Got a drummer friend looking to learn rock, so I'm building a playlist for him.

I've already got Led Zeppelin, Foo Fighters, and Bloc Party, but I'm having trouble finding other god tier drummers.

I'm not going for Rush. Neil Peart is overrated af to me.
>>
You're making a huge mistake not including Rush, Moving pictures has god tier drumming.

Alas, i recommend checking out Bill bruford, he's a jazz drummer, but king crimson (one of the bands he was in) is rock. check out Discipline

Journey has an amazing drummer OP

and put some Cream on that playlist

This, and MkI/MkII Deep Purple in general
>>
Neal Peart is shit and only understands how to overdo a drum track, not serve the song

Great tracks for him to study:
The Beatles - Rain
Can - Vitamin C
David Bowie - Breaking Glass
ALL of Ginger Baker's Air Force album

if you wanna put him through the wringer:
Captain Beefheart - Lick My Decals Off, Baby
anything Hella
anything Deerhoof
anything Lightning Bolt

Also all drummers need to listen to jazz like:
Art Blakey - Orgy in Rhythm AND Drum Suite
the Actuel released album "Africanasia"
Max Roach - We Insist! Freedom Now Suite
Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach - Money Jungle
Miles Davis - Live/Evil

You should remind him that every single great rock drummer has had some jazz influence
>>
Dead Kennedys - California Uber Alles
Journey - Wheel In The Sky
System of a Down - BYOB
Guns n Roses - Welcome to the jungle
Blink 182 - Dammit

just a few off the top of my head
>>
Van Halen could be good as well, stuff like Hot for teacher.

Any track with Dave Grohl.
I found his drumming on TCV's self-titled to be really, really good.
I also really dig the QOTSA albums he played on. But that's just my opinion.

>Journey has an amazing drummer OP
>Journey has had amazing drummers
fixed

cause they had both Aynsley Dunbar and Steve Smith

I would show him some Phil Collins before the drum machineā€¦ he could learn from the drum machine beats

Study Bill Ward, Ringo and Phil Rudd to show him you don't need to be all over the place to be a good drummer and you could develop your own style based on the way you count

Bill Stevenson and Jimmy Chamberlain are my favorite rock drummers with a lot to be learned from both

Deep purple is good so drumming. Others have said it, but Bill Bruford is a great drummer; So bands like Yes and King crimson would be good. Outside of Rock/Prog some absolutely solid as fuck drumming comes from motown and 70's soul music. If you wanna learn how to groove some MJ would be perfect, or James Brown. That'd be difficult, but the control would be extremely useful to learn.
Seriously though, I don't think you should discount Neil Peart, if you don't like Rush that is understandable. Yet it's crazy to deny that he's not a very talented drummer, 'Moving Pictures' is a very strong album.

>>65177146
If the music Rush made wasn't supposed to be that way, you'd be right.
>>
>>65177310
Coincidentally Neil Peart also does jazz
>>
Barriemore Barlow of Jethro Tull is extremely underrated.
>>
Good call with Bloc Party OP; Matt Tong's work on SIlent Alarm is fucking incredible.
>>
Elvin Jones man, gotta have the rhythm machine, I mean you just gotta have it
