This Was Probably A Lot More Fun Live
6.5
It's clear that this man attended many an Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath concert as a kid, the way he strikes up the heavy metal-inspired riffs that litter the more energetic side of this record. While Rogèrio's vocal is certainly nothing special, at all, his manic delivery serves the satirical sentiment of the album quite well. The stuttering shouts, the overdramatized repetitive proclamations, it all fits. And the juxtaposition of latin plucked melodies and tremolo-picked Randy Rhoads riffs worked far better than I could have ever imagined.
Really the biggest problem I had with this record was the absurd repetition of some of the refrains. This record could have easily been 40 minutes and communicated the exact same sentiment and message. Rather than evolve the sound of each track, Rogèrio spends a good chunk of each song promoting the exact same words and instrumental backing, and it becomes very grating very quickly. "Cu e Boca" especially nearly drove me insane with this unnecessary structure, bringing on this terrible feeling of deja vu. The repetition played out better on the softer tracks like "Musica Suave", where it became a subject of meditation. I quite enjoyed the latin style guitar performance on this track as well that does a beautiful job of Asserting the "tranquila" theme.
It's always interesting listening to portuguese songs, being someone pretty fluent in Spanish yet not a native speaker. It creates a sort of ad-lib fill-in-the-blank experience that I found quite fun at the better parts of this record. Anyway, I'd say one of the later Skylab albums is more worth your time, but there are some interesting guitar performances here and a couple tracks that'll stick in your head.
