you're not wrong in that encouraging opposition to norms like that causes the type of uneducated purposefully-contrarian behavior you've mentioned, but I don't think the show does that in the slightest. it just happens to have characters with such traits and doesn't really push the issue to the forefront.
also, why would you say that gender roles are necessary? it's always seemed to me that things would be better without them since it would preempt the entire issue and get rid of yet another arbitrary distinction between people to get mad over.

gender roles are natural, and therfor neccesarry, how a person is percieved. Men and women are percieved a certain way due to the role they play in society. Chance the percepton, dilute the role, assuming the role is crucial enough (women as primary caregivers to their young for example) and it all goes a bit wrong.
Also if that's all a bit too much it helps to make sense of the world for children. more "black and white" as it were.
