Remember to use your tone knobs, kiddos!

Alright fags, guess what this is. I feel like this one might be hard mode. Would normally be more distorted, but keeping it down because of neighbors.

Friendly reminder: the kiddies who post in /gg/ threads have nearly ***zero*** experience concerning guitar. Playing, repair, new player recommendations, etc. The average age in these threads is around early 20s: green as shit grass.

If you have an actual question this is probably one of the most uninformed & least knowledgeable places you could ever expect a proper answer to come from.

Be weary of any advice given here as it's amateur & perfunctory at best.

Have a nice day.

Also, friendly side note:

Anyone posting their gear here has made a decision (either consciously or unconsciously) that playing guitar is nothing more than a meaningless hobby, something along the lines of stamp or coin collecting. Their uninformed opinions and amateur advice are firmly rooted in this unserious mindset, music being secondary to the compulsion to accumulate and publicly display their "enviable" possessions.

4chan is considered poison by most mature adults and is rightly shunned publicly for its immature, juvenile, and sometimes vile content. Lorde and the bassist from DIIV immediately spring to mind, both being heavily criticized for posting on 4chan and for their seeming willingness to be connected publicly to /mu/. No one with any real goals or aspirations would risk being contaminated with an association to this website, thus no serious musician would chance being recognized by posting their gear here. The only people who would be willing to subject themselves to this possibility would be the kind of hopeless, self-defeating troglodytes that routinely post on 4chan because they know they don't have any other options and nothing better (or more important) to do with their time. If you're posting on this site then you should be very familiar and thoroughly acquainted with this standard model 4chan user. There's no deliberate or pragmatic pursuit of knowledge or skill in these threads, just inane, unending circle jerking around gear, attention whoring, and fishing for replies.

For example: Aussiefag has been here for well over two years accomplishing absolutely nothing except for *getting some attention for himself*. The sad truth is that he has nothing else, this is his legacy: replying to other losers in /gg/ threads because his life is obviously devoid of any other social interaction.

If your goal is to wind up like this then posting gear here ad nauseum and avoiding actual musical discussion is definitely a good place to start.

Carry on.

Who here has evolved past traditional amps/cabs?

One of these babies direct into a studio monitor at practice or the PA at gigs provides me with all the power and tubey goodness I could need. Plus, this thing can dial in whatever tone I could possibly need.

alright I posted at the ass end of the last thread so I'll repost it one more time, sorry

hi, new bassist here
I've been producing music for a long time so I know the basics of production at least

however, when it comes to guitars and analog stuff I'm completely fucking retarded.
With that out of the way...
I bought my first bass today. I didn't buy an amp, however. Why? I have a Focusrite Saffire audio interface.

The thing is, it outputs the guitar yeah, but it's super fucking quiet. Even when I have the line mode set to "instrument", I still need to turn every knob on the thing to max, and it's still quiet (and heavily overdriven)

Do I need to buy an amp to daisy chain it to my audio interface or am I just doing something stupid?
>>
>>65531231
>turn every knob to max
>still quiet
>and overdriven

That's curious. Is that when you're not running any plugins on the track? Bass (especially a cheap bass) recorded direct will sound quiet and farty when unaffected, but you should still be able to bring it up to level normally. And it definitely shouldn't be overdriven. Try putting it through a bass amp sim, maybe the direct sound alone is throwing you off

That's because you don't turn up your levels on the interface, you should bring up a compressor instead, that won't overdrive anything.
It might bring up some noise though.

Bought a 2000$ guitar, conclusion after a few weeks: not "worth" it but super nice. If you have cash to spare it's great for the added comfort and to have something that had so much attention to detail put into it.
For most people, midrange guitar with a proper setup/fretjob and maybe new PUs will essentially be the same, it just won't be as nice and coherent and requires some work.

