It's really off-putting when you ask for albums to listen to and you get the equivalent of another country's dad rock, mainstream pop, etc, for recs on other countries.

I agree with this. I'm sure there are acts in other countries that are putting out amazing stuff...but unless one were to do something like say, search by country on Bandcamp, one would only be referred to the super mainstream stuff.
