Their reviews are not "paid off". They have a certain obligation to rate favourably to certain artists who have large, vocal fanbases or who they cover a lot and will probably have to interview in the near future, and every time they give a low score to a high profile release it's a big deal because they're risking a lot of flak from bands, advertisers, fans, readers. It's the fucking opposite of what you think, giving a high score isn't a big deal most of the time, it just gets shrugged off. Giving a low score is playing with fire unless they're a band nobody cares about.
