He was though. Kuti made boring, sloppy songs that were totally unfocused. He converted traditional African music into the Western pop format, which was somewhat innovative, but the craftsmanship was mediocre at best. People pretend to like him because of his political image; nobody actually enjoys sitting through an entire Fela Kuti album.