The question would be which guitar? For some the price says nothing about the overall quality.
>>
>>65533265
Speaking as someone who's put in the work into my cheap guitar over many years, my guitar IS as coherent and nice as a $2000 guitar. That said, it's a pretty simple guitar, the sort of configuration most people wouldn't bother with a $2000 version of. It's just a les paul.

People spending $2000 on guitars with no outstanding features outside of tone is ass-backwards retarded, but I don't see any issue with people spending as much on guitars with non-traditional features and ergonomics, high quality active electronics, or ornate decoration. That depends on how much you value those features.

Without those major differences you have to get more and more picky to find a feature that for some reason you actually value enough. Usually it winds up being something vague like craftsmanship, because if you got any more specific, you'd sound like an idiot.

The guy's literally mad that people say not to buy gibson, and he's too afraid to say so because he knows he can't defend his argument. The post is stupid, because it acts like it's a warning for new players when really the advice for new players on /gg/ is consistent and fair. What the post really says is that people who have been playing for a few years don't have the girth of experience to have a valid preference or opinion on guitars. The guy is just defending his stance of "x famous musicians plays a les paul, so I should too" instead of the actual details that make a guitar a good or bad purchase, not least of which being a fair price.

He's arguing that you need credibility for preference. He makes this generalized post as if it has any meaning to shore up his own damaged ego just because he got in a drunk argument and made a fool of himself.

Not the fag but I spent 700 euro's on a gibson and it's honestly the best money I've spent so far. I do hate a lot of their models though but not because they are quality or not. Guitar gear is really fucking subjective. Stuff like weight of a guitar or thickness of a neck, or the fact that the neck is finished or not and how much is what can really make or break a guitar for you.

Alright folks, here's hint number two, the second solo from this song. Hint number one was that this is related to Carlos Santana

Why are all Mexican Jazzmasters 700-1300 euro's when standard strats and tele's are 600-900.
>>
>>65537295
Because they are IN DEMAND
>>
>>65537295
Fender cannot enforce copywrite over the strat shape, but it can enforce copywrite over jazzmasters. Thus they can charge whatever they want. Just like rickenfuckers.
>>
>>65537338
>>65537319
Guess I'm buying a second hand one then.
>>
>>65537354
The price increase is still gonna be there, unfortunately. You'll save money, but it'll still be more than a used strat of similar quality. The smarter thing to do, though something not everyone is willing to do, is to simply choose a guitar that has healthy market competition. Unfortunately jazzmaster pickups are not very popular outside of jazzmaster clones, so for the tone a retrofit is the cheapest option. On the other hand the jazzmaster tone isn't as desirable to most as other pickups. In short, take this chance to reevaluate what you want.

Some will see this as compromising your ideals... You gotta know what you really want to know that for sure.

>>65532194
I don't know. I feel like I've hit a plateau with electric stuff, I can play pretty much anything except some super-technical shredding, which I don't like in the first place.
With acoustic I'm trying to work on my singing/playing and fingerpicking, but even there I'm just practicing the same handful of things over and over and can learn most new songs very quickly.

I've been thinking about getting into classical guitar but I know I'd have to actually learn to read music, which I've tried and failed to do twice, and am worried I'd do again and end up learning /dreadful technique/ and never get past low-intermediate level.

In my effort to be witty I made my meaning obscure. What I mean to say in short and in no uncertain terms is that modelers have been getting progressively better over time, and they've earned their reputation for being shitty thanks to the fact that they were all shitty at some point.

I think today's top modelers are hugely useful, and astoundingly realistic. The versatility and consistency beats every other option for amplification.

>>
>>65540541
I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending something to buy, but I'd be comfortable recommending you look into the boss gt-100, line6 pod hd500x, zoom g5n, and roland cubes. There's more if you're open to software, but those are the big leaders when it comes to dedicated units.

The problem with shopping for modelers is nothing does only modeling. You have a whole lot of other factors to think about. The cube is the easiest but less giggable since it isn't made as much with direct out to mains in mind, but on the other hand the amps are tailored to match the built in speaker.
