>Ween - The Mollusk
Oh man, this album is so fun to listen to. It somehow manages to make humorous songs that never stray into the "lol so random" category. On the first listen i had no idea what to expect with each new song and it's amazing how many different genres of music are represented on this album. The songs are short and sweet and never stay past their welcome. blue diamond/10

THRIFT STORE TOURNEY ALERT WEE WOO WEE WOO

Here is the template, the first 3 ""reviews"" (put whatever you want in your allocated box) is due on SUNDAY. I recommend doing one every 2 days or so so you don't run out of time.

Dr. John - Gris Gris:

What if Captain Beefheart took an inspirational journey to New Orleans and made an album you didn't have to pretend to understand? Soulful choirs, the smoky smell of gumbo, funky basslines, and our voodoo enthusiast tour guide Dr. John ready to lead us through an eccentric night in the city alleyways. "Gris Gris Gumbo Ya Ya" introduces us to our protagonist and suspicious friend we have no choice but to trust. Metallic guitar strums only add to the discomforting atmosphere. "Croker Courtbullion" finds us travelling, hiding from the chants and shrouded screaming heard around distant corners. Once arrived at the central hub comes the main production of what sounds like a burlesque show performed in a musty crypt by delusional conspirators. The only resolution given rests within the jabbering noises, whispering secrets resonant only under the shadow of a scarlet darkness. This album is a trip above the rest and warrants repeated listens for its conceptual ideas alone, the imagery conjured rivaled only by Tom Waits. A true album of passionate intent and cultured inspiration. Culminations of Funk, Tribal drumming, Rock, Gospel, and countless other perhaps dangerously novel ideas turned deadly serious. Also could that cover be any more fitting? It's like the precursor to Eraserhead.

Favorite songs: Danse Kalinda Ba Doom, Croker Courtbullion, I Walk on Guilded Splinters

I’m peeved the frick off so here’s the final of Ween “extras”

>Live in Toronto
An alright live piece with a few choice cuts like “Push Th’ Little Dasies” which is the best one I’ve heard yet, “The HIV Song” which was pretty damn good, and some choice cuts from the Mollusk/12 Golden Country Greats not found elsewhere. A little too lengthy for its own good sometimes (why is fluffy 14 minutes and Buenas Tardes Amigo 10??) and Deaner could’ve showed up with some better chops.
6

>Live in Chicago
Another choice live album. Great performances, recording, and song choice. Essential for anyone who’s a fan of The Mollusk b/c this has the most and best cuts from that album. Nothing super outrageous or outstanding like in Stubb’s, but damn good. Probably the best Transdermal Celebration, The Argus, and Ocean Man they’ve ever done. This album even had better versions of dome “eh” tracks from White Pepper like Voodoo Lady and Even If You Don’t, which are way more fun here.
8

>At The Cat’s Cradle, 1992
I don’t get it. This was kind of shit. Gene as usual isn’t as strong as Deaner, but here he just fucks up over and over again. Dude keeps playing it off like “dude opiates lmao” and sometimes Ween can have funny drug-related humor, but here it actually takes a toll on the quality of the songs. The most redeeming quality of this album is a very early version of “Buckinham Green” (which kicks so much ass and is honestly my favorite version) and the most cuts from Pure Guava, my favorite of Ween’s discog. People praise Cat’s Cradle for being “raw” but so is my unwashed erect cock and no one seems to love that as much.

Poly Styrene - Translucence (1981)
>new wave, twee pop

I didn't realize Poly Styrene was the frontwoman for X-Ray Spex, and god is her solo work different. Exceedingly pleasant, melodic, and well-written new wave, and her voice is so lovely. And when it gets super twee, it's even greater. The funkier, more erratic tracks aren't the greatest however, they just seem like kind of a poor imitation of Talking Heads or Tom Tom Club. But the album as a whole is quite wonderful.

3.0+

Tod Dockstader - 8 Electronic Pieces (1961)
>musique concrète, electronic, tape music

Of course this is influential and innovative as hell, but it's also shockingly enjoyable. The way these pieces mutilate and shift and oscillate is really cool to listen to. But atonality is very common here, and not in a good way. This was definitely an experiment, and at times not that enjoyable of an experiment to partake in. But at other times, it's the coolest damn thing I've ever heard. The album as a whole definitely leans much more towards the cool side, however.

