Completely different class of product. Sansa Clips are cheap plastic players for running, iPods were (supposedly) premium players. I think a Cowon player would be the nearest analogue.
At this point there's no advantage to using a dedicated MP3 player over a smartphone unless you're willing to spend enough for a hi-fi player. If you need something small and lightweight to use while exercising that's the only context a Clip would make sense.

To be fair, listening to music does drain battery life. Which can actually be a problem if you have a phone with shit battery life (of which there are many) or don't have the option of charging your phone mid-day.

I fucking hate smartphones and I'm planning on going back to a flip phone as soon as my contract expires. Mine doesn't have an SD slot anyway not I would play my music from it even if it did. Well the thing about Android is that you can get a fairly cheap and slim DAC for not very much if it really sounds that bad, or just get a phone that doesn't sound like shit. But the best Creative and SanDisk players are not in production any more so getting one now you'd be paying may more than is reasonable.

I don't see the problem with that, it could be an important call. But you can always turn notifications off while listening. Even iPhones have do not disturb mode, and on android you can get players that customize how you deal with notifications while listening.
