I don't care if he started sewing to cope with the loss of his left testicle, there was a mystique around this band and now I know what they ate for breakfast. When I got into Rush in the late nineties it was doubtful they would ever play again, little was known and they were never seen. I hate the tabloid era of music, I don't care about the humans making the music, I care about the product.

I think like all people, they get old and priorities change. I don't see it as a form of selling out. It's the same reason I still listen to Brian Eno or Tom Waits or Primus. I like bands during their more idealistic phases, but I also appreciate seeing bands evolve into more pragmatic approaches.

I just know that songwriting is a gift, just like playing well. It takes more energy than people think, I could barely do it in my twenties and that filter in your brain that keeps and discards ideas seems to go to shit right about mid-forties for most artists
and they most definitely sold-out, which doesn't bother me, but we got such little live stuff before, every four albums, the best being A Show of Hands, and now that their skills are obviously going we get R30, R40, Making if the Hockey Theme, etc, just flooding the market with merch that costs a shit-ton

I would suppose they did more live albums more recently because they had the budget for it and because doing so has become cheaper. They have more independence from their labels to fund their stuff since they know they're gonna make a certain return because of their fanbase.
Merch is annoying, but its unavoidable in this current landscape. Just do what I do and make a b-line for your seats when you go see a band. Let the retards pay $40 for a t-shirt while you wear your $10 home-made print screen with original artwork.

yeah, by merch I meant the DVD shit but the shitty t-shirt prices is just a fact of life, like I said before, Rush was dead when I got into em and ebay wasn't a thing so I had to go to dope shops and buy old concert T's, and we had a real record store where I bought the original bootleg tape of the 95 Palace of Auburn Hills Counterparts tour because I live an hour from Detroit, so I'm sitting on the best copy of that with tracks that I'm pretty sure never made any of the official release, might drop it on YouTube someday
