Bob Dylan- The Times They Are A-Changing
wow this is weirdly comfy for how depressing it is
Bob riffing on the blues a bit, with songs like Ballad of Hollis Brown are great, but the protest folk stuff doesn't impress me much

3.5

Bobby D- Nashville Skyline
This is like Bizarro Dylan, short and simple, no complex and surreal lyrics, weirdly normal voice, it's country. This shouldn't be happening and it shouldn't be as good as it is. Despite being really basic romance country, it works, weirdly well. Still falls flat in some spots, but it's only 26 minutes, so it's nice and short and sweet and I like it.

Running multiple stellar acts in 43 years isn't too shabby, I'd say. Not to mention basically being the foundation of Soviet punk and inspiring countless artists. That's more than most people get to do in double that time. Still sucks that he died young, though.

Fish's /daily/ batch of non-reviews. From best to worst:

>The Sonics - Here Are The Sonics!!!
How is it a proto-punk band can kick so much more ass than like 90% of any band ever? Don't listen to the bonus tracks version because they are total lame-sauce. Good fucking shit.

>Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus
Actually picked this up at a record show today. Shit's tight. Was in a good mood throughout this whole thing. Nice drums.

>Sleep - Jerusalem
This one goes BWOOOOOOOOOOO way better than Dopesmoker imo. Didn't do on weed though so maybe it'll be even better if/when I do?

>The Sisters of Mercy - Floodland
Changed score because I liked it more on 2nd listen. I might do that so be aware. 80s as fuck and I felt like it should've made me very depressed, when I was only kinda depressed.

>Slowdive - Just for a Day
Dreamy and mellow, but uneventful and kinda boring.

>The Shins - Oh, Inverted World
It's indie rock. A bit more detailed and thought out than your average indie record, but not by a whole lot.

>Tool - Lateralus
Came into this expecting to hate it, when I really didn't. Had a lot of kick-ass moments that were drowned out by some cringe-y ones. I liked the detail and production on a lot of these tracks, especially the s/t one.

>The Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight
Should've liked this. All the elements were there:
>Post Punk
>Jangle Pop
>Neo-Psych
and most importantly
>Scaruffi approved
But the songwriting was just so bland. May give a few more tries but left a bad taste in my mouth.

>Beck! - Odelay
Alt-country moments were actually pretty good. Sample-work on the hip-hop tracks were nice, but the production made me want to...uh...stop......listening...to...it......... :/

>Popol Vuh - In den Gärten Pharaos
Note to self: stop trying tribal ambient, you do not like it.

>Pearl Jam - Ten
It'd be 10/10 if we were measuring by how bad it was lmao. Honestly don't know why I have this on my chart.

>Beck - Morning Phase
Worst thing I've heard all year.
>>
>>65097381
Note how I fucked up Night on Earth so it's Paint'd over bad.

Also in the Sonics review I meant "90% of any punk band ever" but I think you get the jist. Exclamation marks well deserved.

>>65097640

>>65097679

>>65097714
I'll backlog it, but idk I've liked nothing by him yet

>>65097726
ikr? One of my teachers last semester wouldn't shut the fuck up about them so I thought I'd at least try them out.

>>65095622
Just heard cuz I missed it earlier and was unfortunately listening to Beck. Shits mixing is tight and it transitions very well maybe minus the guitar solo-y part in the background around the 3 minute mark, but I didn't really mind it at all. Subtle and shit, good shit.

>>65097755
didn't forget dubs tho
>>
>>65097755
I liked your album btw!

I'll agree to an extent that it is a bit aimless and not refined, a lot of stuff could go.
But hey that's how experimental music usually goes, not everything sticks. I think you got some choice cuts on here though.
first two tracks are especially good.

>>65097796
thanks for listening my man. I might bring the fuzz towards the end further into the background. Also doesn't really have a good ending....and it could use some lyrics I feel but I can't write or sing sooooo.

The Time - What Time is It?

