Psychology has no interest in the lived world, thus it has no interest in experience, thus it is a shitty perspective from which to study my mind. It's just scientism repackaged.
>>
>>64669252
Psychology isn't a science; most schools put it under the humanities umbrella. It's closer to an offshoot of certain branches of philosophy. Let me reiterate: sciences don't do behavioral studies that don't control for genetics.

You cannot get cause from effect, you absolute mongoloid. Every emotional state relates to chemical interactions in the brain. If depression was purely structural, people wouldn't suddenly suffer from it due to personal trauma.

I never said that. I'm fully aware life experiences and neuroplasticity have an influence on how the brain develops. However, implying that endogenous depression doesn't exist makes you short-sighted in your argument.

And you're saying environmental factors can't trigger schizophrenia or psychosis? You're plagued with tunnel-vision, no sense arguing with you.

My point is that the cognitive consequences of depression aren't necessarily its origin. There are exceptions, but depression isn't like being born with a cleft lip. Schizophrenia can be triggered, but its relationship to biological and genetic causes is much better established.

For those who don't know the story, in 1974 after reaching the peak of her depression she wrote letters to her family & friends announcing that she was leaving and was never heard from again. From one of the letters; "Let me go. Let me be if I can. Let me not be if I can’t. [...] Human society fascinates me & awes me & fills me with grief & joy; I just can't find my place to plug into it."

regarding the bird. from 'The Dent" Tori fan site

This was the first time Ive had the distinct displeasure of having loud, rude, obnoxious drunks near me on this tour. There were three of them in the group in the third row in section 1, They werent really fans of either Tori or Alanis; in fact the alcohol clearly led them to believe that it was THEIR show. I was concerned before the show even started that they were possibly going to be annoying because they reeked of beer (from 8 feet away) and were making loud, obnoxious comments and laughing loudly at each others stupidity and inane jokes even then started <snip> Suffice to say, this didnt solve the problem for me because they were still only about 8 feet away from me (I was now to their left) and they never stopped yapping and laughing throughout the entire first half of the set. I got more and more aggravated as time went on but didnt want to do anything which would worsen the situation. I lost it though, during Silent All These Years, when they were alternately yapping loudly, laughing, and then one of them decided to start singing along in a slightly mocking tone. I shouldnt have done it, but I got in their faces with a can you please shut the f*ck up while Tori is singing request. <snip> Shortly after that they were a little less noisy overall because they then knew that there were at least two people pissed off, but they still never completely stopped the b.s. The point of all this is that when Tori flipped the bird during The Waitress, it was directly at them. Shes done this before, but she held it an especially long time tonight. Afterwards, I turned around and asked them how it felt. They didnt have anything to say.

How the hell? It's the study and quantification of observable behavior. Cognitive and learning studies especially, the fact that learning types and intelligence theories can be proven multiple times (i.e. repeatable results, ergo, science).

P.S. since brain chemistry is not always the same for all people and you can't screen for most hormone deficiencies, experimentation with prescribed drugs is necessary.

Study up on it more, you're thinking exclusively of introspection when you talk about pseudo science, which, while more subjective than typical science, is not pseudoscience, seeing as how introspection (by the self or another) can be used to find conflicts and help to solve them through logical thinking (which is cognitive-behavioral therapy)

They can't, because natural selection gives only men the depth for extreme emotional highs and lows (whether it's joy, sadness, the thrill of combat and competition, whatever). All women have to do is basically just sit there, select their mate, and get a job so they don't feel as useless as they are (even though if they get fired they can be sure they'll never have to live on the streets). Men are the ones who have to strive and push themselves beyond impossible odds.

There's the Courtney Barnett track that gets me too, even if most of her stuff is kinda rubbish.

