He knows that his character has no "authenticity" whatsoever, he just perverts "poptimism" into a grotesque show but always kept it rated Teen to be able to be able to be seen in the mainstream culture. He in fact played against mainstream culture but in methodetical way, compared to every other "edgy" bands who did unconsciously and became popular after some time, then began to be named "Sell-out".
Maybe not all his songs explain that thing he did, but he sure portrays in many interviews and how smart he was compared to the interviewer.
