Sad.
She was my best friend
My best friend died a month ago and Sleep Cycle by Deakin really helped me. The lyrics are gentle and he gives some good advice in them. It sounds like that's not what you want from your post but it really helped me
Starting with obvious ones
>bon iver- for emma forever ago
>raid yo head, man
>crack the skye- mastodon (the title track at least)
Take care friend

This. Sleep Cycle is fucking beautiful.
Thanks for the suggestions so far guys, it really means a lot

Joanna Newsom - Ys if you can enjoy her voice
Yo La Tengo - Painful
Carissa's Wierd - Songs About Leaving
Sorry about your sister, man.

Chin up mate
Fast Car - Tracy Chapman
you're retarded

If you want a little bit of escapism something with like the Hamilton recording could help. You'd still find it cathartic because there is a part where Hamilton's son dies but you could lose yourself in the story too.

Have a Nice Life - Deathconciousness
Read the book that goes along with it.

This is also a good rec.

Seconding Astral Weeks. Listened to this while driving in the car with my dad after our dog died, he was the one who inteoduced me to Van Morrison.
>>65086391
Also I just want to say props to you for having the guts to ask /mu/ for music right now. When my friend died I thought about posting something similar but I knew I wouldn't be able to handle the trolls
I just wanted to say I'm sorry for your loss. I always listen to pic related when I feel hopelessly unhappy. Hang in there OP.
>family member dies
>better tell /mu/!

If you want to immerse yourself in noise in order to achieve catharse, try out Galactic Tornado by KK Null, Dead Rails by Air Conditioning and loveliescrushing by Bloweyelashwish. Sorry for your loss OP.
Belle and Sebastian helped me through cancer, not sure if that's what you're looking for
wait a sec, is really a good idea listening depressed albums when something bad happens?

Ever tried listening to happy music when you are crushingly, hopelessly depressed? It's fucking horrible and infuriating
>>65086905
>what is catharsis
people react differently to different situations, personally I can't imagine forcing myself to listen to upbeat music would do anything but worsen the situation
>>65086905
Yes. Sometimes you just need to dwell in your current mood for a while. I would never want to listen to happy, uplifting shit after a death like that. It's worse if you pretend that nothing happen and try to cheer yourself right away.

I can confirm this.
op I think this will really help you

It can be really cathartic to listen to something sad and have an extreme moment of sadness. It's almost like popping a pimple in relieving the pressure. Also, some people want to be sad for a little bit to mourn and honor their loved one. Really, everyone grieves differently. For me Sleep Cycle was perfect because it got me out and doing stuff again and Deakin's personal lyrics helped me feel like I had someone to talk to even though I didn't
Laughing Stock / Spirit of Eden by Talk Talk
both are beautiful

damn
I'm really sorry about your sister OP. That's such a senseless terrible way to lose somebody you've known all your life. Sometimes when I'm sad, I like to listen to music from video games I used to play when I was younger
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHFBO-ASaE8
Music that my mom used to play in the car when I was young usually does it for me. Play old songs from your childhood, it's really a strange, cathartic feeling for all the memories to rush back

Mellon Collie, Zen Arcade or Epicus Doomicus Metallicus.
