drums could be more present in the track, i think they got kinda buried in this current mixing. the intro is kinda strange and not welcoming but once it starts it is pretty nice. i like the synth or what ever that is. some sub bass just to round up the track and fill in the low end would be cool, but i dont know if that was your intention. overall 7/10 has potential.

go into massive

set the pitch to -64

the sound you get is a farting noise.

if a square wave oscillator would only go to about 10 hz you wouldnt even be able to make melodies with it.
hence, it stinks...

you could use it as an lfo, though.

wow you are so deluded, this is fucking terrible, what about this makes you think it can contend with the thousands of excellent albums by producers that barely have a career or unknowns? Do you have any fucking shame? Putting out a album with this trash? You really think you can build a career out of this? The only good thing about this song is that there aren't any notable mixing mistakes. That's literally it.

me i'm pic related. I'm the shit. I DJ the world over from Albany to Syracuse and if you think that I would ever waste a morsel of my time with that vibe-killer, then you have another thing coming. I have collaborated with them all, from Richard (oh, you mean Aphex Twin) to Sonny (oh, you mean Skrillex) to Stephen (oh, you mean Black Adults Swim Man), and, ho ho, it would be a grave offense to the world of music if you were to deign to even glance at the ground they walked on the Tuesday before last.

I found one ty for the rec
>>
>>64703519

I think it's the title, along with the lullaby vibe the tune has, is making me think of some kind of, well...

I was originally thinking "maternity ward" sounds (far too sappy on its own, that idea) but then I got to thinking just sounds in general that would be common to most people at one stage of their lives, going from maternity ward to some kind of terminal care ward at the end - just little things, footsteps, babies crying, school sounds, factory or office sounds, then life support machines - anything that says "we were born at the start of this, lived our lives while it played, and we died at the end".

Subtle stuff, not too loud or too obvious that would take away from (or change the vibe of) the tune itself, but things that would, on repeated listening, start to form a picture.
>>
>>64704412
I like the idea you've got of adding ambient background noise to it. It's sparse enough to do so.
The actual theme of the tune for me though is the departure of the nephilim from the earth after the great battle.
So fuck knows what ambient background noises would fit with that.
>>
>>64704525
>the departure of the nephilim from the earth after the great battle

And if we get a little closer, here amongst the normal flora and fauna of the imageboard we see someone who is obviously a new inhabitant, fresh to the heady ecosystem that makes up anonymous posting. He is under the idea that after he has been severely blown the fuck out, that it was only ever one poster who disagreed with him. On the contrary, numerous posters were united in the opinion that here surely was a complete idiot.
A passing straggler has called him a fool and he has failed to see this as what it is, simply one more voice in the ever growing chorus.
Maybe in a few months, he can hope to fit in. His best bet if he wants to do that, is to stay as quiet as possible, until he really knows the lay of the land. It's doubtful this will happen though.

Is anyone here genuinely trying to "make it big"? How many of you are just hobbyists and how many are hoping they could eventually become (or currently are) professional producers?

I'm the opposite. Don't care about money at all (I have a dayjob), but would like to have a lot of fans some day. I doubt I ever will, but I think it's worth striving for. It helps that I can release all of my songs at no charge.

>>64709073
I thought that I could make it big years ago. Now, I realize how much it takes to get ahead. I just have fun doing it as a hobby, and that's fine for me. When people check out my stuff and enjoy it, even if it's one person on a track I've been piecing together for months, I feel good about it

How do you guys de-cheese your music if it's getting too bad? I'm currently working on a synth track, and it's all virtual instruments right now. I'm planning on working on different timbres, filters and the like. What approaches do you take if you like what you're working on, but it sounds like cheese?

You need:
- Musical talent, though this is not a strict requirement
- A style that resonates with a particular demographic
- Networking connections to get you airplay and to get people talking about your work
- The ability to play live shows well
- Foresight to not make stupid decisions that will hurt you for as long as you have to stick with them (for example, a local artist's name is KPT, but you're supposed to pronounce it "kept", not "kay pee tee". You wouldn't know that since you only ever read the name and never hear it unless you talk to the musician himself and he'll annoyingly correct you)
- Money (whether it's yours or someone else's doesn't matter though)
- Cool marketing gimmicks

Among whatever else I'm missing

Bit of a long shot you're still checking this.

Theres a brushed snare loop, a jazz break, a cajon loop, a snapshot of a djembe loop and a few other oneshot hits sprinkled about to add some more shuffle.

All of these except the brushed snare are fed into a sidechain bus, and then the bus and the brushed snare are pushed quite hard through a tape emulation plugin (satin).

I'm assuming simpler is an ableton plugin? I'm using reaper so it's just the stock sampler reasamplomatic. There's no real magic to the intro synth, it's one single sample I grabbed from the 30gb pack of unlabelled tapes that was floating around a while back

making it big would be amazing, but only because it would mean not having to actually work, because let's face it, since we all like writing music and producing our tracks, this isn't actually hard work. and if i was 'big' i could probably have a lot of time to write music, which is what i fear will be missing from my future. but am i genuinely TRYING to make it big, not really, i am trying to make music that impresses me, but i'm only halfass doing that these days.

