The fact of matter (from someone who likes anime a lot) anime was a cultural answer in Japan to the growing trend of Cartoons in America. Mickey Mouse and Betty Boop have a lot more influence on all anime than some people who like it let it be known. It was a medium for entertainment purely and that's all it ever will be for, manga however is an exception to this as the author can explore more thematics in a more vivid way. Also, no, you can't "ad nauseum this sentiment for music as not all music developed solely for entertainment (in fact the basis of music isn't entertainment) unlike anime.