3.0-

Cymande - Cymande (1972)
>funk, psychedelic soul

Oh, this was a disappointment. Everything about this sounds completely right up my alley, descriptions of it made it sound like a sister album to Afreaka! and Afreaka! is better than sex. But this is just kinda lame, it seems like it keeps trying and trying to reach a wondrous climax but it never quite makes it. This is especially apparent on the longer songs, I know that "Dove" is seemingly untouchable (a 10-minute long funk jam, you're fucking serious right?) but it's just like...slightly funkier smooth jazz, I don't like it at all. The shorter tracks are pretty amazing though, super breezy and lightly funky soul music. An album of the short songs would be pretty damn nice, but with the long songs I can't get /too/ into it. Still pretty nice though.

2.5-

古代祐三 - Bare Knuckle (1991)
>video game music, acid house, chiptune, acid techno

This is the /third/ video game soundtrack I've enjoyed the hell out of, and I don't even play games anymore. But man, this is really wonderful. Just a lot of really crazy and trippy acid house beats, except it's fucking chiptune, how amazing does that sound? Drags a little bit by the end, but when the beats are that amazing who cares?

I also think that Gumbo is amazing, but that's a straight up piano New Orleans RnB album. Nothing like his funky drugged out days at all. And if you liked Gumbo, In the Right Place is also good.

The rest of his straight up piano albums are pretty unremarkable otherwise, though. He didn't go back to the Night Tripper style until 2012, when he was in his 70s.

Fuck I have to “review” these, huh?

Oh, well.

Best to worst

>The Cure – Pornography
I KNEW IT.
I should’ve given this more than a few listens initially. I was so infatuated with later Cure stuff that this came as a surprise to me. Sorry AnonResident, if you even still exist. Miss u :(
8

>Chico Buarque – Chico Barque de Hollanda
Oh boy a meme cover. (from the 4:19 vs 4:20 meme btw.) OH BOY. IT’S ACTUALLY GOOD. Most of you may know this Brazilian Samba dude from Construção, his most popular work, but definitely give this a try, my dudes. His first album and full of relaxing short bursts of melodic sweetness.
7

>Boris – Smile
The first half of this album is alright, then after the fourth track it really picks up. Seriously, that 2nd to last track?? That “bonus” untitled track???? Up there if not better than the stuff on their more popular albums. I don’t think most Boris fans have heard this one, so definitely give this a shot if you’re into them, even if it is for just a few choice cuts, because they’re damn good.
7

>Brave Little Abacus – Masked Dancers…
Lmao some people are gonna hate me for putting this above Merzbow. I have somewhat of a soft spot for Emo, but something that always bugged me about this band are the song lengths. You can have a track that’s stacked and super powerful, but then a 5 minute period of wind-down nothingness. Seriously, why are these tracks nearing 8 eight minutes? Unlike Merzbow, they don’t reach more power when they go over like the 4 minute mark. Anyways, what isn’t overbearing is good, and emo h8rs can go be themselves because I won’t insult them for not liking some genre that’s not even worth it really.

Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony No. 9 (Karajan)

Well this was great. How unexpected :^)

But yes, I enjoyed this a lot. It's a very powerful and emotive piece done well by Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. It's also a piece I'm somewhat familiar with due to it being an incredibly well known work.

The first movement of the symphony is a great one. Excellent way to start something. It alternates between strong orchestral blasts and more calm but still intense sections. Nice and fierce like I like it.

The second movement is the movement I'm most familiar with. Partially because of that this is probably my favorite movement in the symphony. I absolutely adore the bouncy tempo of the movement. It's very playful sounding yet still works with the heavy feelings of the first movement and is still very vigorous.

The third movement is my least favorite one here (but still good). I just find it rather boring compared to what came before it. That's just me though and I'd probably appreciate it more if I had more knowledge on theory or something.

Like the second movement, the final movement is a movement I'm very familiar with. Pretty pleasant and powerful work again here. The vocals brought in on this are as strong as the orchestra and I like em.

Overall, great symphony. It's a classic of course and loved by many. I can easily see why and definitely consider it a favorite.

To sum things up:

So strong haha oh wow lol. 4.5/5.

And now film

Marcel Camus - Black Orpheus

Ah Brazil. When it comes to music, I know the country for having very fun stuff. This was a film that took place during a fun musical celebration but was an interpretation of the tragic tale of Orpheus and Eurydice.

When it came to visuals, this film was pretty good. Nice location, cool costumes (death costume was kinda cheesy though) and good camera work. It's nothing I'd call special but was very enjoyable stuff.

