Let's have a good, clean discussion where we post and recommend some good black metal. Old stuff, new stuff, whatever.

Favorite Les Légions Noires release? Aäkon Këëtrëh - Dans La Foret is one of my favorites, even though it isn't really Black Metal.

>>65474391
Striborg would be a really weird way into the genre, but he's one of my favorite black metal artists. However there aren't a lot of artists with a sound similar to him. Obviously check out the entire 2nd wave Norway scene throughout the 90's. Bands like what >>65474784 posted are great, as well as Satyricon, The Covenant, Dissection.

>>65474404
Antihumanism sounds really lame.

>>
>>65475140

>>

try what other people are posting but don't worry if you don't like the canon. i love black metal but think emperor, enslaved, immortal, dissection, windir, xasthur, and several others are quite bad. there's great stuff out there but lots of bands have severe quality control issues.

black metal in all is about atmosphere and it always has been
>>

ITS NOT NOVEMBER REEEEEEEE
>>
>>65478625
Of course i am, I'm not trying to argue that extreme thrash metal with harsh vocals was the peak of black metal.
>>65478644
also this, 90s atmoshit was great.
>>
>>65478644
Atmosphere has been an important part but the 2nd wave sacrificed other musical elements for the sake of atmosphere and pushed it to the lead role, instead of a supporting part to the actual instrumentation.
>>
>>65478683
>black metal
>instrumentation
black metal has literally never been about instrumentation, none of the great black metal acts were virtuosos at either songwriting or technical skill, what are you smoking?
>>
>>65478679
Good to hear you're alright. I'm not saying that thing either who is?

>>65478710
Not virtuosos no, but again atmosphere used to play a supporting role until the 2nd wave, and that change is musically less complex and varied.
>>
>>65478710
fucking this, it was just a bunch of edgy teenagers who found a riff they liked and then played it for a fucking cassette player
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ionNHq0xJuQ
>>
>>65478746
>I'm not either
well if you're saying the 90s were the downfall of black metal, then clearly by default the 80s have to be the high point, unless you found evidence of 70s proto black metal in some record store in belguim or something.
>it's a "it's only atmospheric if it has fuzzy noises" meme
Bathory's entire appeal is their atmosphere, their riffs are mediocre, and they often played their music while drunk (so, not technically amazing). But they sounded like satan came up from hell himself and put his own twist on thrash metal, which at the time was some of the most extreme music every invented.
>>65478773
>it was just a bunch of edgy teenagers who found a riff they liked and then played it for a fucking cassette player
and that's the best part about it

>>65478837

Second, I just said the 2nd wave was less musical than other waves. I have made no judgement on quality. Second, all that shit you said about Bathory is either nonsense or irrelevant. That's where the 90s atmospheric style pioneered sure, but they aren't reflective of the 1st wave as a whole.

Idunno anon, these statements seem to imply that 90s black metal was worse than 80s black metal, so unless you're implying that somehow black metal got better after the 90s (which is possible but an argument i certainly have never heard), then it's safe to assume that you think the 80s is the peak.
>all that shit you said about Bathory is either nonsense or irrelevant

Well if your literal argument was just that 90s black metal is overrated and that all other eras are fine, then I apologize. You'd be the first person I've known to ever say the words "the 90s invented atmoshit" and not think the 80s were the peak.
>>
>>65479046
Oh, so you're talking aesthetics. I thought we were talking about extreme music, not image and shit. Who cares if a band has a spooky edgy image?
>>

considering that is the reason they became famous, a lot of people. Also

>>
>>65479131
Alright, then i apologize. I hear this argument all the time in /metal/ so I assumed you were going form the same standpoint. It's really weird having something like this not delve into riff vs atmofag.

The music? Anon I don't want to accuse you of anything but what you are saying is poser talk.

define what you mean by that, because if what you mean is the technical composition of the songs then I don't know what to tell you.

>>65479179
I mean I care more about a band that makes good music then a band that made shit but had a kvlt image. Bathory was influential because it pioneered the tremelo picked riffs black metal would have in the second wave, not just because of satanic imagery.

>I mean I care more about a band that makes good music then a band that made shit but had a kvlt image
well no shit, that's why cradle of filth is awful, but you can't deny that that the aesthetic is a part of the appeal.
>Bathory was influential because it pioneered the tremelo picked riffs black metal would have in the second wave, not just because of satanic imagery.
I didn't explain why they were influential, i explained why they were popular. Those are two very different things. They were influential because of the vocals and tremelo picking, they were popular because edgy people saw them as extreme.
>>
>>65479006
there are more bands nowadays though so of course there is going to be more things you dislike. vegan black metal chef and cradle of filth don't represent the black metal community of 2000s, all the bands youve probably never fucking heard of do because thats the spirit of black metal. for me some of the best albums from some of the greatest black metal bands ever such as mutiilation all came out after 2000, and sure some more controversial genres such as depressive and national socialist gained traction in the 00s but black metal has always been controversial too and its an attempt to keep it that way

I never argued that the black metal scene now is bad, just that it has a certain aspect that I dislike, that's all. I prefer 90s black metal because I feel there's a certain bit of honesty and originality that's lost on a lot of modern bands. It's hard to explain, but i hear it in the music.

Other bands like Striborg worth checking out are Xasthur and Leviathan. The creator of Leviathan also released a side project called Lurker Of Chalice. Also worth a listen.

Could I have some Black Metal recommendations that would be similar to Woods of Ypres first release? Black Metal with good sound production, vocals that are distorted yet also understandable, and a sort of epic feeling?