How to keep a simple driving kick/hat/snare pattern from getting annoying?
I don't wanna add fills or hide it in a clutter of other percs. If subtle automation is key, well I have no idea what to automate.
LP and plain volume reduction have been the most helpful, but I don't really wanna gimp the hihats too hard. Maybe if I find some good round robin hats that'll work, but I dunno.
>>
>>64716970
go really heavy on varied screaming synths like italo disco style
panning might help
i don't see why you're opposed to percussion so much add some rims, cowbells, tambourine sounds clicks whatever don't clutter just a slight pinch here and there

>>
>>64717023
Oh, I usually do have more, but this track's more dramatic than usual and I think the stark drums work nicely. And anyway, I run into this issue occasionally and I'm on the lookout for new solutions. I mean, considering how much praise analog drum machines get for the subtle variations, I figured there's be a lot of tricks to emulate that.
Incidentally, any Italo disco recs?
>>64717157
Yeah, I'm thinking of making a big shift later in the track since I've been lazy with song structures lately.
And now that my ears are rested, I think I could find some nicer hat samples anyway.

Thanks, guys.
>>
>>64717254
I'm enjoying it. I think some automation on the lead would help, though. The sound gets a bit samey.

>>64717254
I think the LP fade-in could be a lot better. More resonance, maybe? I dunno, it just sounds all sterile and digital to me. Overall drums could probably use some more grit. For instance, I'd consider adding subtle distortion, but turning the drive up during the fade-in. Dunno, just an idea.
I dig the instrumentation, though. Overall quite cool.
Feeling alright, concerned about antibiotic immunity setting on within my lifetime.

I'd advise you to split the bass snare and hihats onto different channels and EQ/mix them seperately.

that's a good next step

your track has such a weird timbre, interesting pallet of sounds. i don't think it's that annoying but it's pretty repetitive. if you don't want to change up the kit then change it rhythmically or maybe switch into 5/4 or 2/4
>>
>>64718287

Thanks for the feedback. How would you suggest on making the track more interesting?
>>
>>64717906
Nice chilled tune.
I'd slap a little verb on the synth personally, see what it sounds like. There's a point where you have the cutoff turned all the way up, and it just sounds a little flat. When it's turned down though the mix suits that synth.

>>
>>64718595
Yeah piano is kinda a preference thing. Though i could try tightening it up a little and adding some cleaner samples over it.
What should i do to make it less cluttered?
Just remove some instruments or lower them in the mix so there are some melodies that stick out?
>>
>>64718626
>What should i do to make it less cluttered?
>Just remove some instruments or lower them in the mix so there are some melodies that stick out?
I find it's best to start with at least ripping them out and seeing how it sounds. You'd be amazed what turns up if you've got a long line of loops and you play with which ones to mute or not. You;ll find a combo you didn't even know was there, I've ended up making new parts to the songs sometimes that way.
>>64718587
This is really nice and relaxing.
>>
>>64718343
apply heavy compression to each individual drum sample, then set the wet/dry on each of those compressors to 50%.
Then apply a subtle compression at 100% wet/dry to the entire drum kit.

instant crisp and full sounding drums
>>
>>64718703
Thanks it's in major demo mode honestly. I'm probably gonna remove the enter rhythm section which is a sample. I can find something better or make my own
>>
>>64718703
This is very true. The mute button is one of the most useful tools.
>>
>>64718746
>I'm probably gonna remove the enter rhythm section which is a sample. I can find something better or make my own
Yeah, always go with your own beat.
If nothing else, and the sound is eluding you, sample a beat you like that is mixed well then strip out individual parts of it to make your own kit, then make a beat with that.
>>
>>64718787
I don't mind sampling entire rhythm sections. A lot of them sound just fine. Esp on older jazz records. Just gotta add compression and cut off some frequencies.

I'll look through my collection before I go into make my own cause I usually make very electronic glitchy sounding rhythms I want a more natural sounding drum and snare here

Can someone explain the advantages (if any) of doubling the tempo speed but recording at a half time?

Noticed this alot with hip hop/trap/dubstep producers... e.g. the project tempo is set to 150bpm, but the drum beat/etc is actually playing at 75bpm

for the parallel (50% wet/dry) brick wall it. High Ratio, low threshold. Attack/Release might take some adjustment depending on the sampling being used... start with 0ms attack and 75-120ms release.

for the compression on the kit, lower ratio, threshold to maybe 5db lower than your peaks. again, attack/release will depend on how much signal is flowing through and the speed of the tempo etc... ideally for this comp you will want to preserve some of the initial transients of each sample, so you don't want to increase the attack. For the release you'll want it to be long enough to keep the compressor for each hit, and end before the next hits.