I wanna pet this dog so bad

>Merzbow – 1930
It’d be easy to talk about how these tracks are far too long for their own good, but part of this album’s immense power are the lengths, which makes for some winding and gripping moments. Maybe not as brutal as he gets credit for, but he makes me see hate.
6

>King Crimson - THRAK
This isn't that great, really, but it has some choice cuts. Surprised this isn't terrible, and is probably the best thing they've done since Discipline. Their least stale "proggy" output.
5

>Kate Bush – The Dreaming
Uh…this is supposed to be as good as Hounds of Love, but it’s not even close??? Seriously, some of these tracks are just straight annoying and not satisfying in the least. Unique, but the arrangements here have waaay too much going on for Bush’s brand of pop.
4

>Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Push the Sky Away
Nick Cave’s first ambient album. Seriously, this is so boring and devoid of anything that it might as well be tagged as “ambient pop.” Nothingness doesn’t create atmosphere, man.

>Eno – Taking Tiger Mountain
Only doing because this fuckhead keeps he showing up in my auto-recs (which are terrible, I keep getting Sonic Youth even though I haven’t rated a single one of their albums highly ever). I always have to say “I respect this dude’s influence on music but yadda yadda bleeech.” Fucking whatever it sucks.
3

>King Crimson – Lizard
Lmao this is awful. No wonder the wealth of prog sucks so hard when its main visionaries fail to do it right more than a few times.
3

>Jon – Smoke
Fuck off

The plot was definitely interesting. Who would've thought of turning Orpheus' and Eurydice's story into the story of two Brazilian lovers? Great and well executed concept.

The acting was good I guess. I've said before that I don't know much about acting and it seemed alright here. Yeah there's not much to say here other than "oh cool emotions".

The music was very cool. Brazilian music can be incredibly fun but also pretty emotional and both sides are shown here. Also, it does help that the whole film is very music based. Great stuff.

Overall, pretty enjoyable film. This probably won't become a favorite but it will most likely get a rewatch from me someday. Good stuff.

To sum things up:

Le Brazil. 4/5.

The main criticism is that he puts to much of his own into other people's work
You can clearly recognise a Karajan recording when you'be heard a few of his renditions before
>>

Some faggot started drawing music """"reviews"""", basically one little image of that dude for every song on an album, and a bit of text accompanying it. He was completely musically illiterate and had heard almost no music at all (so he reviewed a shitload of /mu/core, which he heard for the first time). Nice drums became a meme because it basically embodied the extent to which his musical analysis went, and it has now become synonymous with musical illiteracy while trying to review shit.

Thrift store tournament reviews, coming through.

>Woolly Leaves - Quiet Waters
I really don't have much to say about this one.
That sort of "one bloke with his guitar" music really leaves me cold. Always has, and going by every experience I've had with it, I believe it always will.

>Forest For The Trees - s/t
That's actually pretty neat. Getting a lot of colorful vibes through the extensive production. The blend of accoustic samples, electronic ornamentation, hip-hop inspired beats and the variation in vocal delivery puts the whole thing somewhere between annoying big beat bands or early electro-rock and trippy house or other druggy bleepy things.
I liked it.

>Flophouse - s/t
This sounds like something my big brother would play when I drop by and I nod all throughout, trying not to get too visibly bored.
The american folk and country influence can be refreshing at points but deep down it remains a very forgettable indie rock album.

>How Do I - Pluto
I can see this whole thing working. The band seems to have some sort of idea of what to do with all the instruments and synths they have.
BUT
I'll be damned if that wasn't one of the most dissengaged and dissengaging vocal performances I've heard in a long while.

>Surface Noise - Molded
Another very average album. It did take me back to the good old days of seeing people from my high school play in their bands as it reeks of the same sort of lack of inspiration yet presence of motivation. It has all you would expect from "that band these guys you know from afar are in" from the guitar power chords, the shoehorned synth bits, the generic mixing made by some guy who couldn't be bothered, the cheap cover...

>The Philosopher Kings - Famous, Rich and Beautiful
This was unsufferable. Absolutely unsufferable and I had a hard time making it to the end.
That previous album had little to no tricks and ornaments to make things look better than they are. THis one has all of it. ALL OF IT.
From the unnecessary background instruments you just notice enough to feel overwhelmed by the loudness of the ensemble, to the ad-libbed singing put way too high in the mix, to the two guitars overplaying each other.
Simply put, this is a funk rock fusion album that does everything wrong. One of the things that can make a funk hard groove work is the balance between all the parts and instruments involved in the song. By keeping everyone in their lane and having a tight interplay, you keep some room for volume and dynamic variation thus making every change in the track more efficient and exciting. Here, once the obligatory intro is over, everything is playing, all the time. Imagine a band with five guys that all want to be soloists at the same time, and no one can agree.
At best, it sounded like some of the funk rock Buckethead can be found doing with some dudes like Bernie Worrell and Brain, except with much worse guitar and very annoying vocals.

>Beulah - When Your Kite String Pops
Actually has some of the same issues of bloated production, but in a fairly different way. THis album doesn't try to have the same sort of groove so instead of maximizing its volume, it tries to create some atmosphere by being colorful in terms of textures. To the risk of ending up a little disjointed. Which it does.

