There's no way Danse Manatee is bad on the same level as Centipede Hz and Painting With. Sure, it's the weakest of their 2000-2010 output, but it has a natural, inspired, and authentic quality that both those others lack. It was an attempt to translate their creative awakening that had occurred the previous summer into a record, and even if it feels kind of undeveloped, it has a playful, inspired, and free quality that those other two records don't have. Centipede Hz is them desperately wanting to believe that they were capable of more than they actually were, and Painting With is just the sound of defeat.

Probably because following Sung Tongs, Panda's had a much more extensive role in the music.
The drumming in Feels (severely underrated) is as extensive in forming the sound of the album as Deak's guitar playing. Strawberry Jam similarly benefits from Panda's percussion, and specifically reaps some of its sound from Person Pitch (esp. Derek).
There's no question Panda's the biggest influence on MPP, though people underestimate how involved Avey and Geo were in the album, the latter especially.
Panda has stated he was very drained during Centipede Hz; while New Town Burnout is a fantastic song, it's somewhat pulling from Tomboy instead of being collaborative, and Rosie Oh was clearly phoning it in (though still a decent song).

Honestly, I really don't know why it didn't become seen as one of the greatest albums of all time. I think it's a flawless album and deserves to be seen as the Animal Collective's highest achievement, but for whatever reason, it just didn't get recognized for what it is.

You know I was thinking about something with Centipede Hz. Unrelated. There are 2 distinct mixes out there. There is one with Moonjock featuring the "this is the new centipede" sample and count in, but there is also a rip of the stream that does not have that intro. I've seen both on torrents and soulseek. I wonder if some of the people who ostensibly hate Centipede Hz have only heard the shitty web rip and never bothered to listen again. The web rip (non-vocal intro to Moonjock) sounds so horrible, it is clearly an earlier mix that was not meant to represent the album.
Anyway idk Animal Collective is cool.

Feels. I think it's easily the highest point in neo psychedelia; Four men at the end of their youth having reached this creative and emotional plateau, blending elements of impressionism with pop. The end result is absolutely phenomenal, one of the most beautifully compost albums to be recorded in my opinion. They're both amazing albums, but Here Comes the Indian was dark and paranoid, while Feels is mesmerizing and tranquil.
