They weren't really buttrock, but they weren't nearly as good as some of the other other "grunge" bands that came before them. Purple is a good record, and they have good songs in their discography, albeit with hit or miss albums as a whole. Scott Weilland's lyrics are something I can't really judge if they're good or not.
