What's your honest opinion on "jam bands"? Musical genuis, or a bunch of druggies who can't play their instruments?
Both :^)

Depends on the band. The Dead could really play, very well actually. If you haven't already, check out live/dead. Most definitely not just druggies who can't play their instruments.

neither
More the former. The Dead are awesome and seriously underrated on mu, at least
I don't like listening to them, but they are fun to see live
String Cheese Incident is one of the best bands I've ever seen

It's rare that I find a jam band I enjoy outside of Amon Duul II, Amon Duul "I", Ash Ra Tempel's early stuff, Guru Guru's early stuff, most of the big German rockers to be honest. And even then Amon Duul II live suck so much.

Still gotta check out them, thanks for the reminder.

I recommend starting with 5/08/77. Hailed as one of their best recordings ever.

because it definitely is. listen to jerrys extended solo on brown eyed women and that fucking dancin' in the street and tell me it isn't.
the dead were one of the goatest bands of all time and i don't even listen to them at all anymore. fuck modern day jam bands though, all trash.
Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers, Phish, and The Tedeschi Trucks band are goat-tier jam bands.
embryo's rocksession too

I think were lucky to find their niche.

The Dead were GOAT tier, as were ABB. Phish and Widespread Panic are pretty good and have some great moments.
It's true that they aren't always technically talented. The vocals can be especially bad. Trey really can't sing, JB is an incoherent mumble, and I prefer to pretend that Donna never existed.
I'm trying to decide whether it's worth $150 to see Phish when they're in town this summer. My city has a fuck-tiny venue, so they've been sold out since before I even knew they were on sale.
Even if you don't like them I think most jam bands are pretty proficient with their instruments.
I like a few of them. Phish, Umphrey's McGee, and Disco Biscuits especially. SiriusXM's jam band station is one of my favorites.
they're shit
half the fun of music is anticipating/knowing how a song goes, or having it stuck in your head

This is true.
Does anyone want to hear the story of how The Dead btfo the VU?

Not always. I've seen people who are really big fans of certain jam bands having really long discussions about the methods of entering and leaving improv sessions during songs, and apparently the Disco Biscuits have some thing specific to them where they'll mix up song transitions and that's a large topic of discussion of fans of that band too. You're applying stuff about music you listen to to music it doesn't fit and that has its own things.

Phish is pretty good though.