Not sure if I'll listen to the remaining half of the albums for the tournament, go listen to some dub to chill myself out a little, or go back to Casiopea and draw reviews that do not say "Nice drums" because Akira Jimbo isn't in the next few albums I'll listen to.

Smoke - Another Reason to Fast
dunno about this one, the instrumentation doesn't really gel that well to create a cohesive whole, the lyrics are fun and so is the delivery, I just can't connect with it for some reason

Frank Zappa - Absolutely Free
God this one has some tasty jams
some of it's too silly for it's own good, but I can look past it because the instrumentation is pretty great, some of the textures as well are well ahead of their time

so this is pretty bitchin'. one of the few hiphop 'classics' that don't sound extremely dated. the blend of fun boast tracks with more conscious/serious stuff works really well; it's got some killer beats (see Liberation for a fine example) and André 3000 has one of the most instantly recognizable flows I've ever heard.

>Janko Nilovic - Rythmes contemporains
Imagine like a 1970s cop show TV theme song except instead of being like a minute long, it's a freaking 30 minute funk/fusion freakout played by a 46-man jazz band.

There's, like, sick bongos. The horns wail like nobody's business. There's a chanting choir that is all "DA DA! DA DA! DA DA!" like some Batman or James Bond theme song or something. Screaming guitar solos show up at random. And when this album really goes all out, it's lands on some of the biggest jazzy grooves I've heard on an album ever. I mean just holy wow.

Also nice drums.

Library music might be my new favorite genre. This stuff is seriously so damn enjoyable.

Is anyone here very familiar with anime? Is it worth getting into? I've enjoyed Castle in the Sky, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, found them all really comfy, especially the latter.

>Is it worth getting into?
It might be. Just as movies are worth getting into.
There is some good stuff, it's just all about swimming through a sea of names most of which may not be very interesting.

>What else would I like
Depends what you enjoyed in it. It's a dumb answer but still.
You can go take a look at the rest of Ghibli's stuff.
Then try to see what you liked in it and move from there. There are a lot of series or movies that are visually bonkers if that's what hooked you.
Other than that, maybe checking a series of each big genre might be good to see what you might want to dig deeper into.

Alexander Tucker - Furrowed Brow:

Just kind of boring and eh, devoid of purpose. The apathetic droning voices in Broken Dome were verging on comedic territory. This album is probably a lot better than I think but I'm not into it. Salty mood.

Everybody wil ltell you to go watch Gainax/Trigger stuff (Eva, Gurren Lagann, Kill La Kill, etc).
Don't.
It's almost half based on referencing other series, parodying them, etc.
That would be like telling someone who has never listened to rock to jump straight into Beefheart and Zappa. Sure you could take something away from that, but you'd be missing half of it.

Nice question. It depends. Being a 100% honest if you don't find 2D Girls attractive you will dislike >60% of anime. Also you kind of have to like the tropes and stuff. But, if you are getting into it, here is a helpful list
If you already watch film and shit, and want super serious and "deep" anime, watch:
>Ergo Proxy
>Paranoia Agent (one of my fave anime)
>Serial Experiments Lain
>Higurashi no Nako Koro ni (the VN is better)
>Angel's Egg (hahaha Oh wow. Lol)
If you want to relax and watch qt/funny stuff
>K-On!
>Love Live
>Azumanga Daioh
>Nichijou
>Inferno Cop
>Cromartie High (not qt but extremely hilarious)
>Nichibros
If you want a blend of The above watch any Shaft anime, maybe one of these
>Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
>Madoka
>Bakemonogatari (One of, if not, my favorite anime of all time)
If you want action (Hahaha Oh wow. lol)
>TTGL
>Space Cowboy
>FLCL
>Kill La Kill
Witht this, you have a list of anime that is essential to get into it. I don't incluye classics since they don't Really get you into anime, nothing wrong with them, just that they feel so different from modern/other anime that they even feel like a separated medium (Space Cowboy is an exception, same as Angel's Egg)

Also i forgot, i did listen to some albums of my chart.
>Dubmood - Lost Floppys Vol 1
I am surprised at how not-that-awful it turned out to be. Chiptune is almost always trash so i was expecting this to be so. It has some nice tunes and cool tracks (for a chiptune album) but overall it's bad
-4.5/10
>Astral Navigations - Lightyears Away
Boring 70's Psych rock. Painfully shallow and average. The songs here are everything but special. Better than the Chiptune album
>>65486403
Why?
>>65486460
When people name drop """"deep"""" anime they either say Lain or Paranoia Agent. IMHO PA is much better
