Thom Yorke is right when he says Spotify is not good for artists, especially new artists, but I as a really poor student am really thankful for it. It is there for discovery. I use it to create huge playlists for me and my friends to discover.
If you want the album and you cannot afford it, then you download it illegally, before you can buy it legally. I think that is morally ok.
Problem is, that is not what most non-music lovers do. And as they are the vast majority, Thom is correct. I always feel a little bad for downloading stuff illegally.
A while ago, when iI was 16, I got caught torrenting an album (first time ever even) , next day I even bought the album's special edition. What does SONY and Depeche Mode and their slave lawyers do? "PAY 600€ ANON, OH AND 600€ FOR THE LAWYER" Delta Machine was a SHIT album. I should have never bought it.
And that didn't only make me use filesharing sites forever; nah, I have learned to hate corporations and greedy artists even more. It made me realize "WHO CARES". Now I don't think twice but thrice before purchasing an album. "Depeche Mode? Hm, this album is meh.. I might bu.... NAH THEY'RE GREEDY ASSSHOLES WHO DON'T PROTECT THEIR LISTENERS FROM SONY OR WHATEVER BYE"