*sniff sniff* What is that smell? Oh my, it's old cheese! Hold on, it's not just any kind of old cheese. It's cheese from the 80s! That's right, this album is filled with momentarily fun 80s cheese. Now don't get me wrong, cheese can be enjoyable. I am in fact an appreciator of the fun times you can get out of cheesy music but did not appreciate it for too long. It is entertaining at first and adds to the appeal of the album but soon gets stale and boring over time. It's a good thing the songwriting here was decent and funky, otherwise this album would've been pretty mediocre. 3/5.

More japanese fusion jazz.
2 down, 61 to go.
(and although the band seems to have find it's hold full of cheese and needless technicality, some of it shines through, for instance in the evermoving groove of a track like Asayake or the welking, running and leaping of Olion)

I just called OCCII about Alan Licht, which is this friday. The woman couldn't tell me anything about a planning, because it's just people who use the venue, it isn't organized by the venue itself. She predicted it'd be finished by 12 but I think we had to leave around 23:10 last time? They have a permit for live music till 1:00, so basically be could miss everything.
She said that the organizers would be there friday from 17:00 but that seems a bit late to make a decision on whether to go.
Your call I guess, I don't really want to go on my own and I have another thing I could go to (tho not as exciting).

From my experience, the ones I can remember that I like are Dogwander, Vinter, Terminus, Misha, fish and SDC. Also Jangle&Bojangle because he's me.

I don't really like Jeff Mangum died for your sins or whatever because he gets too angry.
>>
>>65103875
i mean, of the albums you listened to at least 8 of them could be considered some kind of punk, maybe even a couple more.
hardcore punk is not something i listen to a lot at home, but i still like it a lot, and i enjoy playing it.
I listen to a lot of melodic punky stuff, though, even if a lot of it doesn't fall under the "pop-punk" umbrella. Also i don't really see Big Mess as a straight up pop punk band anyways.

I played OCCII once with Brudte Lofter, pretty nice place.

Yeah I guess that's true.

>Also i don't really see Big Mess as a straight up pop punk band anyways.
This is true too.

>I played OCCII once with Brudte Lofter, pretty nice place.
Cool! I saw Peter Brotzmann there with Terminus, it was fun. They never have timetables though, which is fucked up because we don't know whether we can see Alan Licht before we have to leave for the train :/
>>
>>65103492
Best: Mark, Fish, Kaden (Not daily though) JANGLE
Least Favorite: Terminus Co and Hampus Because they are bullies, Comet Because he is slow
Best Taste: Would say Jangle but he disliked Negativland so i guess it's Fish
Interesting taste: GFR, Letov, Hampus
>>
>>65104058
that's pretty typical of more underground/punk venues in my experience
the local punk venue in copenhagen usually only put up timetables on the night of the show, and never online.
Don't dutch trains go all night though?
>>
>>65104104
yeah I can see why they do it, but it can be annoying.
The train we need to take doesn't, some do. Well it does, but it would take 3+ hours after 12, while it takes 1h40m normally, so that's not really an option.

I started this with seven seas by Avishai Cohen, one of my favorite modern players. I like how he incorporates vocals on this record and does so maintaining his own sound. However, there's also a few compositions in here which sound somewhat like generic versions of his general style of music and kinda unremarkable.
I liked it.

welp, I expected more from this. it's 3 album tracks, the (far inferior but kind of interesting) radio cut of After the Flood and some B-sides.
I mostly checked this out hoping it'd contain some alternate versions, since there's supposedly hours upon hours of discarded improv from the Laughing Stock sessions but alas, there's very little new here.
The alt version of After the Flood gets a lot less time to breathe and is more densely layered than the original but it loses a lot of the hypnotic, religious feel of the original to its attempt to be bold.
Stump is an uneventful krautrock track and 5:09 is a sample collage, thrown together from the original album's instrumentals.
Piano is a pleasant but uneventful piano piece by Hollis, but its 14 minute runtime and long stretches of silence make it a chore to listen to once its prettiness starts to wear thin.
i'm just glad they picked the tracks they picked for the album, because these B-sides are just weak to be honest family.

it just makes me think the one who pulls the meme (or me) is missing the point, more than anything

it addresses the artists' ~supposed~ motivation more than anything else which is just something i would like to avoid as much as possible in general

Ornette Coleman did something completely new with Free Jazz
Freddie Hubbard and Ilhan Mimaroglu brilliantly combined tape music with avant-garde jazz
Schoenberg thought up a completely new thing with his 12-tone technique.
The Residents just seem to do weird stuff for the sake of it. Explain their weird happy birthday cover on Duck Stab for me, it isn't something new, it's just weird.