Not that anon but coming from someone who has brain problems the best thing you could do for her and yourself is to recognize that you can't fix her and her symptoms are out of your control. Learn to identify patterns in mood changes and do your best to be supportive throughout episodes and treatment.
>>

When she's good, make the most of it. But man, there might be days where she literally cannot do anything. She can't function. It takes a lot of goddamn strength. Depression is like the shittiest house-guest in the world that no one invited and cannot be gotten rid of. If she snaps at you or just gets angry, try to forgive and forget, it isn't really her. Don't talk about it too much unless she wants to and let her know that you want her to come to you, I say that because if you talk about it, it could start a spiral of sorts or if she's down already and you're talking about it, it won't help any. Be upbeat, do dumb shit for her, if you can get her to smile or just stop crying, you're doing pretty good already. If you play something or have a good voice, learn her favorite songs, even if all of them are by Taylor Swift, it doesn't matter, cheer her up in any way you can. I spent countless hours sitting and holding hands with her not being able to do anything too, but, that happens too. You're not failing her. It isn't your fault. I swear to you, man. You just have to wait sometimes. If she's not seeing a therapist and isn't trying any meds, take her to see one and talk to an actual medical doctor as well, there are plenty of options for some help. It'll get really bad on her period because of the emotional turbulence, birth control can help with that, but, ask a doctor and try to be with her every step of the way.

I managed to get depressed in the process and stayed for three months too long with no change because I didn't listen. She might lean on someone else for some support, but, just make sure you're there when she needs you or she's gotten up so you can dust her off.
And really, good luck. I hope it works and I hope any advice I gave helps even a little.

Thanks you guys you made me cry.
I don't think it'll be as bad as your experiences but thank you so much.
She has great taste in music and I'm learning guitar. I'm pretty wacky and upbeat I hope that helps.

It should. It can be kinda painful but, and I guess I'm a sap, if you fall in love, it's completely worth it.

IT IS THE BEST! WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL ME ABOUT THIS?
>>64673058
So how did it end?
>>
>>64672338
I've been with two girls with depression (only one diagnosed but they acted the same)

Honestly... don't. It might seem worth it now but ending it will be tough when you realise you need to and you're her main support

>>64673058

>>
>>64673220

It depends. You may not be her main support. Or, you could end up getting dragged along like I did. It just depends.

187 here

I'd still be a friend to someone with depression (still speak to them both) - but I wouldn't get that close again. It's really harsh to say, feels bad, but it's true. Really took it out of me over the years I was in those relationships, and like the others said there really isn't anything you can do to help, unfortunately.

If I was with someone for a long time and they developed depression I'd stick around... but if you already know then just know what you're getting into

I think it's too late to abandon any romantic/sexual aspect, and I don't want to. I appreciate it though and I'll proceed with caution. (We're barely allowed to post on 4chan and we aren't that serious and her depression isn't that severe I don't want to make my life out to be that dramatic)

I brought some concerns about the future, differences I saw, what she wanted. I was only looking for a discussion, but, I think my being depressed and emotional distance from the both of us because of lack of support (she had her mom especially, which in itself, caused esteem problems in me, she would lean on her mom and I felt like I couldn't do what a boyfriend was supposed to) and her entire family and a therapist and a doctor, I literally had just her for my depression because it wasn't bad enough to reach out for a while and I didn't really know who to go to, which doesn't quite work out well. It ended partway through a break, so, I had four or five days to recuperate without having to see her. I got my t-shirts and a jacket back, I tried giving her a gift I'd already gotten because I damn sure didn't want it. Leather necklace as a replacement for something I made, I had it wrapped around my wrist so I could give it to her when I saw her, but, she didn't want it and it's just stayed there. It's been a little under 5 months and I think I'm over it well enough.

Sibylle Baier, apparently she's still kicking
>>
>>64673572
Wait why do you say that? What makes you say it's exacerbated (that means intensified and in this case worsened right?)? She is currently receiving help and likely will be getting meds later (she's worried that meds might make her act and feel differently, as in not her real self, is this a legitimate fear?)
>>64673523

A little. They can make you kinda off, but, again, you sold be able to get the right combination to at least minimize this risk.

I meant exacerbated because I may have dug something up in her or, more likely, she dug something up in me and it made us worse. Though, when I think back, I already had some symptoms previously, I wouldn't count on spontaneous depression.
