Have you listened to his rnb/jazz stuff from the new album, Find your wings, 2seater (specifically 4:40 onward), Okaga CA has a really cool use of samples that are choppy, and just pile on each other and layer into a really pretty song. Im sure your familiar with the more pop appeal RnB of fucking young. Its not perfect, but overall the project shows so much unused potential and growing room.

I think in order for him to really maximize on his sound he's gotta of course keep doing what he's doing but also take influence from his really atmospheric stuff like She and Fish, like I'm not saying he should go back to being an edgelord but with those two songs he was really onto something. He's been making slow progression with his sound. Basically just incorporating more synthesizer but it's something. He hasn't really dropped the ball as far as his songwriting goes though.
I'd say 2 and Salad Days were on the same level but I give the edge to Salad Days because of Chamber of Reflection.
Last years release did kind of show he hadn't progressed much but it was still good and I think that's why he made it just a "mini album". But if he doesn't do something kind of new and interesting next time around I might start losing interest.

From my observations over time it seems that Mac Demarco doesn't overly concern himself about anything other then getting tracks done. He will use software, hardware, do his own sampling, whatever works. He also doesn't obsess on the tech or pseudo intellectual tech babble when enjoying his toys or the micro details of his song writing.
Often he gets lumped with other artists in the lazy stoner rock realm, but if one takes the time to objectively listen to his collection it becomes obvious that the guy is simply doing his own thing and has a distinct sound which he cultivated over a significant amount of time. His studio and live setups reflect that which he enjoys, making music and playing with tech. He is fortunate to be that successful doing something he clearly enjoys.
