Did the Spooky Kids win?

Back in the early 90s, Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids were all about parodying children's entertainment and the concept of "role models". Apparently their goal was to challenge the misconceptions people have about childhood by showcasing all of its fucked-up aspects, so that parents would stop treating their kids like idiots. To that end, they made use of a shitload of imagery commonly associated with childhood, such as Dr Seuss characters, after-school specials, clowns, christmas cakes, all that stuff kids are supposed to love and that's the equivalent of drugs and political/religious figures for grown-ups. It's of course an exaggeration but it had some relevancy.

Now, if the Spooky Kids were debuting RIGHT NOW instead of in the early 90s, would they even have anything left to parody and desecrate? I mean, what do contemporary kids have in the way of dumb entertainment and role models? Angry Birds? Pewdiepie? Even teenagers and young adults are into this shit.

Hence my question: did the Spooky Kids succeed in destroying "children's culture" and its noxious effects, or has it simply been diluted into the mainstream?

The nihilism and irreverence of the 90s was new and groundbreaking at the time (the era of edgy bands, the Simpsons, South Park, Jerry Springer, WWF attitude era etc) but its effect is that nothing shocks us anymore, maybe because there's nothing we find sacred. Former symbols of non-conformity like tattoos and piercings can no longer fill that function. Something like 40% of the adult population has tattoos, and by the next generation it will be above 50. I think you're on to something OP, but you may be missing the forest for the trees. It's a smaller part of a greater cultural development.
