8/10 has some weak/filler tracks.

pic related is their real masterpiece
>>
>>64752376
AHM suite is all filler, and Alan's Psychedelic breakfast was just kind of okay. As a result, three fourths of the album is just kind of okay. The other three songs are really good, though.

As for meddle, it's my personal favorite floyd album. Echoes can't be beat.
>>
>>64752376
I never got why /mu/ loved that album so much. It's got some good tracks but it's not Floyd's best by a long shot.

I guess /mu/ can't like popular artists without glorying their worst releases, I bet you fags think the studio version of Ummagumma is top tier too.
>>
>>64752814
What's wrong with Ummagumma? It's a band searching what music they want to do after the departure of Syd. I think it's a really amazing album
True Pink Floyd fans enjoy Ummagumma.
>>
>>64752898
>No True Scotsman
>>
>>64752898
I liked Ummagumma, but the live side is way, way better than the studio tracks.
>>
>>64752776
>AHM suite is all filler
I urge you to try it again
>Alan's Psychedelic breakfast was just kind of okay
although I disagree, I empathize with this point of view because I do see where you're coming from.
>Echoes can't be beat.
It's one of PF's 10/10 tracks
>>64752814
I actually am not kidding, I think Piper is "good", and the studio side of Ummagumma is an amateurish, unlistenable mess. I also think Floyd were at their best 73-79
>>
Echoes is Pink Floyd's best song.
>>
The thing I can't understand about post-Syd pre-DSOTM Floyd: They thought Vegetable Man and Scream thy Last Scream were to weird to release and evidence of Syd's demise, but then they put out stuff like Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast and Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict. What the fucks with that? Syd's solo albums are both better and more normal than what they were doing at the same time.
>>
>>64752376
You're a fuckin' idiot. A bunch of half baked ideas all pulled together rather poorly under the auspices of Ron Geesin.
Talk about filler.

Fat Old Sun is a good track though.
>>
Just listened to Echoes. Definitely one of the best songs ever made IMO
>>
>>64753067
Dude I also just listened to it for the first time this morning
>>
>>64753049
>a bunch of half baked ideas
"no"
>>
>>64753043
After Syd left they didn't really know what they were doing. AHM was when they started refocusing instead of trying to continue their sound they had with Syd. It's why the studio side of Ummagumma sounds like a mess and why AHM felt very experimental compared to some of their stuff with Syd.

That said, Meddle is still a personal 10/10 for me.
>>
>>64753043
the difference between Syd and the rest of the band is that Syd can actually write good psychedelic/experimental songs, where as the rest are better at writting prog tracks. See how they kinda fell down a little with ASoS and Ummagumma when Syd left them (not saying that they're bad or anything)
>>
>>64752946
I don't make a distincton, when i talk about Ummagumma i'm talking about both discs.

Anyway regarding Pink Floyd this is how i rank their albums:

Piper 8/10
Saucerful 7/10
More 5/10
Ummagumma 9/10
AHM 8/10
Meddle 10/10
Obscured 6/10
DSOTM 8/10
WYWH 8/10
Animals 10/10
The Wall 7/10
TFC 5/10
MLOR 3/10
Division Bell 4/10
Endless River 2/10

Yes it's one of my favorite bands, so obviously i'm biased.
>>
>>64753197
>I don't make a distincton
So you don't notice it at all when the great live recordings are replaced by some amateurs trying to sound like Floyd?
>>
Meddle and Atom Heart Mother are their best albums. They both show a good balance of exploration and ambition without turning pompous like they did later on.

As for which one is better, I'd go with Meddle. The songs are more modest than in AHM, but Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast always felt a bit off to me. And Echoes is my absolutely favorite Pink Floyd track ever.
>>
>>64753197
Piper 8/10
Saucerful 7/10
More 8/10 (personal reasons)
Ummagumma 5/10
Atom Heart Mother 10/10
Meddle 8/10
Obscured 7/10
Dark Side 9/10
WYWH 9/10
Animals 9/10
The Wall 7/10
TFC 6/10
AMLoR 4/10
Division Bell 7/10
Endless River 3/10

They are my favorite band - so definitely biased.
>>
>>64753162
I understand all of that. What I don't get is why they didn't release Vegetable Man and Scream thy Last Scream if the ummagumma AHM was considered publishable. Heck, why haven't they STILL released them.
>>
You have no idea how glad I am that we've had a Pink Floyd thread that hasn't resorted to people (badly) citing Scaruffi and talking about how good Piper is.

The Wall gets disproportionate hate.

It's not even that bad if you think of it as a separate rock opera/concept thing. It's actually got some extremely good pop songs.
>>
>>64753503
It builds tension before Gilmour's guitar bursts through towards the 18 minute mark. Kinda like the noodling on Starless by KC before the melody comes back at the end.

The Wall gets hate here for a couple reasons.
>It's popular

People which don't enjoy the Wall too much: Watch the film.

I didn't enjoy the Wall that much and i still think it has some fillers in there. It's nice to listen to from time to time, but far from their best.
>>
>>64755024
it's still incredibly boring for Pink Floyd's standards. It's overly long, has a weak concept that isn't actually that deep or meaningful if you spend more than 10 seconds thinking about, and at least half of the songs are completely disposable musically.

Still, it's not a bad album, it has a few great songs and is very ambitioius. 6/10 is about right. A 7 would also be reasonable.

Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd are two completely different things, but I've found that if you're a fan of one, you're often not a fan of the other. I think it's a result of them being associated the way they are. It's like if Tiny Tim led Swans on their first album.

not him but I disagree. When I hear Syd's albums I get sad because of the absence of the joy and light in his voice which was very apparent in Piper. If I get sad listening to Roger's stuff, it's because he's really good at conveying his feelings and plans for the listener to feel sad. Same with Richard Wright's "Broken China," which I find is probably the best of all the members' solo albums.

Syd age 24

On a distant shore, miles from land
Stands the ebony totem in ebony sand
A dream in a mist of grey...
On a far distant shore...

The pebble that stood alone
And driftwood lies half buried
Warm shallow waters sweep shells
So the cockles shine...

A bare winding carcase, stark
Shimmers as flies scoop up meat, an empty way...
Dry tears...
Crisp flax squeaks tall reeds
Make a circle of grey in a summer way, around man
Stood on ground...

Roger age 36

Daddy's flown across the ocean
Leaving just a memory
Snapshot in the family album
Daddy what else did you leave for me?
Daddy, what'd'ja leave behind for me?!?
All in all it was just a brick in the wall.
All in all it was all just bricks in the wall.

"You! Yes, you! Stand still laddy!"

Come on. What a poor argument

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say

"Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves in labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide

And everything is green and submarine

And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the wheres or whys
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb towards the light"
