Maybe Elliot Smith or Nick Drake. The refrain of Pink Moon would be compelling even cut to five seconds. But those are obvious next choices.
Maybe something from the Tim Kinsella crowd. That would be edgy given all the hate they get. The yelling about "unname everybody" from Anyone Can Have a Good Time or "I am over the counter productive culture" from If It Feels/ Good, Do It. He feels those things.
Or maybe "You're breathing free down on the floor" from Storm and Stress' Under Thunder and Fluorescent Lights. The melody on Williams' guitar cum cello is deep and surprising and catchy.