>Massimo Toniutti - Il Museo Selvatico
>dark ambient, Musique Concrète

A curious body of work that involves discovered sounds that were recorded around a mountain retreat. The music is very subtle and mysterious with a sense of mysticism. Though it does have a dark edge the album vibe is sort of pretty and rather comfy. Like being stuck in cozy cabin in the center of spirit haunted woods.

>Men Behind the Sun - Blade Meditations
>noise

A Rather short and underwhelming noise experience. Though I should point out that I did really like the track "The Garden of Forking Paths", it was High powered and intense track that really makes you want the thrash something. I just kind of wished the other tracks brought that kind of intensity.

:(
>>
>>65105206
Because there is creativity in making something that would be perceived by many as abrasive, crude, and garbage, but yet still putting in the effort to craft the music to exactly how you want it to sound.

It's difficult to explain why but (imo) it's essentially the same reason dadaist art appeals to people.
It's a mockery of what the general public finds beautiful or good, but there's obviously effort in the art, cohesiveness, an artistic spark that can be recognized.
Which is what differentiates it from just something being accidentally bad.

that probably didn't make any sense.

how so? They thought up new techniques and combined existing stuff to further music.
Adding weirdness to the album to seem experimental is what I mean with 'experimental for the sake of it', so that's exactly what I said about the Residents? I'm not trying to diss the Residents here or anything, I legitimately don't get why people would like them and am looking for an explanation, while you just like the idea of proving me wrong.

A lot of those Zappa claims, some more obviously than others, should be prefaced with "in the context of rock music"

With that in mind, I think every one of those claims is factual.

>best /daily/ thread in a while imo
Eh, I'm not a huge fan when everyone just starts talking about everyone else. It's just gross narcissism. I'd rather talk about music than other trips.

You managed to trigger me. Con fucking grats. Listen up you dipshit, Mayoi is nowhere near being the worst Girl. I'm talking objectively here. There is absolutely and i say ABSOLUTELY no way that one of The most developed, well Made, and thoughtfully designed girls in the whole series could be the worst girl. Fucking snake on the other hand is some next fucking level trash, like Math bitch. Snail had an azong attitude, a really traguc backstory, and an interesting personality. If you ever talk shit about her then i'm guessing you never even watched the anime you twat, or just weren't paying attention, like the braindead retard you are. Second of all, you fucking missed the whole point of Nise. Yes the sisters thing wasn't necesary but Nise wasn't entirely about them, but about MAKING SHINOBU and ARARAGI TALK TO EACH OTHER AGAIN. Not only that but IT SOLIDIFIED ARARAGI X SENJOUGAHARA. Also, i don't love Snail Because i'm a lolifag, as i can appreciate many types of Girls, but it was the deep carácter She has, and her beautiful aesthetics even an ass man like me could appreciate. I think that the trilogy has their most readily listenable material, but Elverum definitely got better with textures after Mount Eerie, Sauna is gorgeous and so is Dawn
which is not to imply that the latter albums are better than the former, although I'd have to say they approach it
It's also fucking hard to play some of the songs he plays on the guitar so I have massive respect for his ability
also he strikes me as incredibly genuine in this innocent way, and that's an incredibly rare thing to find in today's music environment

"Use the studio as an instrument" has a much disputed claim for primacy, but I was under the impression the prize goes to Phil Spector on that one.

As far as parody goes, the idea has existed since the Greeks and there are about 30-40 years of recorded popular music history before Frank Zappa ever released a record, so I'd be very surprised if he was the first to parody on record. However, I truthfully do not know who came before.

(According to wikipedia, Bach's Christmas Oratorio could be considered a parody, since it reworked music from his cantatas. More recently, they cite a 1955 musical number about rock and roll by Fred Astaire as an example of early modern parody.)
